You know that Brian and his Dad built the Red Special guitar from scratch, right? Wood from a table and fireplace mantle, hand wired pick-ups, though Brian replaced them not too long after as he didn't love their sound.

Rory Gallagher. Caring man he shared his sound with Brian May unselfishly . Rory was not only a fantastic talent but he had a profoundly beautiful heart and soul.. what a beautiful human being and he is the only man that I love or will ever love for all of eternity. It's crazy how Rory got so much sustain from a strat for sure tubes and Alex Lifeson another guy who played a strat sometimes but I think he had humbucker s in the back a full sound like Brian May

He did an interview with Rick Wakeman in which he talked about this and lots of early Queen stuff. It's on KZfaq I think.

Yes, I also read an interview with him talking about the Rangemaster and the Vox AC 30 amp, which he started using after hearing and seeing Rory Gallagher using it. I also believe that Rory is responsible for the popularity of the Fender Bassman amplifier...another of his favorites in the early 70's. There's a picture of him playing live in 1972 or 73, where everything appears. Vox and beside him Bassman with the Rangemaster on top of him, his old Stratocaster on the shelf and him playing on his white Tele...a beautiful picture

There is quite a bit of discussion around over the transistor in the clean boost part of the treble booster circuits when to me the key to the tone is how it's shaped by the capacitor (and how the first gain stage in the AC30 clips when it's overloaded). These days the treble boost is before the wireless anyway. Thanks for clarifying those capacitor values where possible.

@@TheGuitarShow For people in the UK, there is an exhibition currently at Reading Museum - featuring exhibits from the first ever Reading Festival. Star exhibit is Rory Gallagher’s AC30, plus his Dallas Rangemaster, his Telecaster, bottleneck, strap, guitar cable etc etc. By all accounts Rory stole the show at that first festival, and to be able to look at his gear at very close quarters (albeit behind glass) is a wonderful opportunity. You can ever look into the back of his amp and almost smell the tubes! Guitar nerd here!

I think it was Brian who got sick. The tour in 74 was canceled after May 11th because Brian got Hepatitis and had to go home and into hospital for a good length of time. Just got over that and discovered he had a nasty ulcer that had to be fixed too. 1974 was a rough year for our Brian.

@The SNES Man there is so much wrong with what you've said. However let's take Brian out of the equation. What you've said is the equivalent of "no one on earth should dislike pears." It's just silly. Brian May is boring. The most interesting thing about him his he built his guitar, but even then, so what?

That was tape flanging! The edge of the tape is called the flange. You run two identical tapes, side by side, and touch the flange on each tape, very gently, to get that sound. It's especially obvious on the drum tone from Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'. There are other Queen songs with tape flanging, such as 'Some Day, One Day', etc. They used on vocals too... The pedal was invented to mimic the actual tape flanging sounds.

That's the next video...Ive bought a book all about it so hopefully it should be interesting.

Gibson Les Paul- used as a backup. Fender Stratocaster- used as a backup and in a Swedish mimed performance of killer queen. Hairfred acoustic guitar- used in songs such as white queen and jealousy. A Spanish classical guitar with which he is pictured circa 1966-1967. John birch Red Special copy- used as a backup and in we will rock you/spread your wings videos. Greco Red Special copy- used in the good old fashioned lover boy TOTP performance. Gibson Flying V- used as a backup Washburn RR-V- used in the princes of the universe video. Chet Atkins nylon string guitar- used live in is this the world we created. Red special double neck guitar- used live for under pressure. Fender telecaster- used for crazy little thing called love. Satellite Stratocaster- used as a prop for the play the game video Red special with F hole- used for crazy little thing called love. Guild 12 string- used for modern love of my life Ovation 12 string- used for the classic love of my life. Burns electric 12 string.- used for long away. Skull guitar- used for the it’s a hard life video, not sure if it was functional tho. Martin D18- used for ‘39 in Hyde park. -bonus-- There’s a guitar called Spade which Brian may designed as a possible follow up to his red special built many years later in 2004 by a guy named Andrew Guyton, no idea if Brian ever used it tho. Also there’s his ukelele/banjo given to him by his father and used in live performances of bring back that Leroy brown. It would definitely be a cool idea to see a video of all his guitars along with others i may have missed.

@@powertothebauer296 true he did use a Guild as a backup but not for those songs as the Guild didn’t go into production until 1984 and then again in 1993 but yeah you’re correct, the Guild was his backup from the mid 80s and onwards.

@@powertothebauer296 bro the Guild copy didn’t exist in the 70s. Brian did not partner with Guild until 1983 to release them beginning in 1984. He says so himself and its archived information you can look up. That Guitar in Houston wasn’t a Guild, he only had i believe the Yellow Birch model used in the We Will Rock You and Spread Your Wings videos and he also had a Japanese Greco copy used in the Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy top of the pops performance. No guilds in the 70s.

@@powertothebauer296 just looked at the video and what you see is his original red special, not a copy. A couple of things to note, first there is no logo on the headstock. Second, the fretboard is lacquered, which the Guild copy wasn’t. Third- the tremolo system is the authentic Brian May designed system not the Kahler tremolo system that Guild employed for their copies. It is not the Guild model.

@@aspen3718 Duracells are alkaline , but the older and cheaper RAYOVAC / panasonic / eveready Zinc Carbon type batteries are claimed to sound better in some pedal ciruits . either way they (carbons) are prefectly acceptable for low current drain applications ie analog circuits but when you get into pedal circuits that use a/d and d/a or digital stuff its a whole different ballgame with higher current drains and one should consider using a power suply or larger battery bank such as a li ion pack on a vreg or buck . alkalkine vs carbon also have diffferent operating temp ranges . the carbons are not as flexible as the alkalines run at more extreme temp ranges . so i guess using a duracell is more expensive , and it is not optimal for the sound quality . so consider this if loading up your pedals , and if you find your self not being sure , look for the pedals current consumption rate , so that is not volts but typically measured in milliamps or mah . the lower drain stuff like wah, fuzz and booster = carbon zincs , digital delay or fancy digital stuff power supply or alkaline , the thing is a lot of the newer digital stuff has very high consumption -such as over 100 mah or 1/10th of an amp up to 250 mah or 1/4th an amp - so in these types of higher current draw circuits even using a "beefyer" alkaline would only last a short time = so choose a power supply or perhaps if you are a wierdo -a battery pack or bank. Battery bank is not as common but some do use it . including myself . you can play in remote areas and its nice n quiet or you never have to worry about RFI ( you dont have hum and noise interferance as much) i have been using battery rig since pre 2010 . and yeah perhaps that was a lot ( for you to read but i assure you , your porn hasnt gone anywhere ... ) there is no emoji to really explain this and if this is too complicated there is always legos for your hobby.

I'd never heard anyone delineate the technical reasons for the differences before now, so thanks.

Danelectro sells a carbon zinc battery for pedals. A few years ago a guitarist did a video on the subject of carbon zinc vs alkaline vs external power supply. It might have been Rhett Shull. In a studio, when you are recording, I can see getting nerdy about batteries but live? How many concert venues are perfect sound environments?
