Dry Ice Cold Air Intake: Does Frozen Air Make More Horsepower?

The first mod for a car you probably maybe ever head of was the infamous "cold air intake". Aside from making rad induction noises though... did they actually make more power from cold air? Or was it a restriction thing? We build an overly excessive contraption to really see if cold air makes more power.

I think when the car was going down the track it got through all the co2 pretty quickly at the beginning of the run and then was getting mostly oxygen after that, the dry ice couldn't make enough co2 compared to how much air was flowing through the chests. An intercooler would be ideal, but a purge system could also work.

@BelieveItYaKnow

unique username this is what nitrous tries to achieve.. nitrous is an oxygenator which introduces more oxygen.. which means leaner mixture.. which means you need more fuel to even out the afr’s .. which in turn gives more power because oxygen+fuel=more power.. the purity of the oxygen isn’t nearly as important as the amount of oxygen you trying to pump into the engine..

The issue you have here is less air, dry ice cools and releases c02, which will not add to a stagnant car, but will compensate when air starts moving. You should do the updates I suggested on the compressed air upgrade you attempted. Edit: thumbs up Fire extinguishers use c02 to snuff out fires.

this would have worked out better using copper tubing funneling it through the intake and having the dry ice sitting on the copper,think 10 copper tubes about 1/4 inch in diameter splayed apart like fingers soldered together at the end point into a circle where you couple the intake.

you made less because you should have run pipe through the cold boxes so the dry ice doesn't go into the engine. the dr ice gas displaces the o2

From what I can remember from school dry ice produces CO2 gas which does not burn if anything it puts out fire you can do intercoolers packed in dry ice with air running through it or you can do oxygen injection with the intercooler and put the air filter at the source where the air goes in

Who didn't watch engine masters? (Should have used some copper line to chill the fuel) (Engine Masters showed that cold fuel with ambient temperature air made power.)

you should build intercoolers with piping into the boxed with dry ice, so no gasses from the dry ice mix with the intake air messing with the oxygen level.

If you would use the dry ice air as the only intake it should theoretically make more as observed on the track run as the pressure of the air pushed in to the fan increased due to the cars speed therefore bypassing the air coming from that filter(as you have a filter and then the dry ice apparatus connected to intake it is mix the air up what if you use the filter to pull in air to the dry ice box and it goes to the engine without a break as the engine would have a vacuum effect on this setup then if you include that fan it might work like a small cold turbo) just a hypothesis

That's kinda what they did. This was more a "Displacement on Demand" test than anything. This is like an alternative to "EGR". If they had a fuel injection system on with the dry ice air intake system, they should get increased fuel economy as the CO2 will displace some of the air in the cylinders and the EFI system would then inject less fuel. It's probably the most expensive EGR system EVER to operate, though...

On the dyno the fan on the roof had to push the air throught the coolers, so maybe the wind on the fan blades when the car was moving helped to push the air through the coolers, which made more power because more airflow?
