He ended that set by sacrificing his guitar at the end of "Wild thing". He got on his knees with the guitar in front of him. He drenched it in lighter fluid and set it on fire. Then he stood up and grabbed the guitar by the neck and smashed it until it broke into 2 pieces and threw them both into the crowd and walked off stage. POP CULTURE HISTORY.

After all these years and all these guitarists I've idolised, he still is the most natural I have ever seen. He really is. I feel like you could have handed him a strat after a year in a straightjacket and he'd still demonstrate supernatural ability without pausing for breath. He made the guitar an extension of himself and he really could do whatever he wanted with it in any moment.

You should have been here in the 60's and early 70's for the HUGE amount of awesome music, psychedelic rock, metal, r&b, soul, folk ... the list goes on and on. I was a mere lad of 13 in 1970, when a friend handed me a bootleg 8-track tape of Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock. I was stunned, having a hard time believing that he could make his guitar produce the sounds I was hearing. Time and many many years of hearing and seeing the legend proved it to me. I was a video producer in 2009, and was part of the Woodstock 40th Anniversary tribute concert in SF in Golden Gate Park that year. On the Friday afternoon before the event started, I was driven to a lonely tower and told I would be filming there all weekend. What a drag. Out in the wind, getting yelled at by the stoners, etc. As I was starting to set up my camera gear, up drives a guy in a golf cart, wearing a cowboy hat. "Hey you" he yelled at me, "grab your gear and come with me." Next thing you know I'm BACKSTAGE in the artist interview tent, where they come to, right after being on stage. Holy Crap!. I become Camera 3, fixed tight shot on the artist, and hold it steady. Yeah! What a weekend. I still have all the interviews from that event. Jimi on lead guitar, Mitch Mitchell on drums, Noel Redding on bass. These three are THE BEST!!!! SRV is just a disciple of this man, like so many others. This is the REAL DEAL. Jimi could play guitar with his teeth, over his head, behind his back, and between his legs. Jimi did not do this first. He learned the technique at gigs in Seattle. At his first gig in UK at Regents Polytechnic in London, he came on and jammed with Cream. Nobody jammed with Cream. Cream are gods. Well, well.....let's see about that....here comes the GUITAR GOD himself. Jimi played Howlin' Wolfs Killing Floor, and he wiped the floor with everyone.....including Cream. He did the usual stunts like playing over his head, with his teeth, and behind his back, but at one point he crouched down on stage and 'humped' the guitar. Ha, ha! Ginger Baker did not know what to say, and Eric Clapton stood with his mouth open. Jimi had arrived. Move over, here comes the GUITAR GOD!!!! I was there, and was with Jimi from that point on musically. There was nobody like him then, and there has been nobody to match him since his death in 1970. Totally unique and precious beyond words. Light years musically beyond everyone. Beyond good. Not just good. Musically on another plane, another planet, but not selfish. Prepared to share with other guitarists. Could hear the sounds in his head and pluck them from the air. I call that gifted. How good? You simply could not believe that a man could do what Jimi did with a guitar. I've been a Hendrix fan since I was 11 years old, I was musically traumatized in a good way FOREVER, and I'm now that I'm 68 WELL, I only came here NOT to hear Jimi Hendrix but primarily to see your reaction; and is it any way similar to what I EXPERIENCED when I was 11 years old hence the appropriate name "THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE"! I still get sad sometimes thinking of what could have been. Jimi had only been playing the guitar about 14 or 15 years when he passed.

John Lee Hooker recorded the song Boogie Chillen in 1948 and it was 3 minutes eleven seconds long. In 1970 he re-recorded it with the band Canned Heat. That version is 11 minutes and 33 seconds long. I’d love to see your reaction to that song. 👍

Jimi was way ahead of his time. No one was doing what he was. He’s responsible for more guitar players than anyone. I took up playing guitar because of him. The first song I ever heard from him was Machine Gun from the Band of Gypsies album. Before I heard that song I was learning how to play the drums. After hearing it I started playing the guitar. I recommend that album to listen to. Some really great playing on that one.

I have this DVD and cherish it. This is his first concert in the US with the Experience. Covers Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor and Bob Dylan. Jams a different version of Foxey Lady and ends with Wild Thing, where he plays behind his back, between his legs, rolls on the stage, humps the amp, sacrifices his guitar, sets it on fire and smashes it to pieces... Quite a first impression.

You know I am an old man I am 86 years old I was in the military and I saw entertainers I saw two guys do this back in the fifties play the guitar behind their heads to me this is not new although the people who did was never heard of to see Jimi Hendrix do this it was absolutely amazing he brought it to life what everybody could see it thank God that kind of talent exist

The Monterey Pop performance was probably one of his most famous, and it essentially broke him into the American market. He'd been making waves in England up until then. Once he hit Monterey, he's what EVERYONE was talking about back then. Everyone who saw that performance live just could NOT stop talking about it to everyone. The word of mouth on Hendrix just exploded like fireworks on the 4th of July. And he did all that with his guitar, the various tricks, playing wth his teeth and behind his back and such, but he did them with a right-handed guitar that he re-strung for a left-hander like himself. He was a once-in-a-lifetime artist that we'll never see again. He was instrumental in bringing the blues to the rock scene, and helping to make electric blues really popular. So many rock tunes are actually blues tunes.

Before Jimi Hendrix made it big he played a small club in London at an open mic night, he played “Hey Joe”. Eric Clapton was scheduled to play right after Jimi and refused to go on saying ‘what the F am I supposed to do after that?’. I saw Jimi play live at Devonshire Downs in 1968, simply awesome.

Monterey Pop festival was Jimi's coming out party. It's where the world (and US) got to know Jimi live. His 'tricks' with the guitar are on display. So much can be said about Jimi Hendrix but here, I'll say that Jimi's stage act was sexual in his initial phase. Later, he dropped a lot of that and focused more on playing the guitar with all the innovation that Jimi brought to the guitar. Jimi was a great songwriter in addition to being a great guitarist and guitar innovator. We lost him waaaay too soon.

You picked right up on Jimi's beautiful, musical soul then, and what he intended with his music for sure, when you were totally stumped for a long minute looking for words, had so much to get out you wanted to say about it, but just couldn't find the words. That's exactly what comes through with Jimi's guitar playing, it just cannot be described in words at all, because what you are listening to is his creative soul expressed through his guitar, as Jimi himself already knew. If you could find the exact right words to describe how he made you feel when he plays songs like that then it just wouldn't be Jimi you were listening to... Many thanks!

jimi is THE MAN!!!! PERIOD. ok. gonna babble a bit here. for my money his/their appearance at Monterey is one of the most epic performances in the history of Rock n Roll. consider this. jimi spend years backing all sorts of people (isley Brothers, Little Rickard etc) on the 'Chitlin' curcuit' even had his own band. never got too far until Chas Chandler (bassist for the Animals)...was turned onto jimi by a mutual friend (linda Keith) in nyc. Chas saw it, brought jimi to england,, foudn the guys to put together the J.H. Experience (mitch and noel) and got things going. They would appear in clubs around england and ALL the rock 'royalty' would come see him play...and were all FLOORED. The BEatles, the Stones, Clapton, Townshend, Jeff beck....they were all so blown away that many wondered what their next career was going to be. anyway...so..he was still basically unknown in america. when the Monterey festival was being put together (it was the first multi-day rock festival ever) someone suggested Hendrix be included. The promoter said yes..the rest is history. So the legend goes that everyone was earing this super potent Owsley Acid....and jimi supposedly took twice as much as everyone else, went out there and KILLED. none of these people had seen nor heard anything like this. I would recommend checking out his whole set from Monterey (my favorite is his take on 'like a rolling stone' from that show. just incredible. he's one of those people where, the guitar doesn't appear to be a separate instrument...rather just an extension of himself

He lived in his guitar! He was first, the only one at that time that could do this. Stevie was next and also great. Jimi shined like the brightest star but left us to soon. It was a sad day for sure. He is still loved. RIP JIMI

What is amazing is what we still have. Put on for example "What`d I say" by Ray Charles and he is immediately in the room, big as life, alive and kicking. Oh what joy.

Jimi was one of the leaders in changing rock and roll. He was the first artist to use the wawa pedal. It was a shame that his drug use took him from us so soon. You should check out his songs purple haze and all along the watch tower.
