I was an 80s kid that grew up in the rural Midwest and I was shocked at how accurately the environment was portrayed: everything in that world was a hand-me-down and/or held together with duct tape, rusted cars in overgrown yards. Trailers and duplexes that needed repairs, but there was no money to repair anything, so you just lived with broken things instead. Unsupervised kids just kind of wandering around. Nice new furniture and manicured lawns existed only on tv.

Eating People

One of very few movies I’ve watched twice in cinema. It was such an intense experience. Upon first watch, it made me feel disgusted, appalled and shocked but also interested and deeply invested in the story. Upon my second watch, this movie really clicked with me. All of a sudden I was crying in theatre during the kills because I felt the loneliness and despair of being different. I’m so glad this movie exists.

This movie was barely promoted. I do think Rylance and Chalamet, had performances, that were a bit too big for Russell’s subtle performance, but it was just my speed. Russell also plays far too young in this role, at least for the age they want to portray her as. I didn’t get a lot of the vibes, of any of the movies you mentioned, other than the road-trip. Though, I really liked how they used the cannibalism, as something these wanderers do, but each have a very different idea of going about it. Very minimal, for a cannibal love story. I couldn’t even get through half the book. It’s just not very good.

You did describe well what was interesting about the movie and I think it had potential for the reasons you described. There were moments I felt a thrill, but it would be dashed by something clunky and obvious. And overall the characters were more forgettable than most Bonnie and Clyde couples. The most interesting thing about this movie was how it seemed to suggest a sexual guilt metaphor. IMO the Rules of Attraction movie is way better than this movie. That one really made an impression on me, but maybe that’s because I didn’t read the book.

When you said that in the book they live normal lives it made me think of American Psycho.

Thank you for this. Bones and All is my favourite movie of 2022. I'm a big fan of Luca Guadagnino, so of course I was seated on day 1. And I don't want to sound like a pretentious cinephile but eh, whatever...I've never felt such a strong urge to gatekeep a movie from "normies" because I knew, that audience, that has never ever touched European (art) cinema and needs fast moving sfx to be entertained, will just not get it. Call Me By Your Name also constantly gets called boring. Oh well. I've seen a lot of people online struggling with the fact, that it's not a formulaic horror, nor romance, nor coming of age and they don't know how to deal with that. And about the book, I agree. I was shocked finding out, that it's based on some YA novel because the movie doesn't feel YA at all...and I'm thankful for that.

something else that this film might subtly be commenting on is the damage the older generations have passed onto their children. in believing that they can consume without consequence they have added more hardship and damage for the next generations to try and fix. kind of like lee and marin’s cannibalistic parents having kids despite (maybe) knowing that their condition might be genetic

Lesser books make some of the best adaptations. "Silence of the Lambs" is just aggressively mediocre, trite, and flat. But the story and characters were engaging *enough* that it spawned one of the best thrillers of all time.

Cool that some people like it but this one wasn't for me at all. I actually went in totally blind because I have one of those unlimited movie passes and for the first 30 min I'll admit I was blown away by just how good the movie looked. Found myself losing interest pretty quickly after Sully was introduced though, the leading lady was just so lifeless and dull. There was a lot of unintentional comedy, or at least I was laughing at shit like the cornfield handjob. The "twist" afterwards was also goofy as hell -- how can some gay carny support a wife and kids? I won't spoil the ending in a comment but I also laughed aloud at what Timmy says to the black chick. I feel like you have to buy into the premise and I wasn't sold. Just struck me as the typical weird/degenerate shit being peddled by 95% of theater releases these days. Good-looking but vacuous. Has anyone seen Trouble Every Day by Claire Denis? Very similar premise and another movie my peanut zoomer brain couldn't get thru lol, but still strikes me as being more artfully done.

Maybe it was just me but I read this movie as more of some kinda dark comedy on my watch through. There was just something so absurd about seeing people engage in cannibalistic violence so readily and frequently that it struck me as pretty funny. I think part of that might just be casting though Timothy Chalamet is too much of a meme to me. Literally like 75% of his acting I've seen is just him looking at things with a kind of blank contemplative stare.

Why does everyone say the cannibalism represents homosexuality?

Ngl, while I like the movie, your criticism of the book seems a tad dismissive, especially in its description of it being an "airport novel for teenage girls", and most of your criticisms stem from it not having the same tone as the movie, and not really dissecting why that might be. Going to read it and form my own opinion, if nothing else I love the book for inspiring the movie.

I’m baffled you didn’t make the gay comparison; the movie even references it directly. The parallels between the killers and gay lovers are obvious, though obviously reducing it to that is stupid

The book was much better, they set apart the psychosexual aspects of the story (Maren only ate males she felt attracted to, and if she ate someone of the oposite gender, it was only because she was desperate). And also, ruined the hospital scene when she finally reunited with her father (not her mother). In the book it was an emotional situation that made you want to cry learning how Maren's father institutionalized himself so that he wouldnt hurt anyone no more, but in the movie, they dishumanized the mother into a monster who you cannot feel sorry for. I feel like the movie restricted itself, by not allowing the viewers themselves into the story projecting whatever you might think canibalism is supposed to stand for. Overall, it was ok, I read the book before watching because I thought the premise for the movie was really good. But to think that It's better than the book, is a long stretch.

I haven’t watched this cause I just can’t stand TC any more. He seems to be used as this “insert sad but pretty boy” for stories. He was the worst part of Dune for me, and co to yes to play the same emotional beats in every film he’s in. I loved Call me by your Name and Suspiria (2018), but this just didn’t really peak my interest enough to see it.

Film is a really good allegory for being LGBT. Poorly understood by the majority, have a quirk that they need to indulge that cannot be ignored. Disowned by their parents. super gay.
