One thing that people don't think about with the final battle between Gaston and the Beast is that the Beast was fighting in essence himself. Gaston was everything that the Prince was: selfish, arrogant, vain, and looked down on those he deemed ugly. It was his love for Belle that made him a better person. So when he had Gaston at his mercy; he realized he wasn't that selfish and mean person anymore and showed mercy. Even when taking his last breath, he didn't even care about breaking the curse or being human again. He was grateful that Belle returned and it gave him peace. It's very cool for a character arc when u think about it...

In a French version from 1946, there’s a Gaston-type character who gets turned into a beast around the same time the Beast turns back into the Prince; the Gaston character and the Beast/Prince are all played by the same actor in that version.

I’m not sure that the Beast was ever as bad as Gaston? It’s true that the Beast had a bit of a temper but he never physically harmed either Belle or her father Maurice. Everything that Gaston said near the end was Bullshit, if the Beast really was dangerous than why didn’t he ever venture outside his castle and harm others in all the years since he was cursed?

In many ways, the Beast represents the ideals that Gaston prizes, regarding physical strength, etc. And every last inch of him's covered in hair! ;) There have been a few fan-fics that pursue the idea of the Beast being a curse that is passed on from one person to the next. Prince Adam was cured by love; his curse was passed on to Gaston- who survived his fall. but found himself transformed. Then how is Gaston redeemed; how does he learn his lesson? I've seen a couple different versions of that concept; one I particularly like.

@@jmwilliamsart the idea is that gaston is what the beast could have been if he hadn't run into the enchantress. that's why in many of the earlier adaptations the beast post transformation and gaston are played by the same actor. They are opposite sides of the same coin.

Fun facts: - Belle and the beast are the only ones that wear blue. That was on purpose to make them stand out. - almost all the cast are Broadway stars - the gargoyles you see throughout the castle are early designs of looks for the beast - Be our guest was originally going to be when Maurice comes to the palace, but the directors did not want this amazing number to be for a side character

The Beast is a combination of different animals. His supervising animator Glen Keane (who also designed Ariel, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Tarzan) gave the Beast the head and beard of a bison, a combination of different horns, the body and arms of a bear, the legs and tail of a wolf, the brow of a gorilla, the tusks of a wild boar, the ears of a cow, the jaws, teeth, and mane of a lion, and the eyes of the Prince to show the humanity trapped inside.

Ladies you've picked the BEST DISNEY CLASSIC ever!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!!!!!!!! It is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE Disney movie!!!!!! I've watched it countless times throughout my ENTIRE LIFE that I recite the prologue BY HEART!!!!!!! I would memorize everything; from the prologue to every line and a peculiar scene of the movie just carefully listening to the score of the movie. It might seem AND sound crazy, but it's true. Belle is my #1 favorite Disney princess and I've alway felt so connected to her. She and the Beast are my top favorite Disney couple because Beast matures and changes into a better person for Belle. Even when he gave her the castle library as token of his affections, I thought it was the kindest, most beautiful, most romantic thing he has done. I just love everything about it: The prologue, the whole storyline, the characters and their designs, Belle's personality and open mind, the music... EVERYTHING!!!!! I love how Disney reimagined and told this classic fairytale in their style. And in my opinion, I believe the Disney version of this classic fairytale teaches us a very valid yet valuable life lesson.

Fun fact. In the original Grimm version of this story, Prince Adam a.k.a Beast was _not_ cursed for being mean to an old lady. He was cursed for turning down the marriage proposal of an old lady, and not just any old lady but his former caretaker from when he was a baby. She was a fairy who came to the human world for work and got a job as his nurse when he was little. Then when he hit his teens she got ideas. No, in the original story, prince Adam was just as much a victim as Bell. There was a second good fairy that helped him figure out a way to break the curse. The original is a lot longer and more complicated than the Disney version

Hi, big Beauty and the Beast fan here. I’ll just point out that Beauty and the Beast is NOT a Grimm fairytale, nor was it even collected by the Brothers in any collection. The original story was actually a whole novel. It was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740, though the one that most people are aware of is a 1756 abridged version that was published by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. The original Villeneuve version didn’t just cover the Beast’s backstory, but also strangely enough Beauty’s, as it’s revealed that she isn’t actually the daughter of the merchant who trespassed into the Beast’s castle, but rather the daughter of a king and a different fairy, who placed her into the merchant’s care for her protection and also as a very convenient way to swap out his ACTUAL daughter who had died at birth. So yeah, Beauty, who is a legit princess with actual fairy blood, is also a changeling on a technicality. In a side note, the only reason the Prince’s evil fairy godmother was even in charge of him was because his father had died when he was very young and-I kid you not here-his own mother had to wage war against another kingdom in order to protect him, even going to the frontlines herself. So she couldn’t be there to stop the fairy she left in charge of her son from preying upon him. And on a final note, I will also causally point out that it’s also revealed that Beauty and the Prince are cousins, as their parents were related at least somewhat distantly. Keep in mind that back then it was okay for cousins to marry, but still a bit of a yikes for anyone seeking out the original tale, which despite that elephant in the room, I can recommend for anyone who wants to see where it all started.

A few things. The voice of Lumiere was Jerry Orbach, who as a much younger man was a big song and dance man on Broadway. He became known as "Mr. Broadway", and when he died, the lights were turned off in tribute to him. The supervising animators of Lumiere and Cogsworth, Nik Ranieri and Will Finn, had a similar relationship as they drove each other insane. They worked on their characters in different rooms because if they were in the same room during this movie, the chances were high that they would've likely killed each other. Angela Lansbury, Mrs. Potts, sang the title song in the ballroom scene in just one take. Robby Benson, the voice of Beast/Prince, auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. He also had 4 open heart surgeries. Walt Disney tried and failed to make this story into a movie twice. The animation team did this movie in 2 years. Jeffrey Katzenberg introduced the concept of deadlines to the animation department when he was placed in charge. It originally had 3 years, but the first year was used up on a version that didn't impress the guys in charge. They also recycled a few things from other Disney films, such as the mist from The Black Cauldron and the end scene from Sleeping Beauty. The 2017 live-action is, in my opinion, an adaptation that can and does stand well on its own as it expands the story and explains a few things, including Belle's mother and Beast's relationship with his parents.

Soooooo this movie is amazing with so many great layers of lessons and symbolism that can reach people and be interpreted in so many ways. But just in terms of the beast and a human being altered in that form, and everyone looking at you and reacting to you like a beast will make you act and start to think that you are one. It reminds me a little of this play/story called metamorphosis. It’s about a man who is turned into a human sized beetle, now the man retains all his humanity and memories, can speak perfectly and is able to convince all the people that he’s knows that he is who he says he is. But because he looks the way he does and every reacts to him a certain way because of what he looks like he begins to act like a real beetle based on the fact everyone perceives him as such and so he begins to perceive himself that way.

Thank you so much for this reaction! I got a chance to play the role of Maurice back when I was a sophomore. Yes I highly recommend you react to the 2017 live action remake. There’s a lot more details, a lot of character development, and the new songs go perfectly with the film. Also if you didn’t know in the original script, there’s a deleted song called Human Again; it takes place between Something There and Beauty and the Beast. During the musical number the servants work together to clean up the castle and prepare for dinner as Belle and the Beast read her favorite book. It’s revealed the Beast had forgotten how to read and how it could bring comfort and joy. As Belle teaches him to read, she asks him to accompany her for another dinner. If you wanted to see more Angela Lansbury I must also recommend Nanny McPhee which also costars Emma Thompson. #BestDisneyLoveStory #RIPAngelaLangsbury 👩🏽👹🕯🕰🫖☕️🌹🥀💛💙❤️

I will always treasure this masterpiece. The romance in this is vastly better compared to the live action movie. In this one, Beast is scary longer and I really love the subtle things that the characters have to do to change. Even the roar that Beast had when Belle leaves has more impact because it really transmits his grief and anguish much better than the song in the remake.

When I was little I've always thought that Belle was the witch that cast the spell on to him and she permanently became a human and her memories got erased and blah blah blah.

There are some cool variations on the Beauty & The Beast concept that you might enjoy as well : [1997-FEB-07] THE BEAUTICIAN & THE BEAST (A romantic comedy starring Fran Drescher) [2017-MAR-17] BEAUTY & THE BEAST (Live Action version of the Disney classic starring Emma Watson) [2017-DEC-22] THE SHAPE OF WATER (A new twist in where the beast is an aquatic creature akin to the "gill man" from the Black Lagoon) [2011-MAR-04] BEASTLY (A modernized re-telling, where the "price" is a narcissistic ego-maniacal superstar) [2016-SEP-26] LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE (BEAUTY & THE BEAST)
