The Last Bacon

Күн бұрын

In today's episode of Video Game Lore, we'll be taking a look at not one, not two but five different animals from the world of Subnautica - all with the word ''ray'' in their name. I'll be telling you everything we know about them as well as any other trivia that I'm able to dig up.
Thank you for watching, come back again!

Just an FYI - the reason I didn't mention the SkyRays is because I'm saving them for a ''dry land animals'' lore video :) thought it would fit better there!

I think my favorite part about Subnautica is not just the fact that there’s many different creatures, but the fact that the game developers created their own biodiversity in the game. My favorite example is the peepers, how they evolved into the oculus down in the mushroom caves. All these tiny details make the game so much more awesome
@TheLastBacon

You said it, brother-Bear. Before the hell that is the Lava zone, it was awesome to encounter such a beautiful location and be unable to resist trudging all the way back through the Lost River with my Cyclops to go grab all the materials to build a base there. It quickly became my biggest base and, despite the massive pressure, I could not help but to make it entirely glass. Otherwise, I might risk missing a single second of that perfect serene beauty.

I have a theory: in the primary containment facility you can find plenty of specimens. That theory is that the Crimson Ray is the ghost Ray, but evolved for the lava zone. I also belive the lava eyeeye is an evolved eyeeye and that the magmarang is in fact a boomerang.

Today my uncle brought his Nintendo to a family meetup, and he had both subnautica games on it. I played the regular subnautica for about a hour and he let me roam around in his prawn suit. I found myself in this biome I'd never seen before and there were river prowlers near the top and a giant ghost ray in the middle- and I thought I knew everything about subnautica, and seeing that majestic ghost ray for the first time was AMAZING!

I know this sounds stupid, but it was bothering me for the whole video. I feel like the ghost leviathan may have shared ancestry with the ghost ray. They both have the blue outer membrane covering their inner bodies. Also, the ghost rays seem attracted to the ghost Leviathan juveniles. Wherever you can find ghost rays, they are not too far away from the ghost juveniles. I know it's a forced connection, but I felt like I had to share it.

I suspect that the crimson ray is the oldest of the family of rays, seeing as the biomes of Subnautica are located on a dormant volcano, it’s easy to see where the ground zero for life might have been. Second was most likely the ghost ray, evolving into or together with the ghost river‘s toxic environment. (This is evident through their Shared and yet obviously very specialised physique. The next one might have been the jelly ray, further degenerating a solid body structure and internal and external organs in favor of a lighter body, suited for the life in low pressure environments, living off of dead plant matter. (We are also gradually evolving from hunting prey actively to living solely on plants with the abundance of the latter increasing with the changing habitat). I am also quite sure that the toxic flesh was first present in the ghost ray, as the crimson ray didn’t really have to depend on it and the ghost ray posing softer tissue and living in a poisonous environment. Likely a viable defensive mechanism, this simply wasn’t dropped through evolution and so every species living closer to the surface retains this aspect. But please feel free to explain how the rabbit ray fits into this to me. Maybe a direct evolution from the crimson ray through one of the other accesses to the lava zone..?
@TheLastBacon
@TheLastBacon 4 жыл бұрын
Really good theories :) can't exactly explain the rabbit ray - we can also start thinking about the glow-whale which seems distantly related to these, I suppose something like this could come in very handy if I ever try to make a full evolutionary tree of Subnautica!

Perhaps this is a radical thought, but... I'm pretty sure the Ghost Leviathan is also a descendant of the 'Alpha Ray' specie. The translucent body, the coloration, the fact that a flock of Ghost Rays that still circle the Cove Tree... The Ghost Leviathan even has those little tendrils hanging off its body in a similar placement to the Jelly Ray's tendrils. The Ghost Leviathan also exemplifies the trait of forward facing eyes like the Crimson Ray, and a similar mouth structure.

I really wish I could hatch a Ghostray. Jellyrays are cool and all, but Ghostrays are so pretty. I would have a Legion of them around my base.

I hope if we ever get to travel the void in a massive base sized sub that there’s a ray leviathan out there that has an entire biome on its back. I imagine it would be docile but if you got to close to it’s mouth it could bite. Maybe it’s a sting ray and if your sub or another leviathan got to close to its tail it would sting for massive hull damage, but if you approached in smaller vehicles like the sea glide it wouldn’t see you as a threat.

how to remember each of the rays! rabbit rays: they are boring jellyrays: overpopulate near your base after you bring 2 eggs home causing 5 fps ghostrays: jellyrays, but transparent and cooler crimson rays: ghostrays, but black and red

I think the rays might be related to the boomerangs (and by extension, the magmarangs), simply because of their body plan, and there is a ray species in sector 0 called the arrow ray which resembles the boomerang. I also think that the reef back leviathans might be more closely related to the rays than to other leviathans.
@TheLastBacon
@TheLastBacon Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely possible that boomerangs might be close to them :)
@VesmirCorporation
@VesmirCorporation 5 күн бұрын
No. Boomerangs probably are much more closely related to the peeper family. But reefbacks could certainly be the "hagfish of rays" (hagfish means that they are in the group, but not very closely related to other members of the group)

Since I’ve set up a base in the jellyshroom caves, I decided to spruce up the place by adding jellyrays! Unlike most invasive species, I think they will actually be a big help to the ecosystem by eating unused jellyshrooms (considering if you never see a crabsnake use a specific jellyshroom and you live in their natural habitat, it is probably decaying.).

ALL OF THE CREDIT GOES TO @Irobert1115HD FOR THIS THEORY, I DID NOT CREATE IT. I SAW IT ON AN OLD VIDEO OF HIS SO I POSTED IT BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS COOL AND YOU GUYS SHOULD KNOW OF IT. okay sorry for caps 0_o @The Last Bacon i have a theory about how the fabricator makes food (if the game never said how the thing works): i think the aparatus scans the fish and then turns the thing into teleporter data and then uses the reform step to create the wanted result. or with better words: it turns the thing into data and then proceeds to generate a version with the wanted functions or abilities/ stats like cooked peeper is realy only the dataset of peeper with the added attributes of being cooked and the temperature. or with other words: one of the best ways to set up a survival replicator.
@TheLastBacon
@TheLastBacon 5 жыл бұрын
Damn, that's definitely a very specific theory :) I could definitely see it - who knows how technology like that could work in the future.

In the collapsed precursor lab there were a bunch of rays, one of each type, pinned in a glass display case. I don't remember exactly what the scan said, but it might have had to do with the Kharaa Bacterium and the cure.
