As a side note, the title in japanese does not call her evil, it translates to something more like "War Chronicles of a Little Girl" or something. Also, I'm definitely on team subtitles for this one, Tanya's voice actress is phenomenal, she's the same person that voiced Clementine in Overlord. Pineapple.

Pineapple. All things considered the dub is okay, BUT I'll still recommend the sub simply bc Tanyas VA is just (!!!)THAT AMAZING(!!!) in the original! (It also lets your viewers that - unlike myself - don't know every word spoken by heart more easily follow the conversations. x,D) It's an amazing show, definitely one of my favourites! I wrote my finals about this series and the ambivalence of "evil" in Anime/Manga. I must have watched every episode at least 20 times by now and I STILL can't get tired of it. ^w^ Regarding some of your other questions: 1.) Most things regarding the world/story will be answered within the show, so I won't say anything. 2.) Youjo Senki has 1 season, 1 OVA/special and 1 movie (which should be watched in that order) a second season has been announced, but no release-date has been announced as of yet. (my personal speculation would put the release of second season somewhere within the next 2 years)

So I'm a bit late to the party, but I'll explain why she KNEW that that pillbox would get bombed. This author is pretty well versed in military and there's every clue as to why they're probably going to die given to us in advance during the episode. It's a ww1 style warfare with trenches and pillboxes here and there protecting the various lines; with soldiers advancing or retreating on new lines if necessary, backed up by artillery. And we see earlier in this episode that the current position for the German army is not possible to maintain, so they've ordered to pull back the line. In other words, the frontline is MOVING BACK. But a pillbox in the rear, that is of no matter for the enemy artillery, will not move. And will be used to cover the retreat of the soldiers against the pursuing attackers. So suddenly, that pillbox that didn't matter for the enemy is now on the frontline, covering the retreat, and therefore a hindrance and will receive the usual counter : it will be targetted by enemy artillery to blow it up and allow their own infantry to take the German trenches that the Germans have abandoned to retreat to new trenches further back. Furthermore, we've seen earlier that mages have shields allowing them to block to some degree incoming artillery shell, and they obviously also could dodge. But what if a mage is trapped inside a pillbox ? He can't flee, and won't be able to do a thing about the pillbox crumbling on them and the big amount of shells coming for them. If she directly killed those two, or if she punished them with a suicide mission, this would have remained on her record. But she READ THE BATTLEFIELD, understood that the frontline would move back and that pillboxes in the back would become targets as they would be protecting the retreat. She purposely sent them in a place that at that time, seemed safe for everyone looking at her order, knowing very well that it was one of the worst place for a mage to survive the incoming retreat.

a dubbed show requires a different volume than a subtitled one. food for thought.

I would recommend you watch the series with subtitles 😅 since the dubbing in the English language is well known worldwide for changing many dialogues or censoring things (apart from censoring dialogues they also censor scenes) not to mention that many times the dubbing is mostly In the animes they fail to convey the same emotion as in the original Japanese audio to the point that sometimes the voices in English come to be heard a little flat. It's not for nothing that on KZfaq there are too many channels that make comparisons of dubbing or where they show the errors. , changes and censorship that foreign anime or series had in the English language dubbing (and yes, there are many) 👍 but it's just some advice that I give you, you decide.

Concerning the magic in this world: Since the show does a pretty bad job at explaining it, the magic is used by constructing formulas to change properties of the physical world. More or less like we use a flame to heat something up, but instead of a flame here its magic. And since you can change basically any property you like with enough magic power, you can do almost anything. The only limit is the magic power at your disposal and the amount of magic required by the formula. Tanya is using it for all lot of things simultaneously: Flight, power of the bullets, heating herself up at 10k Meters as well putting up a defensive shield and creating the decoy for example. Oh and pineapple, Team Sub here, although late :D

Tanya is not the type to stain her hands if she can do things other way. She didn't kill the insubordinates herself, she just sent them to a position where it was quite probable that they would be killed by the enemy. I would have done the same because those guys who are thirsty for achievements and say "Give me glory or give me death" are the kind of people who get their comrades involved and killed. Also, Pineapple.

The dub seemed good, but the VA for Tanya in Japanese is one of the best. You may recognize her as the voice of Clementine from Overlord. You should watch subbed if you can. And, of course, pineapple.

A big note in favor of subs: subtitles usually have the original text correctly translated (some exceptions, but its a good rule of thumb), however, with dubs, they Very often change key sections of lines just to make it fit animations or to try and make it more “american friendly”

pineapple. i just love that last combat scene where she pretty much nukes the enemy company. but if you think she's crazy over this you aren't ready for what's next. Don't know if you'll watch the films after the anime but if you don't there's the most disrespectful thing in the universe happening in the film. The scene is a must watch.

Tanya the Evil is a great anime and Tanya is one of my favorite characters in anime. Have fun watching. 😉 Many open questions are answered in episodes 2 and 3.

When watching this keep in mind that the anime changed a lot how events happened and drastically changed some of the character designs for unknown reasons.

so the war is basically WW1 in this world but some of the aspects of the technology is straight up WW2 level, and the computation jewels the mages use have functions that are like modern day equipment.

The subbed and dubbed version of this series is both great. Also, there's a German version of the ED that is by far the superior version of the ED, lol

The rifles and bullets are normal the mages imbue spells to be carried by the bullets and add spells to the bayonets to strengthen them for combat. 22:01 Who needs nukes when you have Tanya? First time seeing Tanya's smirk at the end cinched this show for me. Pineapple!

Lol, pineapple lol, but most of your questions will be answered in the next 2 episodes. This episode takes place after those 2 episodes. The next 2 are her origin story. Then episode 4 picks up after this episode. The reason her and the other girl's eyes are so much more anime is because they are the main characters and so are made more expressive. Tanya is a sociopath, not specifically EVIL. But she's extremely lawful evil/neutral in DnD terms. She believes that following the rules of her official superiors is LAW and must be followed perfectly. She does this specifically to rise in the ranks and reach the top position herself as much as possible. She really only cares about herself and her own safety. She cares about her subordinates only as much as it benefits herself. If their safety benefits her, then she will protect them. If they are loyal to her and this benefits herself, then she will protect them. She's 9 years old at this point and the most powerful magic caster in this world at this moment. The scientists in this world were able to harness magic and more easily control it through technology. But only a very small number of people have even the potential to use magic. And this series combines WW1 and WW2 into a single massive war. There's no Nazi's, the actual reason for this war is basically the same as the political landscape as WW1, just 10 years later than it was in our world. But this WW1 has just started using technology that was just becoming available in WW2. So it's a combination of both of our world wars.

Pay attention to the Years and compare to our history. Imagine if archduke ferdinand never got assassinated and everyone just stayed generally hostile without actually breaking into WW1 until the mid 1920s. MURPHY'S LAWS OF COMBAT: 1. Never volunteer. 2. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you. 3. Friendly fire isn't. 4 Tracers work both ways 5. If you are short of everything except enemies you are in combat. If you want to assign Tanya, a Dungeons & Dragons alignment. The most suitable one is lawful neutral. She is not actually evil. She is simply very pragmatic..... And extremely rulebound. 🤔

Pineapple The reason for Tanya's specialness will be revealed in the future. I shouldn't say it here. There are up to 12 episodes, one special episode, and one movie version. A second season has also been decided, but it has not yet been decided. Tanya's Japanese voice is very good (Clemantine from Overlord), and there are certain episodes where it is particularly effective. Whether you watch that one or both depends on how particular you are about the voices of the voice actors.

The dub is great. The only reason i suggest sub is that the movie and ova are not dubbed. So, for consistency, I would go sub.

idk how you guys ended up watching the Eng dub version of this anime (might be caused by some weird language settings within the streaming platform or prolly getting suggested by those of who votes for this show, idk), but yeah it just doesn't feels right to me, though it's still fine to my ear in some part of the scenes but i can't lie watching it as a whole and also comparing it side by side with the original Japanese VA, the Eng dub version doesn't do the justice, the emotion from the plot doesn't feels the same, the back and forth conversation between character almost doesn't flow natural while the vibe is also somewhat seemingly off in several dialogues which ofc, that just me personally tho and i don't speak for everyone else obviously, therefore if you guys wanna go all the way through the whole season with these Eng dub version, then what can i say, cuz personal preference is supposed to be subjective and i'd prefer you guys being as comfy as it could be rather than being burdened by viewer's personal demand but again, it's gonna be a whole different case if you guys asking us as your viewers about what's the best way to enjoy this show, then i can honest to say that atleast more than 70% of global fans of this show would definitely go for the Japanese VA all the way around without a single doubt
