The use of the gradient helped focus on the task at hand without the distraction of a picture, then when pictures were used it was easier to follow. I have enjoyed seeing your videos on TK8. They have been most helpful. I have just gotten myself into astro photography and frankly am a complete amateur at it, but it sure seems to me that TK8 could be used in any number of situations with the post processing of astro photography. If you are up to a challenge, you might want to find an astro photographer who has some photos to work with and do a video on that. They are going to be dealing with hue, saturation, exposure, etc. Seems to my simpleton mind that this is the type of stuff that TK8 might work with. There is nothing simple about astro photography photo processing. Anyway, just an idea for a challenge for you.

Dave to eliminate the banding in your sample gradient with latest update to PS go to > preferences then > technologies preferences then check > precise previews for 16 bit documents, then restart PS. The reason you see banding without changing technologies preferences is because adobe engineers have your layers in a temporary 8 bit mode to move along faster using layers. If you were to flatten all those temporary 8 bit layers, you would then have a 16bit file and see no banding.

Dave: Another great lesson. I hope you can help me out with a solution. I have an image where I want to superimpose a vertical gradient of white to black on a luminosity mask and paint through the selection so that the effect is maximum at the bottom and gradually vanishes at the top. For example the luminosity mask selects a bunch of bright birds in a pale background. I have inverted the mask so now the birds are black and the background is white. I want to darken the background from bottom to top gradually. How best can I do it? One not so clever way is to burn through the mask with different opacities and fill for the brush while burning starting with a higher value at the bottom and working my way to the top with a lower value in steps. Crude but works - I am sure you can tell me how to use a gradient to achieve this in a much cleverer way. Thanks in advance.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you are trying to do. If you are trying to darken the image thru a gradient you could add a Color Grading tool to a layer and darken it to taste. Then use Photoshop’s Gradient tool and apply a gradient to the Color Grading tool’s layer mask. Then put that layer in a group with a black mask. Load your selection and paint through the selection onto the black group mask. This may have nothing to do with what you are trying to do but it is just a guess.

Dave: I can follow along wonderfully with your videos; excellent presentations. However here is a video I wish you would make = what about mistakes and how to back track; especially if undo not available. For example do a TK8 mask either partway and go back (using undo or back out thru TK8) to start again. And do a TK8 mask applied with color adjust...do other stuff. Try to delete/undo as if to start a new mask to replace old etc. What seems to happen to me is TK8 and Ps layers get confused/lost and undo or delete does not work and I start over on a clean file. If you click the wrong operator (+, -, or x), you can just click the correct one and continue with your calculation. No need to undo anything. In fact, you can wait to choose your operator until right before you click the = button. So, choosing the wrong operator shouldn't be an issue. Just choose another one and continue. Choosing the wrong second mask is also not a problem. Just "X" out of the wrong one using the X button in the upper right of the mask-making interface to get back to the main interface and then go back to making the right mask. The calculator stays active and just waits until you find the right mask and click the = button to finish the calculation. If you make the wrong first mask then you should "X" out of the calculator entirely and start over. Once you click the calculator button, you are committed to using the mask that was present on-screen at the time you clicked it. So, if that first mask is the wrong one, you can't undo. You need to restart your calculation with a fresh mask.

Hello Dave! It's me again...I believe that finally I must have a bug or something! When trying to follow along I realize that I have to click the = button on the calculator twice to take effect! The first time it does nothing and shows the psd unchanged and with the 2nd click I get the right result! Do you think that I must uninstall TK and re-install it!? Is there any procedure for uninstalling it!? Thanks a lot againt! Ioannis

Sorry Lakis. It is such a great tool and I pretty much use it in all of my TK Friday Tutorials. Maybe watch some of the full edit tutorials and it might start to make sense.

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly I am OK with plus, minus, equal but I just don't understand what you mean with ×

@@lakislambrianides7619 The X is for intersect. For instance, you can have Photoshop select the Subject. Now you want to fill that Subject with, let’s say a Lights 1 Luminosity Mask. You could Select the Subject and Intersect it with a Lights 1 Luminosity Mask. Download my PDF notes on my Full Edit Tutorials and they will show you exactly what to do.

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly excuse my ignorance dear Dave does by any chance means applying eg lights 1 or a zone mask to that selection when u use the word intercept?

@@lakislambrianides7619 That is correct. I find Intersection to be one of the main reasons I use Intersection for.
