I have the Onkyo TX-8270 and love it, it would have to be the most feature packed stereo receiver ever and I am always impressed that when you select it from Roon it turns itself on. Sounds incredible when you use Roon and umsample in DSD to it.

Bought it just this week. Works good. Wanted the ns-6130 but they told me it's off the production. So now I have less reasons to regret 😀 - since I got the more expensive ns-6170. I only use it with hard drive for now.

Thanks for reviewing this. I expect that many other Audiophile reviewers would feel that reviewing a piece of "consumer" kit was beneath them. As all recent Onkyo equipment supports Google Chromecast, I think you would find that this works well as a Roon endpoint. I am curious if you can confirm that this device can successfully play back MQA via Roon.

Thank you Mr. Beekhuyzen for your recent review; I know that it's pretty hard to judge but overall, in your opinion when it comes to play Hi-res files from mass storage (e.g FLAC 24-bit/192kHz), which device you'll recommend taking in consideration that you've tested both on the same amp, speakers, etc, system : Onkyo NS-6170 or Yamaha WXC-50? I know that WXC-50 doesn't support MQA yet (and maybe never will but still) and there are more hardware differences like the DAC part of these two, and so on. BR

I can only compare the 6170 to my previous player the Pioneer N-P01. The sound is in a different league to the Pioneer. The display is the only disappointing part of the 6170, but if you can live with that then the Onkyo is a great buy.

I managed to set it up as an Airplay on a Iphone SE, so on the iphone Tidal app. i choose between iphones output or Airplay Onkyo output, however, i also have an Windows10 laptop and i would like to know if it is possible and if you please be so kind to explain to me: In order to play/stream from laptops Tidal app. through the Onkyo, i suppose in Tidal app. in Sound Output panel, the Onkyo must appear there for me to be able to select it as sound output, i do not know how to make the Onkyo appear in Tidal's s "sound output panel' , or is there a different way to play from laptop's Tidal through the Onkyo? I would highly appreciate your help. 2. You said the bitrate does not appear on Onkyo's front panel but you can see it on the app, playing Tidal from iphone SE through Onkyo i can only see if it's a hifi, master track but not the bit rate. Can you please tell me in which app. on which device may i see the bitrate? Thank you, and i would like to transmit much appreciation for your work.

I am interested in the hi res of MQA and Tidal. If my understanding is correct to receive these high bit rate and sampling files you need to be hard wired connected to the internet and not just use Wifi. If that is correct it leaves many behind as the internet box is often not where you want your 2 channel stereo unit. Can anyone suggest a good method of bringing the internet to the basement of an older house (50 years old)? Great channel!

Do i need to connect a PC to get the MQA quality, or can I use the phone as a remote (through the Onkyo App) and still get the MQA quality? I have an Android device, so there's no AirPlay 2.

I've got the NS-6130 (compared to the 6170 there's no DAB or FM radio and it uses the AK4452 chip) and I bought mine heavily discounted last year - I'm really pleased with it.

It is shame Hans that you did not talk about its perf as a simple renderer connected to your Mitek dac. To my own, I think that AKM dit a mistake with their AK4490. The formers AK4395-96 and overall AK4399, where very much better. AKM issued quickly theier AK4493-95 and finaly the AK4497 which finaly can be compared with the formers and with all the commun gadgets nowadays, filters, volume control, etc.
