Hands down, the best pipes in the business. Ella was THE queen, and Sarah Vaughn was co-Queen. I saw her 5x LIVE. First time was in 81/82 at Dangerfields in NYC. My friend and I were S.V. freaks. We "splurged" and spent $35ea. We both got dressed to the nines. We were seated way in the back right next to the swinging kitchen door. We thought, "Oh well. No matter. We are HERE". Seconds before the lights went down for her entrance (through the kitchen doors) the maitre'd swooped us up quickly and quietly the THE ringside table. A no-show? Cancellation? Don't know. But we were dressed up, and very cute. So in she swoops upon her entrance in a cloud of LAUREN perfume. That now being a strong scent memory. It was beyond thrilling. Through the 80s I saw her again at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and twice at The Blue Note in spring 1989. I read recently that during that engagement she was diagnosed with lung cancer. (I remember reading in The NY POST that she canceled her last 2 nights). So.... yes. I saw/heard her WITH lung cancer. Ummm, she sounded fantastic. She died a year later. I once met the great opera singer Rene Fleming who was a HUGE jazz singer fan, S.V. being her #1 favorite. She said Vaughn had the capability to have been an opera singer but had zero interest in all that work! The life of a jazz singer being an easier one, and permitted her to indulge in the things she liked to indulge in. Her stupendous voice will live on forever.

Of the unchallenged Trinity of American Jazz Singers (Billie, Ella, Sarah), none were more creative, inventive, daring, commanding than Sarah, whose roots were not in the '30s like the other 2 but in the laboratory of modern jazz that was the Billy Eckstine Band. No one had greater command of pitch and voice projection, but it was her ability to improvise new melodies on the familiar words and chords of the song that defined her uniqueness. On this date, she lags behind the beat and turns the songs on their heads rhythmically. Only one controversial quality of Sarah distances some fans and musicians---her experimental use of vibrato, which some singers dispense with entirely. Sarah overdid it on her Gershwin album, but elsewhere it contributes to the life of her performances. Her career ended with a different, incomparable pianist named Frank Collett (look for her '80s recordings, esp. 'In the City of Lights."

Super voice and accompaniment Karl Schroeder trio. May God bless ....
Arrangements for the Gershwin classics are by the immortal Marty Paich and, obviously, for the Michel Legrand compositions, Legrand himself is responsible (as per the incredible album they made together). Pianist is the immaculate Carl Schroeder and on drums is none other than the truly GREAT Jimmy Cobb (I'm not sure of the bassist's name...?).

Sarah's last pianist was not Frank Collett although she worked with Frank often and he was marvelous. George her final pianist was an Emmy award winner. Andy Simpkins and Harold Jones was her drummer. Sarah had hired Monty Budwig to be her bassist but she passed away before that final trio could work with her. I know this because Monty, George and Harold were working a club when her manager gave us the news. I was sobbing about the news at the club where the guys were playing and Monty's wife Arlette were at that club. Sarah was the greatest singer I ever heard. I loved Sandi Patty gospel.
