Dave: This is an excellent edit and fulfills the request I mentioned in my comment last week regarding more complex masks on a bird image. As a bird photographer I really liked some of the new techniques you used in this edit using the TK9 plugin. I was also thinking that it would be possible to use some lens blur in the background using either the focus area button in TK9 or the new lens blur in the latest camera raw/lightroom. Thanks again...TK9 is becoming easier with each edit I watch you do.

Thanks. I did try the lens blur, which I originally wanted to use but I couldn't get a proper depth map. In the end I liked the Orton effect better. It softened the background and also darkened it at the same time.

I also have tried the focus area button before but haven't had much success with it. I liked your alternative method of selecting the subject and then adding to it with the object selection tool.

Ive tried the new lens blur in Lightroom on another image of mine that had more bokeh due to background being further away than this image and it worked wonders smoothing the background. I was really happy with using this new tool in Lightroom. I have just now tried this Lightroom tool on this raw image and it had trouble with selection as busy background. It is still in Early Access mode so im sure Adobe will improve this. I do love it so far as it makes my less expensive Sigma lens seem to be equal to the more expensive lenses.

@@tonynicolaci3244 I think LR is using the same process for creating a Depth Map as PS. When it works it's awesome. I'm glad Tony added this feature to TK9.

Hi Dave, these TK Fridays are AWESOME! I found them recently and they are one of the best channels for photo editing, if not the best because we have complete editing from start to finish view. I'd like to ask you if it will be possible for you to do a video on editing photos for printing. When we apply soft proof on Photoshop, especially, when printing on mate papers, all contrast is gone and sometimes colors get muted. As we start to bring back the contrast, using Curves, shadows start to get muddy, and colors sometimes get way too saturated and it can be truly a pain to bring back that detail we had before. I would love to see your editing process for printing, namely on mate papers. Thank you, and looking forward to the next Friday.... although I still have a lot of past Fridays to see :)

Thanks again Dave for using another one of my images and you did a great job on it. It is an honour. This photo was taken in my backyard and probably a little deceiving as I live in suburbia but Ive planted Australian native plants to attract the bird wildlife. Also thanks for pronouncing my name correctly. Perfect.

The processing video itself is, as always, a masterful display of the author's skills. However, the recording is not sharp, which makes it difficult to perceive and evaluate the effects. I don't think it was intentional. As always, the recipient, impatient with the next film, a photographer from Poland greets you from the city of "Przemyśl Fortress".
