There has been A LOT of talk about the new "Silver Series" Line from Hot Wheels. I've got quite a few sets here, so it's time to walk through what the Silver Series is about, and offer some of my thoughts, good and bad.

The best part about these mid-premiums are the deco. They use tampos rather than those dot-matrix prints the full-premiums now have that look terrible. Just wish these were easier to find. Just like Boulevard because they’re Walmart only usually. And even when you do, the cases don’t even have all the models. Chase or not.

Tbh this tier actually my favorite so far, because you got better details than the basics but cost lower than the premiums (not to mention the print quality of the tampos are better than premiums). I'm glad that they produced more of them with metal base.

Love the "Silver Series" line. The card art is nice, and the cars having front and back deco is awesome. However, they should have left the "Chase" car aspect to the premium line. Now it will be quite difficult for set builders to obtain a full set. All in all, great sets so far though.
@louiscamacho11955 ай бұрын
Not really. Because for the mainlines you have treasure hunts and super treasure hunts. For premiums you have the black chase. Now for the silver line a chase only seems fair

I'm pretty new hot wheels collecting, but I'm honestly digging some of the mid-range, then premium sets they are releasing just because as someone else in the comments said, a-lot of main-lines are kid focused and its nice to have some more collector/adult focused.

I've seen evidence of 5 of these "silver series" mixes hit Walmart in the span of a month and 3 days, and yet I've only been able to snag 1 or 2 from each. Here's a novel idea Mattel, how about making fewer different mixes a year and distributing greater quantities of each mix, so that fans of your product have half a chance of actually finding it.
@hotwheelshuntinguk5 ай бұрын
I agree with this fully. I’d rather have less to find but have a high chance of getting what I want. I don’t understand the logic of it. Surely they would make more money making more of what people want?

I really like that this tier is organized now, even if the models themselves are inconsistent in terms of quality. I honestly am buying a couple of these sets just for the card art
@GarrettBroadnax5 ай бұрын
Thanks for giving the official explanation. Ever since the $3 Volkswagen line came out last year i was confused about the direction. To clarify, the silver series gets more intricate wheels, more detailed liveries, sometimes metal bodies, and the clear coat is on top of the tampos. I'm all for it. Btw I love the avant wheels (looks like polestar), I almost bought it just for that. And I also found many many cases of the Porsche "6" packs with no chase.
@Scorbunny_Loquendero_20005 ай бұрын
The Basics line is more focusing to the childish market (With lines like Character Cars, Monster Trucks, Skate or Racerverse)
@latent44075 ай бұрын
This is intentional and exactly the problem imo. Hot Wheels knows there are adult collectors of basics. Adults can afford more. And they need to milk more money from that audience. So make basics too basic, cartoonish, bad wheels. Make cars we actually want and charge more for them. Put different wheels, more deco to make it feel premium. Personally, I think they should just continue to make basics better and charge $1.50. I realize the retailer and cheap chinese manufacturers put pressure on this market, but a slightly improved basic car is the experience most of us want.
@c.c.10705 ай бұрын
I think they’re doing this to try and discourage the scalpers. Way too many people and retailers are starting to complain about adult males (definitely not men) about going and taking literally everything off the shelves to sell for more!

Basics has Mars Rovers and other NASA stuff, StarWars Speeders, ST Enterprise, aka Hollywood props plus EVs that aren't even out yet making mainlines more than just the 5% that are "fantasy" kid bs. At $1.00 they can't hurt your feelings although at $1.20 it's a rip-off now since 98% are old castings. 🚗

Not a chase! Chases are a black version of one of the models in the set, and are designated as # 0 in the series. The 914 is green, and is number 6/6, not 0... I suppose that shouldn’t be too surprising, because even restocking mainlines around here seems to almost never happen. It makes no sense given that I live in one of the largest metropolitan areas in California. I know there is demand here, btw, since the supply just dwindles down to almost literally nothing in some of these stores. I'm in Northern California too and I know your pain. Every Walmart or Target I visit has no premiums, just empty pegs that say "HW Car Culture." It's so disappointing. Either there are buyers that show up early on freight day and take everything or, like you said, they rarely restock. The only Walmart that had a full stock of premiums, mainly Team Transport, was locked up behind glass. It turned me off to buying anything. And it may be a security issue the way things have been going in our state. Either they lock them up or not stock them at all, and maybe most of them have chosen the latter.

Mattel's distribution is so out of whack. Why can't these be evenly distributed to store across America, instead of having some stores getting tons of cases, while others never even see certain mixes, such as the F&F, we have not seen one single mix of them since 2020, it's aggravating, then recently New Jersey has been getting slammed with the new Porsche, Gran Turismo, and JDM sets, while my Walmart has literally only received 1 case of the JDM and maybe 2 cases of the Posrche set. We never see Zamacs, it's so unbalanced

In my opinion. I'm in to this Silver Series of Hot Wheels line, it kind of harkens back to the late 2000s and early 2010s "middle line" of series like the Ferrari Racer or the original Speed Machines. I don't mind about the silver and gold ranking stuff that they're doing here and I don't mind about going after chases either, although that 67 Camaro looks pretty sick. I have mixed opinions about the wheel designs though, like you said on those open holed 5-spoke wheels, they look cheap for the most part, and I agree on that, and some of the wheel designs are a bit over the top for me and it kinda needs a bit more sidewalls for the tires, akin to CM6 wheels. That being said, can't wait to see these things in stores. On a side note, this is what the revived Speed Machines should've been on the first place, not as part of the Car Culture line.

What a beauty. What is that? Satin red? The Mazda Cosmo Sport is still missing front and rear grill details. Why pay more than a dollar for that one when It's just like the mainline version? Those wheels you hate look better blacked out with a chrome ring. So am I to assume that if the Corvette set had come out this year instead of last year that the blisters would have a silver stripe? Will the new Stars and Stripes have one. What about all those other series we pay more than a buck for? Ultra Hots, Flying Colors, Anniverasy, Halloween, Spring sets. Even the Color shifters have some license models in the sets. if Mattel is gonna do something they might as well be consistent.

I honestly had no problem with the basic-plus themed series that Hot Wheels has been doing over the past several years. I like that these exclusive themed sets gives Mattel the opportunity to touch on additional themes beyond what's in basic and appreciate the full front and rear deco. I don't need Real Riders on these themed sets and I don't need metal bases, as those just jack up the price. At that point they might as well be premium releases. I'm not a fan of the new plastic wheels and don't see the value to where I should be expected to pay more for cars that have these over any other plastic wheels. I don't like how this area between basic and premium has become complete chaos. There is no consistency. The aforementioned metal bases that some cars have and others do not within the same mix just adds confusion and was not well thought out. Some sets are $2.97, some $3.24, some $3.47. Pick a price and stick with it! I understand prices go up over the years, but I personally feel $2.47 is enough of a price hike over basic to pay for that extra tampo pass. And don't get me started on the fact that random mixes have chases. Treasure hunts and super treasure hunts bring out the worst in people as it is. I can't confirm the correlation, but Car Culture became near impossible to find at just about the same time as chases were added to this line. The greed induced hoarding and scalping has gotten completely out of control. I'm sure the scalpers and hard core collectors love this shit, but I'm just looking for a fun hobby involving something I love, cars, without the drama and the endless hours of hard work beyond the 55 hours a week I give to my full-time job. Mattel needs to focus on getting back to delivering a nice product that the regular man/woman can buy without jumping through all the hoops placed in front of us due to Mattel's artificially created scarcity.

Saying they're ditching "basic wheels" for this line I think is incorrect and too early of a call. They're still a mainline style, hard plastic wheel. Mattel is simply justifying the cost of the line by introducing these new wheel styles exclusively (AT THIS TIME) in this line. It's part of 3 things that justify the higher cost: 1. Castings used - possibly and seemingly mostly metal/metal (body and chassis) 2. "Exclusive" new wheels 3. Increased tampo hits (aka: more passes) which more more deco on all visible sides of cars. These are real tampo decos too, not that digital print look which leans towards a hideous grainy look when finer in detail. The wheels for this new "Silver" line are no different than the introduction of a new style wheel like when the "Cool Classics" line was introduced. Those "Retro Slot" wheels were labeled "exclusive" to that line at the time too. That is until they started showing up on standard "Mainlines" releases in the last few years.

The mix of plastic/metal base doesn't sit well with me. All are priced at the "silver" level, but only 3 of the 6 vintage have metal bases? Sounds like cost cutting by Mattel. If they released a case of premiums and 1/2 of them didn't have rubber tires, collectors would be upset. If you are charging us $3-4 bucks per car, then give us $3-4 quality.
