Thank you for acknowledging that it’s not an issue of laziness or incompetence. Some people value their free time differently. A lot of tasks for some people are on the “I just don’t want to do this…” list. If someone else can earn a living accommodating those folks, it’s win-win.

I agree, some people reach a point in life where it's just make sense to pay someone and not be bothered with it, regardless how small and easy. When I was younger I built our 800 linear foot fence with three gates, recently I called someone to rehang two of the gates...haha.

You do what most “handymen” don’t do. You test your installation to make sure it works as it should. I am a building operations supervisor for a fortune 100 company. I teach my technicians to take before, during, after pictures, and a short video of the item working. I have them upload it all to a work order as backup to the work. But most importantly they are to test the item for proper functionality.

There’s definitely something to be said about being the person who shows up for the estimate and the work. My customers all have commented on how nice it is to deal with one person. Not having to deal with a sales person, then someone to come out and measure and order parts and then another person to install goes a long way with people being willing to pay more. And I always welcome customers calling electricians or plumbers for these types of fixes. When you get a $250.00 bill just for them to walk through the door, $350.00 for a ceiling fan is cheap! Keep up the great work!!

If you have the skills, by all means save yourself the money and do it yourself.

@@nekmiftari9635 what happens when you install the fan, flip the switch and nothing happens? Is the average homeowner going to know how to trouble shoot the issue? Hey! I have been the Apt management for almost 20 years and there is that common problem I have seen where the screws that hold in a door latch or deadbolt have lost their grip, and the typical solution is glue, sticks, putty, or that ugly metal sleeve that sits over the door. There is this new hardware piece that sits INSIDE the door alongside the latch. Its threaded to receive the machine screws, tightening down the latch. Its called ReSecure Latch. They have a couple videos on here showing how it works. Maybe something that could help you in your next home repair.

I did most all home repairs consisting of carpentry, electric, plumbing and AC. I never advertised and only worked from referrals but never charged what you are getting for these jobs. I would get 100 for a ceiling fan or toilet but mostly $60 for the first hour ( labor ) doing assorted "honey do list stuff" I'm amazed you could charge, and get paid that much for some of the jobs you do. I know I was selling myself short but it felt good helping some of these people out like seniors etc. Most people just don't have that kind of money ? As much as I want to live in bum fuck nowhere, I did have to move to a larger town of about 20,000. The vast majority of my clients are wealthy, elderly women, or at least middle aged. Being a handyman in a rural or blue-collar area is a death sentence. Some advice for those starting our or trying to make it: Either move to suburbia or find somewhere surrounded by rich folks who hate getting their hands dirty. Look up the demographics of your state, or if you're OK with relocating, check out other states. All it takes is for you to do one good job for a wealthy, elderly client and she tells all her friends and boom you're golden.

Really thinking about being a handyman..I can do everything you've done and more. People are so lazy and don't want to mess with things. I've done everything myself, from rebuilding boiler units, total car repair, ripping out floors and building new joists and subfloors, electrical work, etc. I make too much money at my city job ...considering part time though.

Sometimes spending the extra money to get things done is just a piece of mind. And you don’t have to worry about messing it up and going to the store multiple times. I hired a mechanic to fix my dads truck. Could I have done it? Sure. It would have taken me 3x the time which it only took him 2. My time is valuable so paying someone else is easy. And I didn’t have to buy another special tool. I do handyman work on the side and charge $65. Thinking about raising it again. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I charge about $50 less on the jobs you did in this video, that way my customers feel like they are getting a deal and not having to pay a plumber $150 to $170 to change out parts on a toilet for example. Never had to do a brace for a fan, but depending on how high the ceiling is $100 to $200. Thanks for sharing some figures and times, it make me feel like I'm not spinning my wheels trying to build up my handyman business.

@Divine Masculine how is that a rip off? Some people have a minimum charge to come out I have a minimum charge of $80 if someone calls me just to change a lightbulb on a light that's too high and they don't have a ladder to reach it's going to cost $80 that's my minimum charge to come out and do any type of work $100 to hang curtains is reasonable. Just curious do you expect somebody to only charge you $20 or $30 since it's an hour of work?

@@Jlevy33091 its down right greed. your exploiting ppls intelligence for alot of money. i can go and borrow a step ladder and buy a light bulb for less than $10. why in the hell would a curtain be worth $100 to hang when its not even worth that price itself. just because you can doesnt mean its okay to do so. honest pay for honest work. i get we have to make a living but ripping ppl off is wrong. if your charging a minimum to do the work because of travel etc, then you dont need to do that job. you should be doing jobs that make the travel worth it by the work involved. i would be honest with my customers and say, because of x and y i think it would be more beneficial to you to find a contractor closer etc etc and they would respect that out of a contractor. i renovate houses, i do so with quality products that dont break the bank but gives the house a premium atmosphere to it, i charge under market alot of the time because i believe its more fair. i can sleep at night that i dont screw ppl over to be successful. you should be charging based on difficulty of task. it only takes a half hour to hang curtains and your charging way more than an hours work. you better be vacuuming up, leaving no trace you were in the home at all at those prices.

@Corban Caldwell well, you can do whatever let's you sleep at night, but get off your high horse trying to say anyone is getting ripped off in this situation. You said it yourself, you under charge. That's what makes you feel good and makes you a living, but it's not "fair." Fair prices are those that both parties willingly agree to, period. You deciding for other people what they can afford or not is not your job, it's just your ego. Just because you would never pay x y or z for a task doesn't make it unfair.

This is the difference between the metropolitan handyman and the rural America handyman. In rural America, your clientele are the people that do it themselves, they just want a good deal, or they know the time and effort of a job. They very rarely pay for freeing of their time. In larger cities, or expansive suburbs, people want their weekends. Anyone who works full-time and has a family can barely schedule to get their car in for maintenance let alone find time or energy to hang a curtain. If you are looking to get into this business or any business, you can do it anywhere, but know your market and know that you can do yourself a disservice working in the wrong market.

also in the city I meet a lot of people who don't know much about this work. So they start to hang the curtain, oops the wall is concrete and my drill doesn't work, etc etc. so they just end up hiring because they lack handy knowledge and don't have proper tools.

I like it, but for the money, I would throw a balancing kit at it too and a few minutes making sure that fan rotates dead level. Pretty simple... Mesure distance from the ceiling to blade tip and rotate through all the blades trying to find the high one, then weigh it down with the movable balance weight before doing final glue down on the back of the blade it reduces running noise and extends bearing life..

Did most of my own work including major renovation, pouring concrete floors and footers, tearing out old foundation building forms, pouring new footers and setting one side of house back down on new foundation. Lots of spackling and painting over the years, plumbing, installed one ceiling fan. Vinyl flooring, install toilets, light fixtures, lots of copper plumbing. Installing new joists and columns. My big problem: I AM SLOW--and a perfectionist. Nowhere near as fast as you. Could I still be a handyman?

Who other than someone elderly or handicapped would hire someone to hang curtain rods? Maybe it's just that I live in the boonies and therefore have learned from a young age that you learn to do stuff yourself (I've done electrical, plumbing, flooring etc); if I lived in the suburbs or urban areas I'd get rich just on my know how. City folks are a lot different, but I'm glad they're financially stable enough to hire someone and that someone makes a living doing this stuff.

As a homeowner, it boggles my mind that there are so many other homeowners who don't know how to perform basic maintenance on their home or make minor upgrades/repairs. This doesn't imply every home owner should do these tasks themselves, but they should at least understand the basics of how their likely largest investment operates. Luckily for your clients, you are honest and charge a fair price for your time and skills. I've seen friends, neighbors, and family swindled out of their money by dishonest handymen because of their ignorance. It makes me angry for two reasons: I don't like seeing people scammed, and that behavior gives a bad name to a profession where the majority of its practitioners are, in fact, honest and fair. This video not only serves as a good motivator for those who wish to do this as a profession, but it also provides good transparency on what prices should be and what amount of work goes into these more common handyman jobs. I hope it influences more people to pursue this career and helps others appreciate how a good handyman conducts business.
