This makes me happy I've been learning Brazilian Portuguese. The new possibilities that open up from knowing multiple languages is just incredible, and human connection can be so beautiful 💚💛💙

why Brazilian?
@DrummerrDuckie Жыл бұрын
@@peacekeeper865 I think I've gathered many reasons at my current point in my language learning journey, but I can start from the very first one, but do be warned that I tend to ramble and go into far too much detail. See, Overwatch (before OW2 was made official) had a special event dedicated to the character Reaper, and I decided to log into my Twitch, which I had barely ever used, to leave Overwatch streams playing in the background so that I could get watch time that would give me the event rewards for Reaper. So, I was on Twitch for the first time in months, hopping from streamer to streamer. Many streamers were ending when I clicked on them and would raid out to someone who wasn't playing OW or had drops enabled, and other streamers I clicked on had a kind of energy or vibe that I just felt uncomfortable with. Well, I happened to see one particular streamer stand out while scrolling through the OW category. I noticed that the selected language wasn't English, but reassured myself that I didn't need to understand what was being said in order to get reward progress or even enjoy watching the streamer if I decided to stay and pay attention. So, I clicked on him. When I did, there was a window that popped up above the chat box that offered me the opportunity to introduce myself and have my first message mark me as a newcomer to the channel. It also said that this pop up would only appear the one time, and that if I closed off the window if would never reappear. I hesitate, unsure if I would even be understood, but stayed and watched for a while. The guy seemed super kind and had a friendly energy, and I decided to give the introduction prompt a try. I typed up my message and I pressed send. When he noticed and read my message not too long after, he greeted me, switching to English and saying that he was better at reading and hoped I could understand him well. He started to switch between languages, talking to both me and the others typing into chat. He would ask questions directed at me in English, he occasionally repeat and explain what he was talking about with the others to me so that I had context, and he generally made me feel so welcomed and included. I ended up staying for the rest of his stream, even after he switched off of Overwatch to play other games. I figured the OW drops could wait. When he was ending his stream, I noticed everyone kept saying "beijos," which I translated out of curiosity. It meant "kisses," and was the first word I learned from this language. It took this long for me to even pay proper attention to the language tag he had on his stream: Portuguese. To be fair, he had done a very good jog at keeping me engaged with his stream, and I loved the streamer-viewer interactions very much. Several google searches later, I was checking how difficult it was to learn Portuguese (relatively easy for an English speaker like myself!) and learning how to say hello (olá and oi) and how to ask "how are you?" ("Tudo bem?" and "tudo bom?") My intrigue was thoroughly piqued at this point, and I just felt so moved and inspired and excited. I just had this deep desire to _connect_ and to learn about things beyond my familiar horizons. I feel slightly embarrassed to admit that, before all of this even happened, I didn't even know anything about Portuguese, Brazil, or Portugal, not even the fact that any of them existed. But I wanted to change that. And so I did. My curiosity and sudden thirst to learn made sure of it. Since I was quick to realize from my google searches that there were two options for me to learn, Portugal Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese, I recalled the twitch streamer's channel bio. Upon translation, I learned that he was from São Paulo, so he was likely speaking Brazilian Portuguese. I turned to google once more to further compare the two options to each other, and I firmly and happily settled on Brazilian Portuguese. Now that I had chosen which version of Portuguese I wanted to learn, I began teaching myself as best as I could, and continued by learning the alphabet and phonetics. Knowing how the letters are pronounced to insanely useful when someone is spelling something out for you or if they ask how you're spelling something, and Portuguese being a phonetic language helped greatly in being easy to read once you understand what make what sound. I had started my language learning journey in 2022, February 25th, and just five days later, on the 1st of March, something else amazing happened. I happened to be scrolling through the bios/introductions in a public discord server. A particularly vibrant profile picture caught my attention, and I stopped to read it. The person had typed that he was a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese! I checked if his DMs were open (thankfully they were), then sent him a message asking if he wanted to language swap so we could both practice. He agreed, and he became my first ever true and best friend. Just one click, and I didn't just watch a streamer. I had one year of such an amazing journey, learning about a beautiful culture and people, meeting my best friend, feeling the sheer drive and excitement of learning all these new things... I've never made a better decision in all of my life, and my journey is nowhere near finished yet. I would absolutely love to visit Brazil one day, and maybe even get the chance to see my best friend in person. And who knows, maybe one day I'd even get to meet the man who inspired me to learn his native language in the first place. I know this was a lot to read, but I really wanted to try and capture the beauty of it all and share with you the immense amount of love and passion I've learned to hold for Brazil, it's people, and all of the native speakers of Portuguese. It's been a wonderful and eye opening experience, and I hope to keep improving my ability to read and speak in Portuguese every single day. It's slow without a paid teacher, but I've found many online sources to help me, and I've got my best friend to help ensure that whatever I'm learning is accurate. And one day, I'm going to become fluent. That's one decision that I know I'm never going to go back on, especially not after how far I've already come.

@@DrummerrDuckieMuito bem feito! Clever, too. Us in Portugal understand Brazilian Portuguese well, but Brazilians have more trouble with understanding us in Portugal. One day, if you ever feel like challenging yourself, try listening to European Portuguese and see if you understand. If you do, you know you’ve really learned the language well!
