The Great War

5 жыл бұрын

In our last epilogue special we outline the wars and conflicts that followed World War 1, some of them immediately and some of them with only a brief period of peace. Even in 1919 it was already clear that "the war to end all wars" didn't in fact do that and that the new world order would be shaped by violence.

hey guys and girls, with this last video, our epilogue series is over and this was the very last episode featuring Indy. Again, this was more meant as an appetizer for the future of the show now. When we filmed this, we didn't know, yet that we could continue working on the show. We will make an announcement about what to expect next year this week. Cheers Flo

youtube ignores reality to make a better experience for . . . advertisers, pure and simple. It's not about us, it's about major, Fortune 500, corporations. If we disappear they won't bat an eye . . . until they realize that we pay for every single thing their rich owners own. Let them pay their own way and leave us creative talents alone!.

KZfaq is concerned with advertisers. If Google could they would make every video we watch be an ad followed by another ad. Wars, conflicts and history (unless it is corporate history) is not ad friendly.

KZfaq is concerned with Ads. Hence, several of the big uproars these last couple years affecting many content providers (which the Great War Channel was mostly spared). KZfaq still pays attention only to the most popular channels, not the most factual or historically relevant. Honestly it is a service that would die with any decent competition... but single-payer healthcare in the USA is more likely than that happening, and those living here know I just got blacklisted from a hundred organizations for even SUGGESTING such a commie-inspired policy.

The period after WW1 is so fascinating with so many conflicts that has such minor attention. Niall Ferguson's “War of the World" describes how WW1 + 2 + colonial wars can be described as one war: the war of the world as he put it. Personally I was fascinated by the Ukrainian War of Independence with so many factions (West Ukr. nationalists; Ukrainian nationalists; reds; whites; blacks; Poles). I guess that most of these conflicts have been overshadowed by greater horrors to come: Stalin's terror and WW 2. That might explain these conflicts entered oblivion. Great episode; thanks for all the work and best of luck to Indy!

@@twandepan I find it unlikely that the great powers would be stupid enough to start a new global conflict after the massive tragedies of the Great War. They might be willing to pick fights with these new, tiny nations created by the new post-war order, but a war on the scale that we saw in the Great War could never happen again. And even if some lunatics did start another war between great powers, we have learned enough about modern warfare to keep them in check. The nature of modern weaponry means that any advances will necessarily be slow and advantageous to the defender, meaning that we can easily constrain any aggressor to a static front while they drain their resources on fruitless attacks and eventually collapse to internal division as their own population, well-educated on modern morality and appreciative of the sanctity of human life and the interconnectedness of the human race, refuses to follow a government that refuses to learn its lesson that aggression and warfare make losers of us all. There could never be a "World War Two". Trust me.

Congratulations Indy, you’ve done an amazing job! This series was so entertaining yet immersive in detail, an incredible accomplishment. I believe you’ve set a new mold for presenting history in this new and exciting way. Bravo! As for this summary of the immediate after-affects of the Great War it’s very depressing how you tie together all the conflicts that sprung from it. You are also bang on as to how the dehumanizing effect of 4 plus years of mass mechanized slaughter marked the survivors of that generation. The even greater mayhem that would follow over the next quarter century was in no small way enabled by that generation of war scarred citizenry. So sad, we are still paying the price for 1914-18 to this day.

I just found this channel during the corona pandemic (mid 2021 I think), so I was way to late for the week-by-week gimmick. And today Im finally finishied the great war. It was a great show and this is probably the best channel here I have ever seen. All of you made an awesom job. Im looking forward to see the sequel (maybe I can catch up before that war ends too) and of course the other videos here.

Thank you Indy, thank you Flo and thanks to the entire Great War team. It has been inspiring and wonderful, even persuading me to go down a career in history. Today is gonna be a great day, this video was amazing (as usual) but as an early Christmas present, I get to go watch "They Shall Not Grow Old" a WW1 documentary by Peter Jackson, today is wonderful, and to you lads reading this have a wonderful day.

Awesome video! Just it's quite incorrect to say that Lithuania was split into factions while fighting the bolsheviks, the only thing that might refer to that is the puppet government that the soviets installed in Vilnius, and even that only lasted for a few months, of course there were attempts at a coup but that went nowhere. Lithuanians were quite determined to beat the russians back, no matter white or red, we just wanted our independence. Other than this small detail it's an amazing vid. And thanks Indy for your service, I'll see you in youtube Valhala.

Yeah, same for Latvia. The whole Baltic part was odd especially as the timeline wasn't relay clear and it sort of sounded like it ended with the Baltic's being controlled by the reds. Witch is weird as lasted less than a year and Latvian army in particular had more troubles with the Germans than the Russians.

Was about to point that out as well, they dint even mention the lithuanian independence declaration on the weekly video. Quite a shame as the baltic independence wars were rather intresting.

Great analyst Indy as per usual.Your last comment reminds me of a conversation i had with a museum curator friend of mine in Crete.. which we came to the conclusion, that it was one big `world war` starting from the two Balkan war s(1912 and 13) straight through to the collapse of the soviet union (1991, an 80 conflict, involving most of the same `players`, just some changing sides when it was in national interest and expediency, with a few treaties thrown in,and a pause by all sides to rearm, replenish ( kinda alike half time, and rest before going in extra time in a football match).

Indy, you have some wrong information on Moldova. Moldova is the east part of the medieval principality of Moldova (today in three countries, 40% in Romania, 40% Republic of Moldova 20% in Ukraine aprox.).In 1812 at the end of Napoleonic wars Tsarist Russia took east part of Moldova (actual Republic of Moldova + north and south parts wich actually are in Ukraine) in an agreement with Ottoman Empire which the latter regretted soon after.I think this was agreed by Napoleon himself, the two European emperors dominating together the continent amnd making thus the ottomans powerless. The Russians called the new province Bessarabia after some old Romanian (Wallachian) dinasty who apparently owned the south of it centuries earlier. In 1859, Wallachia and the remaining Moldova united in a Romanian state under Alexandru Ioan-Cuza, following thus other national unifications like those of italian states which gave Italy or Prussia and Bavaria which gave Germany. In March 1918, following the dissolution of Tsarist Russia, The Council of the Country (Sfatul Ţării) decided by vote (86 for, 3 against and 36 abstaining) the unification with Romania. To keep in mind that the 3 votes against are from national minorities at the time.Ukraine claimed indeed Moldova but the people of Moldova were shocked by this claim

Since you mentioned the Balfour declaration here, I should probably point out, that it did not actually talk about a jewish state, but a "National Home", which is an intentionally vague term used, because the politicians, who made the Balfour declaration did not want to make any real promises. But whatever the intention, it layed the groundwork for a long and very messy conflict, though, it certainly was not the only thing, sparking tensions in the region, by far not!

These epilogues have been very interesting, often the immediate postwar period is ignored in history courses. Or they focus on the rise of the totalitarians in Italy and Germany and nothing else.
