If you're not using at least 4 compressors on your drums, you're not living life! Plugin Designer Gregory Scott spends thirty minutes explaining why. Enjoy!

By far one of the best videos, I have watched. There are a lot of videos of mixers trying to explain what they do, but to actually watch them do it, unsolicited, in his natural element with no one is a real treat. I wasn't really concerned with what was going on with the sliders as I was with what Greg was doing with his facial expressions, body language, and eye movement. Watching how he listens, evaluates, adjusts, you can literally see when he is grooving to something and when he does not like something in his facial expressions. That is the gold stuff right there people at least for me, I get so much more information from his body language than I ever do by watching sliders on a screen move. Thank you, Gregory Scott, your videos are giving me an edge in school and have helped me tremendously in a very short time.

Man, thanks for getting it. There's a reason I keep my face on the screen the whole time and it's not because I want people to adore my grizzly mug. I've had the privilege of being in the room watching some top level guys work, and by far the most informative thing for me was what I saw on their face. A close second was where they were looking. By far my favorite aspect of mixing on an analog console is that you spend most of the time looking at the music, or (better) closing your eyes and turning knobs. People who mix ITB have never had that experience, which is a bummer. Anyway, thanks for paying attention 🤜🏻🤛🏽

Let me just take a second to appreciate what I'm hearing and looking at. I'm part of this new generation that learned everything through the internet, I've watched far too many videos on sound recording, mixing, playing. I come back to this channel, specifically the how to hear compression video, very frequently to reset my ears. You have not only understood the intricate emotionality of sound, but you've have figured out how to teach it far beyond the quality any school could offer. I always found it curious that videos made by and for sound engineers sound and look quite bad. But Gregory, you have perfected it. The balance between your voice and the music is perfect, the tone of your voice is perfectly unintrusive, you make the most minute, minimal, microscopic difference in tone sound worlds apart. You make 30 minute single take, single angle videos far more informative and thought provoking than any course or workshop I've sat through. It's the small things, you're not an engineer, you're an artist. Your visual presentation is inspiring, the framing and color composition of your videos is exactly what is needed to get into the zone without being distracting. In short, I'm amazed. Every time I've wanted to explain the finesse in what we do to someone I've either shown them your videos or tried to emulate what I felt when I first found your channel. Thank you for being the absolute best teacher on this platform, thank you for giving this to us for free.

@@TheHouseofKushTV I will sign up if it's online in the evening :) Combining a work life with family and music isn't always easy. At the moment I am struggling with a track where the snare and clap have too much dynamics, now the problem is that it's not consistent. When I encounter problems like that, I am instantly looking through your channel to see if any video would fit what problem I have. I like them so much. You are very calm and good with explaining the technical details so that everyone can understand it. As I understand, some people use saturation and then hit a compressor to limit the dynamic range. Others just slam a limiter on the track and others are using only a limiter. I am actually thinking about surgically going in and editing these single hits that has too much volume to solve it. It can be quite unpleasant to listen to, especially because snare and claps are quite high frequency with fast attack already. Got some thinking to do... :)

When you said you were going to explain with your body how you felt the different compression grooves I thought I had gotten to "that point" in compression videos where I get lost in the intention of it all. I can often understand what many of the compressor moves are doing, but I've always struggled to understand how they fit in a bigger picture, and usually people's explanations don't do much to help. This was not at all the case in this video. Everything clicked with the hand movements, goddammit. You rock.

I've been using parallel compression on my drums for years, but never thought to have more than one compressed version. The idea of having several compressed versions each bringing to the table a different aspect of the sound was mind blowing for me. I've just given it a try with my current mix and the result is one of the best drum sounds I've ever gotten -- and it's a poorly tracked live recording with more bleed than a slaughterhouse! Thanks for the paradigm shift.

That frenetic compression is brutal! Fascinating way of doing it. The classic trope is again, correct... "The more you can separate the sounds, the greater control you have on the mix." Fantastic stuff, less is definitely more. Also, nice to hear someone else using the painting comparison. 🙂

I play a lot of small venues with some pretty heavy acts and through application and of course some simplification, I manage to bring out tone and clarity like never before.. truly shape and color the room to the best volume of course, but a smooth groove and plenty of punch to feel it in your bones... with out the ear ring or ear ware... a dynamic mix... so thank you for taking the time to teach, explain, and most all to share the passion and excitement of it all...

Another great video! I watch them over and over, love everyone of them. Would you consider doing a video about how you get such a smooth cymbal sounds?

This was very helpful. I've experimented a little with Parallel Compression, but only ever ONE in Parallel, and then only "smashed" (underneath subtle). Most of the time I use just one Compressor, and then decide what texture I want with that one option; I've never thought of using multiple Compressors to create a sound that blends several options! Thank you. Brilliant advice. Love your presentation, btw.

I loved the way you portrayed the different sounds with your hands. I'll be using these descriptors in the future. My friends will think I'm really weird.

Always listen to you during bedtime before I sleep, and things register. You have no idea how instrumental your advice over this last year has been in my production and mixing skills and I'm constantly complimented never-endingly how amazingly pro they now sound. You're the fucking best brother. Also you've finally managed to get rid of the ilok dongle requirement! I have just subscribed to your all in pack minutes ago and can't wait to hear how these sexy babies sound cause the reviews online have been nothing but stellar!
