I've finally done it! After almost four years of being on KZfaq covering NASCAR I have finally done this right of passage by making my own "what if" custom NASCAR schedule video. In this video I want to show you all how I would change NASCAR's schedule and how I think it would benefit the sport.
NOTE: This is a hypothetical schedule, NOT A PREDICTION VIDEO!

Great video, Jaret! I really like a lot of your ideas, and your thinking aligned with some of my ideas of my own schedule I drafted mine a few weeks ago while at work. Here's my schedule, on the calendar year of 2026: Feb 8th - Clash Feb 12th - Duels Feb 15th - Daytona Feb 22nd - Sonoma Mar 1st - Auto Club Mar 8th - Phoenix Mar 15th - Las Vegas Mar 22nd - Rockingham Mar 29th - Atlanta Easter Break Apr 12th - Nashville Fairgrounds Apr 19th - Richmond Apr 26th - Talladega May 3rd - Circuit of the Americas May 9th - Martinsville May 16th - All-Star (Bristol Dirt) May 24th - Charlotte May 31st - Dover Jun 7th - Pocono Jun 14th - Road America Summer Break #1 Jun 28th - Nashville Jul 4th - Daytona Jul 8th - IRP Jul 12th - Indianapolis Jul 18th - Gateway Jul 26th - Montreal Aug 2nd - New Hampshire Aug 9th - Watkins Glen Summer Break #2 Aug 23rd - Michigan Aug 29th - Bristol Sep 6th - Darlington Sep 13th - Kansas Sep 20th - Texas Sep 27th - Talladega Oct 4th - Charlotte Roval Oct 11th - Martinsville Oct 18th - Homestead A few notes notes: My schedule is for a full season points format, not a playoff format. I put some wild card tracks near the end of the year to help spice up the championship battle. It's easy to see why fans said the championships were boring when boring tracks made up the last 3 or 4 races of the year. I put Rockingham as the first race back from the west coast swing since it's a short driveaway from Charlotte. I have a Northeastern Swing before the final break. I have 3 breaks all roughly 2 months apart. Just like you, Jaret, I gave Daytona, Talladega, & Martinsville 2 dates. That's pretty funny that we both had that same idea. Lastly, I tried to make it where there was a different type of track every week to keep things from getting stale as much as possible

Idea 1: Here me out. My season would have 33 races. This isn’t my home town track. It’s not the best track ever built, and you can even fit a full field of cars. Up north, just near the Canadian border, is Spud Speedway in Caribou, Maine. The track holds weekly specials and has lights. The track is just 1/3 of a mile though. So, here’s my plan. Drivers from all 3 top tier series show up to the track on Saturday morning, 40 cars qualify for an a main and a b main. 1/3 mile tracks can fit up to 30 cars but I want some room for passing. The b main will be the bottom 20 qualifiers. Top 3 make it to a main. The b main will be held on Sunday a 1:00pm. After all the qualifying the day before. The a main will be held on Sunday night at 7:45pm. (Night sky in the middle of the woods in Maine) The a main will be 50 laps longer than the b main and will be 400 laps or 100 miles. Here’s the twist. When I said drivers from each of the top tier series will show up. I meant driving a car from their usual series. So cup cars, xfinity cars, and trucks all on 1 track together. The winner will automatically be locked into any cup race of their choosing. If they decline the cup race. They get paid back whatever they spent on the trip and equiptment like tires and fuel + $10,000. The reason I pick this track is because the track has been in trouble recently. The track is usually packed with local fans trying to see any bit of racing they can, but nobody can make it work. A revolving door of owners have come in and out with little to no success and the track may fall into disrepair if their last somewhat major late model series stops showing up. The track owner is so desperate for help that he has been trying to sell the track and it’s land for only $475,000. This would be a fun little way to save a local track so far away from everything else. (Did I mention that the track is almost a circle and the backstretch guard rail is about 15ft away from the asphalt at the bottom of a tiny hill.) It would give TV viewers something for sure and a way to help locals save their track do they don’t have to travel 14+ hours just to see another weekly racing circuit slugfest that ends up getting rained out by unpredictable New Hampshire weather. Idea 2: NASCAR’s first ever endurance race. Like the Rolex 24 that is hosted by IMSA every year, the race will be at Daytona, but not on the road course. 60 cars will enter, 20 from each of the top 3 divisions. The race will start at 3pm and end at 8am. An 18 hour race. Now, 60 cars and 3 drivers each is a lot to ask for, and you’re 100% correct. However, we don’t need to stay within just NASCAR either. Guys like Bill Elliot may be willing to hop in a car with maybe Chase and some other guy who’s car didn’t enter. Teams would also shrink to work together, For example; Wood Brothers would merge with Penske and only run the 2 and 22 leaving the 12, 33, and 21 out of the race. Those drivers, a long with some IMSA guy willing to try something new would drive the open cars. JGR and Hendrick can do the same. Some people who maybe haven’t run in a few years and are freshly retired like Danica Patrick and Jamie McMurray can run. Some people who have experience in a car but haven’t run in forever can run the middle portion of the race like Brad Keselowski’s brother Brian and maybe a cup series equivalent of Chris Fontaine, who will be eligible to run trucks. Indycar guys can join as well as F1 if they’re up to it. Really any major series. Hell, have Ken Block go out there, I don’t care. Also, in case you are unfamiliar with this style of endurance racing, IMSA has different classes, such as prototype and GT. If you race a prototype and a GT together, the GT will be 40mph slower. So they race prototypes against prototypes, and GTs against GTs, but at the same time, kind of like 3 different races happening at the same time, just on the same track. Also, it would be a very light hearted event. Winning team gets $500,000 to split amongst teams and drivers. There would almost certainly be hilarious interviews of drivers perhaps if they crash or something and one of the guys can’t race then. I think it would super cool to watch and would just be a great event. You could run it just ever the championship race, maybe 2 or 3 weekends after. Most other sports won’t collide since you can literally watch it at 3am if you wanted to. Helton and France would never do it, but if I was in control you bet it would happen. If you’re still reading, you’re a frickin’ real one.

The number of races each year is specified in the TV contracts. Both Fox and NBC want 18 races, plus practice and qualifying, every season. NASCAR would have to willingly take a significant reduction in TV money to reduce the schedule next time they negotiate new deals. Daytona, Talladega, Bristol, and Martinsville need to get 2 dates every year. After that, I'd like to see second dates decided by percentage of tickets sold. Tracks that provide a good fan experience, and good racing, get rewarded. Tracks that don't lose out. Track owners and promoters having to compete against each other for dates would benefit the entire sport.

I've been wondering why they haven't had single races for each track, that way they open up the schedule. It opens it up for more tracks to come on board, and also it helps to get more people there. I think it helps get people there because it almost "forces" them to get to that track if they want to see the race on that particular weekend- no waiting for the second race. I definitely agree with your look at the schedule. I like the shortening of some races, starting them at the same time, and putting in some new tracks.

Here are my ideas; -a 30 to 32 race season -More short tracks -No Dirt Tracks (Modern NASCAR racing belongs on the pavement) -No stages -4 or 5 road courses -No Playoffs -Instead there will be either a vintage full season points format or -The 2011 Chase format will be reestablished at a 5 or 7 race length --I'd also be cool with the 04 or 07 formats (at shorter lengths) -Daytona on July 4th (I'd even to willing to run it on the road course) -The Brickyard should be run on the oval -The Bristol Night Race should be run at the end of August -This last one might be unrealistic but, no more plate racing

Indycar somehow pulls a better weeks between race average with 1.3 on its dreadfully spaced schedule. I understand it can bring the pain to teams but what if we did more like Daytona where they did two weeks in a row on different layouts. Here's mine - I primarily focused on geography, as with the new cars being able to run all kinds of tracks (and not be bespoke like they are now) means that you might be able to go multiple races without having to go back to Charlotte. Also similar to yours, I cut down every non-Daytona track to 1 race, exceptions being for Charlotte and Daytona's road courses, gave all the non night/west coast tracks a 1pm start, and have night races for the last 7 races of the season, as to fit them onto NBC between college football and NFL football timeslots. Lastly, I don't have the playoffs, because like S1apSh0es says, "the playoffs are dumb and stupid and this is my schedule so I'm not doing them" February 20 Daytona February 27 Daytona RC March 6 Homestead March 13 Mexico City March 20 Phoenix March 27 Auto Club April 3 Sonoma April 10 Las Vegas April 17 -- OFF WEEK -- April 24 COTA May 1 Texas May 8 Talladega May 15 Rockingham May 22 Charlotte RC May 29 Charlotte (day/night race) June 5 Gateway June 12 Kansas June 19 Iowa June 26 Road America July 3 Indianapolis July 10 Michigan July 17 -- OFF WEEK -- July 24 Montreal July 31 New Hampshire August 7 Watkins Glen August 14 Pocono August 21 Dover August 27 Richmond (night race) September 4 Darlington (night race) September 10 Atlanta (night race) September 17 Martinsville (night race) September 24 Bristol (night race) October 1 Nashville (night race) October 5 ALL STAR RACE (precedes season finale) October 8 Daytona (night race)

I recently had this debate and had a schedule made up. I also made a few changes to really bring nascar back to where it should be. Daytona Daytona Road Course Atlanta Las Vegas Auto Club Phoenix Bristol Martinsville Richmond Talladega COTA Charlotte Sonoma Pocono Michigan Nashville Daytona Chicagoland Kentucky Road America Milwaukee Mile Indianapolis New Hampshire Watkins Glen Bristol Darlington Richmond Atlanta Kansas Charlotte Roval Dover North Wilkesboro Talladega Texas Martinsville Homestead No Chase for the cup. No stages. The same good old points system we have come to love with 1-43 for positions 43-1. However i would like to add the Formula 1 specialty of 1 bonus point for fastest lap for the finisher in the top 20. 3 points for most laps led. 5 points for winning. This will still priortize winning and will also allow those who run at the front all year to be able to stay with it if say they lead the most laps alot but don't win.

I think they should do away with the chase. Keep the same point system, but give extra points for leading a lap, and leading the most laps. I think it would make the racing better. Also have all oval tracks equipped with lights, just in case of a weather issue. I do agree with the earlier start times. Moving the Daytona 500 up a week isn't too bad of an idea. It would make speedweeks run together, rather than having any empty week in between the Rolex 24 and the. Other races.

Pretty good schedule, only thing I disagree with is 1 Getting rid of the Pocono double header, it's unique and has helped produced some good racing as of late. Plus how many races inverse the field from the previous race? I'm probably one of the few that would like to see the first race the original 500 miles then a short mad dash the next day. 2 Speaking of racing traditions, how about the Milwaukee mile? It's the second oldest motor race track in the country only behind the fairgrounds. I guess it might be too close to Road America for some peoples comforts but it would be cool to see it.

the only thing I really don't like is Bristol dirt during the day. Dirt racing generally runs at night for good reason, and I think the visibility would be easier at night even with a bunch of Cup cars kicking up dust. Also, if the Cup series is gonna stay the top series, I think it needs to stay above 400 miles except on those short tracks where it's in KM instead. Long, endurance races are what drew me into NASCAR in the early 00s and late 90s. Yes, the middle of the races can *appear* boring, but long-term strategy is what makes racing the greatest, imo.

I'd love to see some international races at some point if NASCAR were ever to get popular enough for it. A race at Circuit Gilles Villnueve or Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez would be cool. NASCAR did some exhibition races in Australia and Japan back in the day, so it'd be cool if the sport was ever in a situation where that type of thing could be financially viable. Personally, I think a double header at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan, one on the oval and one on the road course, would be really cool. I know it's not viable right now, but a man can dream.

I like a lot of this. Eliminate more second dates, try to avoid conflicts with the NFL, add back Rockingham and North Wilksboro, shorten the races at intermediate tracks, better geography for teams, minimizing rainouts. Here's where I'd differ: Move the Clash back to it's traditional format. Try to keep the 36 race schedule, though given the goal to avoid conflict with the NFL that may not be possible. I like night races, so that could be a solution to the NFL problem. 5 road course races is one too many, IMO. Also, I do like the Brickyard 400, I mean, c'mon it's Indy. Also, I'm not so certain Nashville will support two races, along with an Indy and SRX race. Also, I'd add a race at Iowa Speedway. I'd consider adding back Chicago since that along with Kansas were my favorite 1.5 mile tracks. But, if we now have races at Road America, Iowa, Gateway, and Indy, Chicago might not draw that well. Pikes Peak and Memphis Motorsports park are still around and have layouts that aren't currently on the schedule. I'd be curious to know if their facilities could host a Cup race. I believe Memphis is hosting ARCA races. If I could really play God I'd return Bristol's old layout and add bring back both 500 lap races and move the Cup's dirt race to Eldora.

I probably stand alone on this rock, but as much as I despise plate racing, I believe that you should end the season the way it started, at Daytona for the absolute last race of the championship. It would incentivize race teams and drivers to try and get up front to avoid midpack big crashes. Also it would shake up the last race to an absolute chaotic mystery. If not, end it at Charlotte Oval with the all star race a week *after* the season ends, so there's no pressure of worrying about detrimental effects of during the season. Plus that makes it a good tie into the Nashville post season celebration.
