Physician here. When a physician makes frightening statements with implications for national healthcare based solely on 'personal opinion' and not on evidence, you should find another physician. We are now in the age of evidence-based medicine, including psychiatry. O'Keane, to her credit, states clearly there is no evidence that the 8th amendment has a negative impact on anyone's mental health.

Sad to see this. Ireland still has to fight about these certain issues, and once again, you can feel the poison of religion, seeping into even this human rights issue. Religion is always there, ready to tell you what to do, and what not to do. This goes way beyond this feeble "debate" we see here. Some parts of Ireland are still living in the 1800s, where a mindless mass with no brain suddenly has a "soul", and where the woman's life is secondary, to a mass of a brainless embryo. We humans are part of the animal kingdom. But unfortunately, after being brainwashed by several religions over thousands of years, we have grown arrogant. Now we actually believe that a human embryo is in anyway, more valuable than any other animal embryo. Who told us this? A religion did. You just ran with it, because it's a shortcut to thinking. It relieves you from the burden of independent thought. Just because we have attachment to something, does not increase the perceived value of anything. That is 100% relative, it's not factual at all. There has to be a facts based consensus of what is valuable, and what is not. Now we know, that embryo is an embryo is an embryo. There is 0% difference in value, between any animal embryos, including humans. So why do not people get riled up like this, when an female animal dies violently, while pregnant, for example? That is an abortion as well. Oh yes, i forgot, some people are religiously motivated, therefore highly biased, and unfit to make judgments of this kind. Their opinions and votes are welcomed, even if they are in the wrong here. That is how Democracy actually works. We have to bear the burden of religiously motivated, highly biased people, who are in the wrong. What happened to all the fairies, elves, gnomes, ghosts and goblins in Ireland, is now happening to the middle eastern religion called christianity, in Ireland. When a supposed god ordained religion is nearing its end, it goes into what is known as "death throes".
