I came across him literally at the lights when I was waiting in my car in East Ham . I recognised him and he laughed when he realised I recognised him . He seemed to exude joy

RIP Benjamin. Conscious Rasta, poet, musician and freedom fighter. We've lost three rebels in a very short space of time. Sinèad O Conner, Shane Macgowan and now Benjamin Zephaniah. All aged 65 (6 +5 =11 which is the ultimate angel number) and all angels on earth in their own different ways, but all rebels at heart. Safe upwards journey brother. 🙏🏼 🇪🇹 🙏🏼

I remember he came to my primary school when I was a kid and gave his book out to my older sister which I stole and then I saw him live when I was doing GCSE English. There was such a motion and rhythm and a brilliant sense of humour to his poetry and he was a lovely, humble, hilarious guy. Definitely inspired my love for poetry and reggae/ska music from an early age. R.I.P Benjamin. ❤

We worked at Benjamin's House last year and we became friends and stayed in regular contact with him. We was blown away by his kindness, time and love that he gave us and we respected him and treated him as any other customer, I think he really appreciated that we wasn't trying to impress him or anything. He told us some amazing stories that we will always cherish and remember him for. Such sad news that we was dreading 😢😢😢

Sorry to read this news. I met him when I was 9 or 10 and he hooked me on poetry and rhyming. I concidered him as one of my teachers in rhyming and definitely he is one the teachers of lowkey the rapper and activists and Akaala another brilliant poet, rapper, author and activist. One of he roots of UK BLACK MUSIC RIP.

What a shame Ross doesn't honour his guest - any guest - with the respect and courtesy that is deserved. He puts BZ on the spot {twice} by asking him to do something and then, when he obligingly does it, Ross is interrupting with 'witty' comments. To his credit, Benjamin Zephaniah rose above it graciously.

Thanks for sharing this. I've not seen it before. He was a great man. And I've got to say that Jonathan is a lovely host. He was definitely more brash when he was younger, as many of us are, but he's so polite and encouraging. And Beckett's "I've got a job to do 'ere!" gave me a good chuckle 😄

That apparent supernatural experience he said he had fascinates me. I'm always interested in hearing about experiences like that. I don't know for sure whether there is anything more than the natural world but it would be nice to believe there is and I keep an open mind about it. On a more secular point, I also have a huge respect for him refusing an OBE, that takes a lot of conviction to do that and he certainly lived out what he professed. RIP Benjamin Zephaniah.
