Maybe you've heard of Yu-Gi-Oh's "Season 0" anime. But did you know that Yu-Gi-Oh! also had a "Season 0" card game? Today, we take a look at the (very) short history of Bandai's Yu-Gi-Oh Card Game.

3:53 The "M and W" actually stands for "Magic and Wizards" rather than "Monsters and Wizards". Even more reason for the name to change to "Duel Monsters" later as "Magic and Wizards" is redundant. It also is a rather on the nose parody name for "Magic the Gathering" made by "Wizards of the Coast".
@CatsRul85

I think that's the main reason it would have gotten changed is because there's already Magic the Gathering (like having to change Magic cards to Spell cards )

@@CatsRul85 I mean, it was called Magic and Wizards because it was a not-so-subtle parody of Magic the Gathering(made by Wizards of the Coasts) because in the early days of the manga each chapter focused on a parody of real 90's fads that happened/was happening in Japan, each with their own unique villain.

I love that Exodia in your deck means you win. I never thought about the fact that you had to draw all cards and play one card every turn, so if you fill your deck with monsters, you can never have less than 5 cards in your hand and end the duel once you drew Exodia. Truly pay to win.
@LonelySpaceDetective
@LonelySpaceDetective 5 ай бұрын
It's actually even funnier than that. The rules never specify a limit on how many duplicates of a card you're allowed to have, so you in theory could have a deck with nothing _but_ Exodia cards.

@juliamavroidi8601 Жыл бұрын
i think it was intended that you split your cards evenly with your opponent, kinda like those Top Trumps car/horse decks. That way even if you had all of Exodia, it would be up to chance whether all parts would end up in your deck.

I believe I may have figured out the rules a bit more. You both play the cards at the same time like war and not like most TCG's, each monster only has one attack and if they "crash" and don't get get destroyed, they are sort of left to the side and can be destroyed by the "ultimate" dragon and even reused by Tea's character card. to avoid not having monsters to play, you have to play low amount of spell and use Yugi to draw 3 cards.(Still not a single rule for "bricking" on spells)

I miss the early Yu-Gi-Oh as well. I thought the manga was written so much better than the anime adaptation as well. The anime doesn’t realize that Bakura is a main villain for a long time, and they use him like a side character who pops up and does spoooooky things…. Meanwhile, if you read the manga, you get given bits and pieces of Bakura doing evil things behind the scenes. He shows up constantly and manipulates things from the shadows. The final game he plays with Yugi is amazing as well. It feel disconnected and out of nowhere if you only watch the anime, but it’s a perfect parallel to his first introduction in the series where he plays an RPG with Yugi and his friends. I think the manga even references that this game will be similar to their first, and that game never happened in the anime. Plus original Dark Yugi was a badass, and there was proper character development given to him to make him a mysterious character. The scene with Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom versus Dark Yugi also makes a lot more sense. There really wasn’t any reason for little Yugi to be afraid of the Dark Yugi in the anime version, but the audience has seen what Dark Yugi has done to people in the manga so it hits us harder as well.
@dsproductions19
@dsproductions19 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I really liked the Season 0 anime. It really helped show that Yugi was the "King of Games" as opposed to just a decent duelist. And all the crazy games and punishments were entertaining, too.
@turtek12
@turtek12 8 ай бұрын
I kind of want to see the Season 0 plot reimagined in the mainline anime (season 1 and later) style. The flashback in season 1 to the "mugger" that Atem mind-crushed kind of hinted at that, and it would have been interesting to see the original idea expressed in Takahashi's later style.

Ah, an exploration of the games that started it all- and the insane anime that slowly morphed into a slightly-less insane anime! Thank you for exploring this, Jwittz!

Great video! I'm a Yu-gi-oh fan, but I didn't know about that card game! Also, nice homage to Kazuki Takahashi. RIP

Konami recently printed an anniversary Dark Magician card that features artwork similar to the original Bandai Dark Magician, but with modern Konami colouring, and it's simply incredible.

I for one would love to see more tabletop content on the channel in general you always make them so entertaining when they could be boring. Pokémon Master videos are some of my favorites on the channel.
