A New Zealand MP made a powerful speech in Maori language for her first appearance in parliament, resurfaced video shows.
Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, 21, first spoke in parliament on 12 December, performing a traditional haka.
She is the youngest MP to be elected to New Zealand's parliament in 170 years, after James Stuart-Wortley, who was elected in 1853 aged 20 years and 7 months.
Maipi-Clarke was emotional in the chamber as she said: "We have arrived. We are here. We are sailing. We are navigating, just like our ancestors once did, in the biggest ocean in the world."

I'm going through a very stressful moment in my life right now, but I still have to work the night shift today. My energy was drained while I was working. Suddenly, I remembered how emotional the Haka dance is and decided to watch it. For God's sake, my tears flowed, and energy surged through me right then. Discovering the Haka dance is one of the best things that has happened in my life.

As far as I know, please forgive me if I’m wrong, on that day she demanded the lifting of the ban and full permission to resume sales of Mokomokai - the cut off and dried heads of people with special tattoos. These are exactly those heads that Maori exchanged for weapons with Europeans to destroy each other in the past. How idiotically naive and stupid we all look, people who are sold a picture taken out of context, without ensuring what is actually happening.

In other words, she wants ancient Maori artifacts returned from foreign collectors. Indigenous people all over the world are asking for the same thing. It's asking for respect for their culture, rather than treating their precious symbols like sales goods. AND that was only one of the things she requested that day. The haka was something else-rather a declaration that she would be fighting for her people and her people's interests in Parliament.
@scutoid-backrooms
@scutoid-backrooms Ай бұрын
she wants them repatriated, which is different. they're culturally very important and literally the heads of maori people, they should be returned to new zealand. you highlight that they are dismembered heads as if she wants more made, you highlight the fact that they were traded for weapons in the past as if that's what she's advocating for today.
