A Flight on Allegiant Air...is it REALLY that bad?

Part 2 of 4 on my way to NYC saw me fly aboard Allegiant Air once again! It had certainly been some time since I was on my personal favorite US ULCC, and Allegiant did not disappoint. For what it is and if you go into the flight knowing what it'll be like, the experience can actually be pretty nice...especially so when you get a whole row to yourself :D Allegiant is a bit different from every other low cost airline in America as they only sell point to point routes and make it impossible to connect anywhere. They don't have hubs, rather focus cities where more point to point routes occur from...mainly in the south and popular hotspots like their home base of Las Vegas. It's an airline that's had some major problems in the past and are trying to repair that - I think they're succeeding, but just one man's opinion. Hope you guys enjoy!

I'm a flight attendant with Allegiant Air and most of us really love our customers and really want everything to go nicely for our guests. I ADORE my job.

The flight crew was very nice when I flew with you guys. That being said we waited 2 extra days in Phoenix while they tried to find a replacement plane when ours broke down. So we were just glad to even have a flight crew at all. You all could have physically abused all the passengers and we would still have been happy to even be going home. That being said this was quite a few years ago. I would probably give it another try

Well...I wish that was the case. Going to MO..the crew was rude and the plane was a mess. Flying back to FL...they held up the flight because they said we were already on the plane...when we clearly were not. Then one of the attendants decided to belittle us once we were finally seated. Crappy service going to and from with different crews doesn't really back your claim.

@@jenntip Okay. How many times did you fly Allegiant? Did you fly one round trip? Because one or even two round trips don't paint a big picture. I'm sorry the crew was rude and unhelpful. Just like in any industry we have bad apples. My whole crew just got a positive commendation from a passenger a week ago. My base actually has the highest number of positive survey feedbacks. I hope you got their name and filled out your post flight survey. Our company does take those seriously. It's important you let them know otherwise nothing will change.

@@justintime5021 That definitely happens. Our structure doesn't allow for major delays and other issues. We're not hub-and-spoke and we don't have the amount of planes needed to just switch tails. Our company is working on the problem. I'm sorry you experienced that. I've been through plenty of lengthy delays and we do our best to try to get people through it the best we can.

I fly Allegiant at least 3x a year. I can't recall ever being more than 20 minutes late. Very happy with them.

When I worked at SRQ for Allegiant, I spent 4 months loading, cleaning, catering, and pushing back N291NV everyday. Interesting to see it in this video!

As a fearful flyer, I prefer driving over flying any day but I can’t drive to my destination this time. I booked with Allegiant after some very positive reviews. Also the ticket price was amazing! I thank you so much for this review. It has helped put my mind at ease. 😊

Last February I flew Allegiant from Peoria IL to Orlando/Sanford to move to Florida, and for the first time ever, I had my cat with me. The flight was a full one, and when I asked at the ticket counter if there were any rows with empty seats, they said there was one empty seat on the plane, and was in the last row. They let me have that row, so had me on the window, my wife on the aisle, and an empty seat between us, allowing us to put the cat carrier below the seat in front of us much easier, and allowing us normal legroom. I felt this was good customer service on the part of Allegiant, and I have always found their flight crews to be very helpful.

It's like you say in the video, know what to expect and all will be fine. Flying ULCC is like taking the bus, it's just about getting from A to B, no frills. Sometimes that is exactly what I need/want.

i flew to sanford last year on allegiant, i had very low expectations since it was a ULCC, however the staff were super friendly and the flight itself wasn’t bad at all, i wouldn’t mind flying them again and would pick them over spirit and frontier any day

I have never had a problem with the direct TUL- > sanford. Have flown allegiant 35+ times and never had any issues.

The biggest problem with Allegiant is that they have almost no support if a flight gets canceled. Because Allegiant both only fly on select days and don't have connections, it results in a canceled flight leaving passengers stranded for an indefinite amount of time. No other ULCC does this. Even though Frontier and Spirit may only fly on certain days, they still offer layovers so they can work it out more easily. Allegiant does not. The result is that Allegiant completely screws passengers in the event of a cancellation. Case in point I took an Allegiant flight two weeks ago and it got canceled. It was going to be another FOUR DAYS before they could fly me to where I needed to be. I had to book a last minute flight on SWA. Even though Allegiant did refund my return ticket, it was only good for half of what I paid to fly on SWA. To me this makes Allegiant a non option. I can't book on an airline with a fragile route schedule and even more fragile reputation when it comes to maintenance and reliability. and then pray Southwest can bail me out if something goes wrong. Also consider that Allegiant markets to passengers on a budget, meaning not everyone has the resources to burn $300 on last minute flight if Allegiant cancels. While I think Allegiant offers a better hard product than Frontier, and in most cases Spirit, the sheer lack of support makes this airline truly the worst in the US.

This happened to us. The day before we departed, we were informed our return flight the following week was cancelled. They gave us a credit for the cancelled segment. Ridiculously, they actually charge a fee to apply that balance to a future flight. We're done with Allegiant.

Agreed, happened to my mom flying into West Palm Beach. It was only a twice a week flight from her home airport... she was ob hold for 3+ hours to get a flight two days later from Fort Lauderdale.

AND!!!! If you're stuck in Sanford, FL - there are NO OTHER AIRLINES to rebook you. You have to make the 50 minute drive to MCO airport and hope for a REAL carrier. They stranded me the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Horrible time to be stuck. They couldn't find another flight until TUESDAY! Cost me $300 to get back to work on time. I'll pay the extra money for a real airline. But - if your flight DOESN'T get cancelled, you'll be fine. Flight crew were very nice and the plane was clean. :/

It's not fair to compare a ULC airlines to swa. Also you can book directly with swa and pay the premium knowing you will have more protection.you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I flew Allegiant once round trip from Allentown, PA to Myrtle beach, SC. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had never flew a budget airline but overall I was pleased. Yes, the tray tables are small but fortunate for me, I didn’t need it. I had plenty of legroom. I had heard that Allegiant doesn’t offer FREE beverages and snacks so I purchased a water and a bag of chips at the airport prior to boarding. The flight attendants were friendly. I just wish that Allegiant flew round trip Allentown to Myrtle beach year round but unfortunately that route is a seasonal route. I am a frequent flyer and I hope to fly Allegiant again as they are cheaper than American Airlines which is the airlines I usually fly

Just flew with Allegiant a few days ago…the cabin crew was extremely friendly, and I got to fly on there newer A320s with winglets. For my first time flying with them I was extremely impressed with Allegiant. I even got to sit in the cockpit after landing and watch the Captain and FO do the full aircraft shutdown flows and checklist. Very very cool 😎

As a frequent flier, when I’m not flying overseas I usually fly allegiant and yeah of course it’s a low-cost airline so it’s not great but on the other hand the staff is always nice decent selection of food and gets me where I need to go for cheap. So yes I recommend allegiant air if you’re trying to fly inside of the United States

I frequently fly from Wichita, KS to Las Vegas, NV on Allegiant and it's the best flight ever. We always leave and arrive on time. A little over two hours nonstop and half the price of the other major airlines and I'm there. I brought my own bottled water and a packet of crackers and didn't miss the wi-fi at all. I highly recommend them.

The only time I flew Allegiant was this past January from South Bend down to Orland...I mean Sanford. It was a perfectly fine flight, and even with bags and exit row seats it still came out cheaper than DL/AA/UA flights with a layover. Since the flight was delayed due to weather, they gave out cans of pop at the gate that we could also take onboard. The FA gave me a cup of ice for free for the pop that I brought on board, and somehow my card was never charged for the snacks I purchased on board, so I guess I essentially got the experience of a typical full-service carrier lol One thing I noticed with Allegiant is that the aisles are super wide! Likely because their seats, despite being A320s, are only 17 inches wide instead of the usual 18 inches, so that extra room makes it easier to go up and down the aisle with others walking in the cabin.

I had a very bad experience with allegiant. Everything started fine, we got onto the plane just like normal. Then after some time of sitting there they said there was something wrong with the plane, so they had a mechanic come to fix it. We were sitting for about an hour and then they told us to go back to the terminal. We waited in the airport for another 2 hours and they told us that the airplane couldn't fly. They said there was another plane coming from las Vegas that could pick us up. Then that plane also broke down so we had to wait another 8 hours before we got out of there. The cabin crew and Captain were very nice, just the company is bad.

ULCCs are exactly what they advertise. No frills low cost. The issues are with the passengers who think it’s going to be a champagne experience. It’s basically a bus with wings. If you want comfort and service, you gotta spend the money.

allegiant looks cute, really cheap and easy. the staff also seem really great. unfortunately since i live in puerto vallarta, they’re not really an option but i’ll keep them in mind if i ever find myself in the states again. thanks for an entertaining video :)

I would never put myself in a position where I could get stranded if they cancel the flight. That's one reason why I fly Southwest. They have a strong route network to back you up, and their prices are really comparable when you consider they have no baggage or change fees, comfortable seats, full size tray tables, free snacks.

Southwest fares are much, much higher. Even with bag fees and "extras" on Allegiant, their prices are still lower. You think your bag and cup of coke is free. It's not. If you split everything down by cost, that coke is $14.00

The cheapest flights on SWA are 60 dollars but round trip flights average between 150 to 250 dollars.

Allegiant is number one on my DO NOT FLY list after they cancelled our flight home from Sanford to Portsmouth NH at the last minute and left us stranded in the Sanford airport. The next flight to Portsmouth was in three days. I understand flights get cancelled, but Allegiant employees were of no help to us whatsoever. After waiting in a long line at their ticket counter I was handed a slip of paper with an 800 number to call for assistance. The Sanford airport is in the middle of nowhere, so there are limited services such as lodging, dining, and ground transportation. The rental car agency would not allow us to drop a car at MCO to make connections there. Fortunately we had a relative in Orlando that was able to drive us to MCO where we stayed in a hotel to catch a Southwest flight the next morning to Manchester NH. Allegiant refunded our return airfare, but we incurred well over $1,000 in additional expenses for a last minute flight on Southwest, rental car at MHT to retrieve our vehicle that was parked in Portsmouth, meals, and lodging at MCO. Never again. From now on we will only fly Southwest to MCO. At least if the trip is cancelled they have a large network to fall back on.

Sun Country is another ULCC. However, they offer freak drinks and the seats look decently comfortable. I wouldn't mind flying Sun Country in the future.

Good video. I’ve never flown them, but in all honesty, that flight looked fine. Small tray table aside, the plane looked clean, the crew professional and friendly, and you got to where you wanted to go. Sure, first class lie flats are great, but many people have gotten spoiled with wanting seat screens, WiFi, and any given inflight entertainment. No music? Bring some headphones and portable music. Bored? Bring a book, a crossword puzzle, or if you are traveling with someone…a deck of cards. Or you can just look out the window and enjoy the view.

I fly Allegiant because they offer the only direct flights from my home airport (ABE) to Florida. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones in that I’ve never had an issue with them, given their lack of phone support and limited schedule. Fortunately they fly between ABE and PIE 5-6 days a week now, so if a flight were to be canceled, I would probably only be stuck a day or two. That being said, in November 2011, while en route to ABE in my rental car (I was still living in Florida at the time), I was involved in a minor accident. I was stopped at a red light and got sideswiped by someone who came out of their lane, so they were at fault. I didn’t call police because that may have caused me to miss my flight and then I’d be stuck in Allentown another 3 days since they only flew Monday and Friday and I had already checked out of my hotel.

I find the allegiant seat pretty comfortable for 2022 standards. The no recline option is a plus for me, no fights break out and no one can steal my space. Seems to be padded or formed better than most seats

It seems to me that this is a brilliant solution to those flying on a budget. Is it perfect? No, but you get what you pay for and it's worth every penny from what I've seen!

IND is my favorite airport due to how perfectly laid out it is, it’s super easy to get to your gate, and the overall architecture is stunning. Awesome video! I fly Allegiant from the Lehigh Valley airport to Punta Gorda Florida 4 times a year and I absolutely love the Allegiant Air. I have never had an issue except for one time I had a gentleman who decided he was going to sit in my seat in which I paid for which was a window seat which more leg room and when I questioned the stewardess she made the gentleman get-up-and-get out and go to his own seat that he did not pay for that so I did appreciate that they could have just said we'll find another seat but they didn't. I truly like flying with Allegiant and would love to have to have Allegiant come and contract with the Reading airport in Reading Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania it would be wonderful for everyone who would like to use that airport. At this point if you want to use that airport they're offering you 2 trips a week down to Orlando Florida through Southwest however you have to go through boscov's department store their travel center in order to do so. So Allegiant Air if you're out there and you read this please please come to Reading Pennsylvania airport ✈️ !!!

After three years I flew Allegiant to LAX. They had changed the entire setup and now Allegiant is so far away you have to take a shuttle to get there, then walk to the end of the concourse. I’ll be flying into Burbank from now on. Just ridiculous.

There are three ULCCs now but will be down to two when JetBlue closes its acquisition of Spirit (unless Avelo does really well for which there’ll still be three).

Also, there is Sun Country (SY) that is a ULCC carrier. Right now, they fly to over 80 destinations using 55 Boeing aircraft (including cargo). According to an article in January 2022, the CEO says they're planning to add 6 to 8 planes yearly, starting in 2023.

@@benjigans1419 Allegiant is an ultra low cost carrier so you do have to pay for every little thing like how many bags you have and how big they are and food and even where you sit in the cabin. but the U.S. big three are way better, but Allegiant does have a cool livery and you save lots more money, like paying $150 instead of $300 on the big three.

Those seatback trays make my nerves tingle (they should be obliterated). Hence, I give the hotel a less than satisfactory rating for that. Moreover, great overview (coverage)and highlights as always Chris and con't the great work.

I flew allegiant for the first time today from DSM to SNA, flight attendants were nice, service was great but the seats are so small, I'm 6,2 and in a window seat I was unable to move my legs from a crossed position.

I have flown a few times on Allegiant. Every single time, the plane was 4 hours late due to some different issues including one time they simply misplaced the maintenance log and couldn't find it. I understand shit happens but when shit happens literally every time I try to fly them, fuck it, not flying them anymore. I will gladly pay more for an airlines I know isn't going to get me in over 4 hours late. Edit: Also, they had 0 staff at Midway in Chicago. Not even joking. We stood in line for 30 minutes waiting for an employee to show up to check our bags and another airline's employee came and did it. The first time I saw an Allegiant employee was once the plane arrived 4 hours late.

I flew a 2 hour flight from Oregon to Arizona on Allegiant. I’m 6’3” so I bought an aisle ticket, but it was still the most cramped I’ve ever been on a flight by a mile. There wasn’t even a pocket to put my small belongings in. Probably wouldn’t be that bad for someone of average height. But it was an absolutely miserable flight for me.

I fly allegiant all the time from cinti to st pete and I love there flights never a problem with any flights or the staff.only thing I could possibly say bad about the whole thing is I am hearing impaired and it usually takes a good 15 mins to depart and when they give there little induction to the safety rules they literally go thru it so fast like under 2mins that you can't understand a word they say.for that I give them a thumbs down otherwise I enjoy my flights. I have had the pleasure of having a nice experience with some attendants that will point out certain things departing or landing.i have also seen utube videos of attendants having a great time making fun of the flight rules just to be more enjoyable which is great would love to see more of that on flights.

I've flown with them a few times in the last month, (I'm a pilot so my experience may differ than regular passengers) but they seem like a hybrid between a LCC and ULCC. They offer pop, no snacks (but UA and AA don't seem to these days either)

Alegiant was great the couple times I flew it but the first time I rode alegiant it had a 6 hour delay for no reason and my grandparents also have had experience with that

Indy built an entire new airport terminal like 5-10 years ago which I heard looks really nice compared to their old terminal which I heard was trash and was a focus city for U.S. Airways

I fly allegiant a couple times a year to visit mah mom in Fla. I have seen the plane pretty dingy before, but usually its not to bad. No matter, its really the only way I can afford to go so often. So Id fly even if i had to sit on a rag rug for 2 hours, its better then driving 1300 miles. last time we drove, a transmission line came loose on a sunday morning, no help available till monday.... ,Used 9 gallons of trans fluid to get home from Atlanta to Chicago area. White knuckle Panic, hyper alert for the low fluid sound all the way. Terrified I was gonna kill my cars transmission and it would cost $5000 to replace... Ill fly from now on!

Couldn't agree more about those useless 320 trays... Allegiant is actually my favorite US airline simply because their aircraft sport the most welcoming livery of any USA based carrier............ well, PLUS- they've been consistently dependable AND on time for me (don't know if it's karma or luck or what but I've had nary an issue- yet).; PLUS- In the year 2023, I can get a 2 hour ride to Florida from Allegiant for almost less than I'd pay the local grocery store for a couple 12 packs of Coca Cola.; PLUS- The staff is generally friendly and accommodating (within reason).; PLUS- and best of all, they fly from PIT and LCK to SRQ and PGD and it just so happens that my two actual destinations are both smack dab in the middle of those 4 airfields, both in the north and in the south... and then, in Florida, there's always flights to nearby PIE as a backup 5th field. So other than having my own personal jet transport from my local airfields, Allegiant couldn't be more convenient to my recurrent travel, giving me tons of options in both getting a good initial deal, and in case of cancellation on that initial flight..... Having travelled 70+ flight cycles with Allegiant, and keeping in mind this airline is akin to a taxicab rather than a limousine, I couldn't go with anything but an A+ personal experience rating...

@Chris Jazz i flew allegiant again this year. not bad but the tray tables should be bigger. especially so people can do word searches or sudokus.

Hi, You could always, file a complaint of " My Place Hotel", to the Better Business Bureau, for false advertising. But they'll claim a lack of staff from, Covid. But they should have paid for an Uber, for you. All the best Shaun of NYC ( JFK )

Id prefer United, but they’re a bigger airline. Allegiant is an amazing budget airline. I’ve flown them out of ABE and was not disappointed. However the tray tables are quite small.

Allegiant is the only direct flight to Sanford/Orlando and its significantly cheaper as well. I always pick my seating and enjoy paying only for a what I want. People travel with far too much crap usually LoL.

Are there U.S. carriers that forbid filming on board aircraft or just individual flight crews who sometimes try to stop it? That seems like a harmless activity. Why would a flight attendant try to stop someone from filming on board?

There’s no federal laws that forbids you for recording. I’ve been to flights and recorded my trips on the plane. I’ve seen few passengers recording when I’m working the flight (I’m a fa) so for me it doesn’t bother me at all. Probably depends on the FA some might not like it

I'm an FA for Spirit. We don't have a "No Filming" policy on our flights so we can't tell you to shut it down. Personally I love watching Airline Trip Report videos and can't wait to recognize a KZfaqr on board. However it does make some of the crew feel uncomfortable. We don't have a "break room" on our planes, heck we don't even have big galleys to retreat to so we don't any personal space to unwind, read a book or chit chat with your fellow crew. Being filmed by random people even if its for "good press" later as you liked your Allegiant flight is kind of like a minor invasion of what little privacy we already have on board. There's also crew members that don't want their faces to be shown online in a video and we can't trust what you are/aren't going to record in a video so it does make crew uneasy sometimes. Maybe crew doesn't want it publicly known online where they work too for safety/privacy reasons. Not every crew member is on social media in unform. Unlike a restaurant server, a bank teller, check in agent at a hotel where your interaction is only minutes, we have to be "ON" for sometimes 3-5 hour flights in a cramped cabin. Nowadays where anyone can whip out their phone to record their displeasure or catch someone "in the act" it can add tention to an interaction. Again I still love watching aviation trip reports, keep up the good work! I'm just not a fan of recording crew members. We are safety/service providers first, not PR for the airline.

Several years ago 60 minutes did an expose on Allegiant’s Air safety record which was pretty scary stuff. Nonetheless, still a great video especially the music and the “night shots!” Love your content always!

They started with ValuJet's former CEO and did that same model of buying older, cheaper planes and thus maintenance problems. After his departure they've made their fleet younger with newer pre-owned and some new Airbus orders. This has made them a safer airline.

Things have changed by leaps and bounds since that 60 Minutes report. We actually watch that report and it's talked about. We don't ever want to be in that position again.
