@holly-rosemckinneycondren8 ай бұрын
@thet1375 It is beautiful because even in a time of great grief his family were able to find a bit of joy on what is undoubtedly one of the hardest days they'll ever have to live through in Gods house and in music. Clearly none of the priests had any issues with it or else the music would not have been played. In my experience coming from a family of funeral directors, a character like Shane MacGowan was not meant for a drab funeral, but one full of madness and dancers just like he would have endorsed were he still with us. You can have your opinions of course, but to many that is considered the ideal way to be remembered. Love and light, that is what Catholicism is all about. All the best :)

I agree with you, it is a truly Irish tradition to celebrate someone’s life this way. It is a tradition that was opposed by Rome in the years following the famine, who then instructed the church leaders in Ireland to suppress it along with much of Irish tradition and culture, replacing it under the “devotional revolution”. It included suppressing Irish dancing, making it stiff and upright instead of its natural expression of joy. But thankfully we still have sean nós dancing, growing all the time, and Shane’s funeral showed our true Irish cultural traditions are still there to enjoy and show the world. The most important thing was a beautiful tribute to Shane, it honoured his great gift to the world. So why should anyone want to impugn that by imposing strictures purporting to be religious observance? @@holly-rosemckinneycondren

Still remember thinking 'wow' when I first heard Fairytale on Bruno Brookes Radio 1 countdown in 87. I owe a lot to this song. Thank you Shane and Kirsty ❤️🙏

This funeral is a milestone in the history of human beeing as well as in the history of music(ians) of "modern" (???) times. Well deserved - it's unbeatable masterclass to connect pain of loss to fun for millions. Thanks for you being always yourself in our artificial world! Have a nice flight, sir❤😢❤
