The difference between sinulog and dinagyang is the competition. Sinulog is just like performing street dancing while in dinagyang they're performing while telling a story. Btw nice videos looking forward to the next one

Steve was correct in his observation, Dinagyang is more centered on tribal performance whilst Sinulog is centered on the dancing queen. This is actually a historical symbolism. As you may know, Magellan came to Cebu converted the locals to Chirstianity & offered the image of the Sto. Nino to Rajah Humabon & his wife, who was later rechristened as Queen Juana. She was so taken with the image of the Sto. Nino that she danced with the image with so much passion, hence the reason why Sinulog performances as you saw almost always has a dancing queen holding the image of Sto. Nino. On a similar note, Magellan came to Cebu in 1521, so that means in 2 years time, 2021 will be the 500th anniversary since the arrival of Sto. Nino. Needless to say, it will be really special.

My first Dinagyang was more than a decade ago. My first sinulog was 20 years ago. Although both the Sinulog and Dinagyang celebrate the Sto. Nino (Infant Jesus), each has its own unique vibe that is difficult to explain - and yes, both festival are mind blowing. Glad that you four enjoyed both festivals.

Guys dinagyang is not only one day celebration and competition, it's a 3 days tribes competition, Friday tambor trumpa Saturday kasadyahan festival a regional competition it showcase festivals in other cities and places in the region then Sunday dinagyang festival tribe contest,and majority of us ilonggo don't watch it live during the dinagyang tribes competition, it's hard to watch it in 5 judging areas police officers sometimes are strict and limitted area ,except if we buy tickets , it's more comfortable if we watch it on TV , then in the afternoon upto midnight we go to the streets and make sadsad or merrymaking some are dancing especially where the sound system is..many are enjoying eating inasal at food festivals, dringking liquor etc.its between 2pm upto 12 midnight...last year base on crowd estimates by oder govt agencies,media etc people making sadsad or merrymaking 3 days Friday Saturday and Sunday afternoon 2pm-12 midnight it's more than 2 million people sorry for my English haha

Sinulog is more of honoring the Christianity brought upon the island, where as Dinagyang depicts the story of tribal groups being converted into Christians. Also people are more touchy in Sinulog 🤗, Dinagyang is a showcase of ASSets 😱 and as much as I hate comparing them I’ve always enjoyed Dinagyang more just because I grew up watching it and seen how the dances evolved to what they have became now. Kudos to the indigenous tribe of Miro!

Hi guys,FYI. The bola bola tribe (which Lucy mentioned as an 8 time champion)...They were champion for 8 years, the years they championed and the costume they wore were on that "blocking board" (if i may call it that way). They hold the most championship in Dinagyang history. These were students before,now they are working professionals and businessmens. They're not there to compete but to take part on this year's dinagyang. Glad you enjoyed your dinagyang experience. 👍

Now i appreciate it and amazed how how totally different it is and I hope to witness it personally in the future. And it’s good that they stage it a week after Sinulog, unlike the Ati-Atihan in Aklan which is the same schedule with Sinulog!

Omg I'm teary eyed. I Am So Glad they Feature these Original Aeta Tribes from Nagpana, Barotac Viejo. The Festival is for them...they were the True Black Ancestors that Originally owned that Island. The rest of those participants are merely fake painted. Please don't forget to visit their tribe in Nagpana and some other areas, missionaries put them in one town and took care of them. Some live and beg in the streets. They own that Island but they're the most unheared people of the Philippines.

"The current Ati population of Iloilo is not involved with any of the tribes nor are they involved in the festival in any other way although recently the original Atis from the hinterlands of Panay specifically from the mountains of Barotac Nuevo and Anilao came to participate non-competitively for recognition and giving them importance as being the characters symbolically portrayed in the festival."

NCIP is actually the govt agency that takes care of the aetas..they educate them and give them jobs..used to work below them in one building...their challenge i think is becoz of their nomadic nature, they tend to leave the program..only a few was succesful and able to make it...

Cool but I don't think that is the way how to describe the rest as "fake" painted when it's naturally obvious. The festival is in fact to look back at the past and in honoring our ancestors and them the atis thus explains the black painted bodies. 😉

So proud to be ilonggo from Iloilo 😁😁😁..anyways FYI, every dance tells a story,....a history of iloilo before the Spaniards came to conquer and civilized the people of Iloilo....the original race of Filipino looks exactly like that, they were called aetas,....but as time progresses the civilization changed, education and religion was introduced,and people as well changed, due to interracial marriages
@kenw.5166
@kenw.5166 5 жыл бұрын
? this festival originated in the 70's and was derived from the the Ati-Atihan festival where the aetas were starving and came out of their mountain village to ask the malays for help. In thanks they danced. Filipinos today especially visayans from Panay island were originally refugees from a city state called Panai in Malaysia and were part of the Srivijayan kingdom, much of filipino culture originated from them. They were driven out by the Chola empire from Southern India (which is why we call indians bhumbay). Honestly I think the malay filipinos didn't just "buy" the island from the aetas we displaced and fucked them up through war. It's kinda hypocritical IloIlo celebrates them ... but whatever it attracts tourists.

@@trentdiaz8197 you need to relearn Philippine history. That theory has been debunked. The first group were the Aetas, then the Austronesians came. They mixed, but obviously there were a lot more Austronesians, so most Filipinos look more Austronesian. But we still have Aeta blood, this has been proven by DNA

Saw you from afar yesterday. You and your friends look in awe and was very overwhelmed. I was so happy to see foreigners enjoying our culture. I was actually teary-eyed to saw you guys taking videos with full smile yesterday. :D I thought you were just spectators just until I saw your vlog here. I said, "Ohhh..These people were those who were sitting in front yesterday!" Yay!

The difference between Sinulog, Dinagyang and Ati-atihan: Sinulog is more on trumpet, more focused on modern (16th. century) yet grandiose vests, using canvass usually florals to have good visual effects; Dinagyang is more on drums, high energy performance and choreography, ethic costumes and music; Ati-atihan is more on lyre, street dancing called sadsad, ingenuity of materials and you can join them in dancing.. All unique in its own way in honor to Sto. Niño.

You have to see also the “musicians” behind those performances. Those drummers etc, etc, they’re so graceful too behind the scene and its just so amazing how they’re hitting those drums so fast! Literally fast! Its really fun watching them.😊

Sinulog is actually more on the religious aspect because it is in honor of Snr. Sto Nino or the Child Jesus and the first arrival of Christianity here in the Philippines and how the natives embraced it. Whilst, Dinagyang Festival, although it also celebrates Snr. Sto Nino, it is more on the tribal side, to celebrate the arrival of Malay settlers(one of our ancestors) in Panay, Ilo-ilo and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Aboriginal people (Aeta's).
