Ransom is a British company manufacturing agricultural and horticulture machinery from Suffolk UK extremely well made equipment and great quality.

It never fails to amaze me that people will pay thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars for a piece of machinery and then just leave it outside to rust into oblivion. Is spending $8 on a tarp to expensive?

Dude. I love your work and i want you to to still be able to do. As an electrician i give you an advise that saves you a lot of blood loss. Never cut a cable insulation the way you did. Blade to body and holding your hand under it. I seen terrible things like a young guy doing this and completely cut his entire palm open. On round objects you Slip away very very easy . Cut from body away and never a hand in or under the direction of the cut. Please stay safe and healthy.

When you redid the hydraulic cylinder, there were two o-rings with back ups (flat plastic washers) in one spot and one o-ring in the other spot. I believe the single o-ring needed back ups as well. You should be able to get them from any shop that has basic hydraulic parts or on line. It looks like a well built machine that you will get years of use out of. Take care.

My first career was 27.5 years at a public golf course. We bought a new Ransomes front deck mower in 1996. Yours is older but I can’t tell how much older. Ours was similar in form factor to yours but scaled up in size and a 72” deck. The best part of the whole machine was the engine. Unfortunately the transaxle was the biggest weak point and extremely expensive to repair. It was well known as “The Ran-sometimes”. They’re essentially competitors for the Toro Groundsmaster line.

This looks VERY much like the John Deere 'F' series of 'f'ront mounted mowers mowers. I have the F725, which is gas powered and 52" deck. But they also had a diesel version, and other versions of varying sizes. It is possible that some of these Deere parts may fit (or be easily adaptable) to your unit, if you fall into the parts black hole. I'm pretty sure my F725 was made in 1973. And I still use it as my main mowing and snow blowing machine today.

Quite a popular brand of mower. Remember their RANSOMES 185D gang mowers when I was a kid at school. You've got a nice running chassis for a diy snowplough or blower project

Throw the mower deck and related bits in the scrap metal pile and mount a heavy duty garden trailer dump box on the back of the frame above the engine and radiator. If you are really industrious you could add hinges and a hydraulic cylinder to make it a dump bed. You would have to make sure the rear spindles, wheels, tires and the rest of the structure is strong enough to support more weight.

Actually considering the condition of the battery tray, I'm surprised the deck isn't in worse shape then what it is. I'm sure the battery tray was a replacement and they didn't paint it and over time the water, rodent urine, and droppings finally ate away at it. That's just my guess though. I could be very wrong. EDIT: I see what they did now. The battery tray was relocated to the outside for easy access and to fit a bigger battery maybe.

Had one of those. Was used commercially when i bought it. 3500 hrs when i bought it had 4900 when i got rid of it. Was a real decent machine, the deck belt i bought from a ransomes dealer, i believe it cost me $80. I was told those Ransome jaguar 4000 were 15,000 new.

Many years ago I used to work on Ransoms combine harvesters they were made in Ipswich England. Ransoms started in the 1800s making farm equipment and garden mowers (the push type) I have no idea if they are the same company but yours looks very much like they manufactured theirs. If it is the same company you will have a great machine because of the time that they have been making them. There certainly was a load of BS being carried about by it, I wonder if they were manure spreading as they cut grass. They also had red wheels and red and black name decals. I do believe that they went out of business in the eighties if it is the same company.

It is a one way cylinder. Only pushes out, depends on some other force to push it back in (deck weight). There is oil getting past the internal seals and getting into the space the squishes to almost nothing when cylinder is extended. So bypass oil is pushed out that little yellow breather valve to prevent the cylinder from hydrolocking before it is completely extended. P.S. Right after posting this comment you explained all this 😮

Love seeing the old grounds mowers get back into service. I've owned several. So long as water hasn't got inside the engine, or it wasn't blown to begin with... they're all pretty bulletproof, except for the transmissions. Most used Sundstrand Series 15 inline.

An amazing machine you got there. The motor alone is worth saving.

Ransomes made mowers in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. All their stuff was industrial, hence the heavy duty chassis and solid platework. They became defunct in 1998 when they became part of Textron. What you have is a nice example of a very rare piece of British engineering.

17:25 When you said those were some good bearings, I was thinking the exact same thing. I don't think I have a single machine with bearings that good, lol.

Just a piece of advice.. to avoid vibration, make sure you align those pto shaft splines so that the knuckles on you u joint are aligned.

The fact that the lift cylinder was already messed with, i would guess that they cheated and put in basic orings instead of tracking down the proper 'CUP' seals. Thats why you could use a simple off the shelf o ring kit to freshen it up. The proper seals shouldn't let any oil bypass to the vented end.

Your correct on the vented plug.. Its a single acting cylinder.. Pressure raises it & gravity lowers it.. It may be that the rubber seal on the piston dryed out . Once relubricated they sometimes expand & heal them selves... But since you tore it down , Id replace the seals.

About 6 months ago I bought one of those air bag Jack's based on your comments about it. I like it alot.

I’ve had some pretty rusty mowers in the past, but nothing this bad. 15:00, I’m surprised the little door on this particular cover didn’t fall off, it was still functional. Didn’t key at 24:19 work, since the lights came on. Like with a consumer grade machine you need to have your foot on the brake or the brake locked before it will start. 29:39, I’m glad you said it not me, I was going to suggest the seat safety.

These mowers were made less that 30 miles from where i live in the UK. Most parts are readily available in the UK.

Make sure the output shaft going to the mower clutch isn't bent,it was a weak point on those mowers,i had one. And parts are really difficult to source.

This is an interesting machine. She rough and I'm sure everything is unobtainium, but it is one that is worth saving. I've never come across a diesel mower before.

Being the OEM color of your Ransomes is green, I would venture to say mid 80s vintage. They originally had a color called Cats Eye Gold and this was their color choice of their equipment prior to the early 80s which today would look like a faded out mustard yellow in color with black decals. I've seen this model before but mainly used the Onan 16hp opposed twins along with the early Briggs Opposing twins as their power sources. Not too many came with the diesel engines in my neck of the woods here in upstate NY.

Spray air into the outside of an air filter will clog it up further. I tested OEM filters for James N Kirby Products Rockdale for car makers in the 1980 here in Sydney Australia. I certified they filtered dust efficiently. Always spray air gently from the inside of the air filter. You can even wash them in petrol to remove oil and dust.

I'd definitely be tempted for $100, I'd have to get a few more yards to mow to justify having it lol, but it wouldn't fit on half of them in the suburbs here. Nice work.

One thing the Ransomes lacked was a bypass valve on the hydro for towing. Note how the wheels were skidding when dragged off the trailer. I'd be afraid of damaging the hydro unit,

When you glow plug it, watch for a wire coil under that pepper shaker lid left of the column to start glowing orange, when it does it's ready to crank.

I've got to agree with a persons comment that possibly from sitting so long the seals are dried out on 1 side where you can't see them.

I reckon for the hydraulic fluid filter just use the make and model number for the lawn mower and hopefully that should do the trick. Good luck in part 2.

Dude, hot rodding trick...use welding electrode wire. It offers very little resistance and makes great battery cable.

Nice little tractor, I bet you can fix it up and make a really sturdy rig out of it.

Lift cylinder is internally leaking and getting to the other side of the piston and when you lift the deck up it forces out the hydraulic oil that has leaked past the piston and out the vent plug you pulled out.

Wow for a 100 dollar bill you can’t beat that. Can’t even find a single part for Diesel engine that cheap lol

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is a 753D. Ransome's still provides support for these, and the owner's manual is available through their website. I couldn't find a year range on it.
