The Spring has finally arrived - the weather is lovely - the soil is warming up! So - time to catch up with seed planting and garden plans. In this LONG video I tackle the overgrown strawberry bed, make the paper plan for the raised beds and plant some of the vegetable seeds I'll need to put in them - I'm a bit late to be honest - but I think everything will catch up - I hope so - I remember last year I was way to early with everything - this year a bit late ... maybe next year I'll be juuuust right!
At the end, I feed Rocky and take that Very Naughty Goose for a swim. Bad Goose!

I so enjoyed seeing Rocky. I was blessed to have a feral boy in my life for a couple of years. I was able to capture and neuter him, but the return bit didn’t work quite as planned! I kept him in the trap cage, in the conservatory with heat on overnight, after he’d been to the vets for his ‘proceedure’! Once released from the cage, he made his way around to the side of the house, and took up residence on the back step until he got fed. Over the weeks I managed to win his confidence, and he would come into the kitchen to be fed. For eighteen months he shared his life with me, becoming incredibly affectionate, the one day he simply went out, and I didn’t see him again. I know that he had health issues, but for the time we shared I will be forever grateful. Big Tig enriched my life, and taught me so much about trust and unconditional love.

Looks like you are off to a good start! I admire how you live with weeds and cantankerous animals with such good grace. We must love them...we do. Eileen has captured my heart with her haughty hissy orneriness. Clara is clever and steadfast in her search for culinary pleasures....have to admire her tenacity. And Norma has the cutest bum in the farm yard. Norma is all heart...as are you, Kate. Thanks for sharing your world with us.

Looks like my kind of day. A few years ago we sold our home to live in a motor home and move to a warmer place, more to my husband's liking. I really, really miss the large gardens I had that produced prolific bouquets of flowers, a multitude of herbs and lots of strawberries and fresh vegetables. So now, I enjoy gardening vicariously through all your gardening videos and travails through the woods and other wild area where creatures abound with the wild flowers. It is pure joy for me and I thank you so much for your generous sharings.

I love your videos! I couldn't wait to get home from work to watch this. I love Clara the hen also and the way she talks, so sweet, mild and contented. You should just let her roam with you when you are outside and put her in when you go in for the day. I had a duck once (he didn't know he was a duck...thought he was a dog or cat) that followed me all over the farm and quacked at me to give him worms. I really miss him. I love Norma also!

Plant a few of the strawberries around the outside edge of the chicken run, so some can grow through for them to eat, but they can't get to the main body of the plant to chomp through all of the main plant.

Hi Kate, wonderful long video. It was nice to visit you and Clara and Eileen and Norma this afternoon. No need to go the gym for you when working so hard in the garden! Clara is clever and naughty indeed or she has Alzheimer😁 Perhaps you can hang the strawberry plants or put them on the steps of an old ladder? What a wonderful idea of the nwspaper pots, i have seen people use the inside of a toiletpaper roll but this is the same. Eileen attacked your friend but mayby she wants to protect you or she is jealous. I guess she needs a friend when swimming in the lake. She looks a bit lonely. I love the way you talk to everything that is near you , a seed, a person, the animals, your you tube friends. Thank you. Keep going Kate, take care.

Eileen does not sound happy about her confinement. She was simply being a good watch goose. Protecting you from all comers. Amazing how intimidating a goose can be isn't it? Your soil is so beautiful. I'm envious. I'm sure it's taken some years of effort to get it to this point. I'll bet you have no problem finding homes for those strawberry plants..... The garden centers/nurseries here sell bare root starts for $1.00 each! Clara is far too clever. You had best keep an eye on her or next thing you know she'll be heading up a full scale 'great escape' from the chicken yard. (At this point she's only doing recon.) xxx

Our garden is up. The collard greens I pick every other day. Cucumbers, cabbage, okra, celery, corn, potatoes and one tomato plant. Put out elephant ears, iris, gladiolus, amyrillis, white and red, cactus, a new bird bath and lilies. Never thought I'd like lilies. Garlic and onions. Onions here are $1.88 a pound. Clara just wants to be held, cuddled and to sit with you. I need a chicken. Oh, we have a pecan, grapefruit and lemon tree. Norma, the grass nosed cat. I am keeping a garden schedule to know what grows and what doesn't. Do you use heirloom or organic seeds to harvest and replant? I didn't mention green beans. Gets too hot here for peas. Just buy a can. Good luck Kate. Texas USA.

I enjoyed our visit this morning. We have had too much rain, chilly temps, and cloudy days to be out in the garden. Gardening has just starting here, spreading mulch, manure, and thinking about which plants needing division. A lot of gifted people in the UK, listening to a gardener from Ireland, John Lord very entertaining and knowledgeable about everything in the garden. I wish I had more land to plant, but then it’s more work. Raised bed are great, I have only one, so much easier on the back as you well know Thanks for sharing, love your videos ❤️👍

Oh Kate..I wish I could be your volunteer. It looks so beautiful there right now. We have a bit of sun, but it's still too cool to do any planting. And an excess of strawberries??? Some lucky person will sure enjoy those. So elder weed is nettles, huh? I had to go into a plot of nettles to get a ball for my daughter. I was wearing shorts and my legs were stinging for hours. Never again. I don't have the production going on here like you do, but soon I'll have some fun out there. Such a healthy way of life. Have fun!!!

Well that was lovely! I don’t have a garden anymore, so I loved this. I do remember my worst invasive plants - buttercups and I warred every year. The same with morning glory that does the same thing as your ground elder; any tiny bit of root will sprout a new plant! I also made a huge mistake and actually planted Melissa in one of the beds, which the bees loved, but which is practically impossible to get rid of once it’s got it’s head. Oh, and celendine -another rampant grower, which I wouldn’t have minded but discovered that white flies just loved it! My Gordon Setter Felix and I used to fight over the raspberries, but other than that, he and my Irish Setter Gyp were very good in the garden. It is said that if you want to know where to put garden paths, just follow kids or dogs who will show you the best places, and they did. I spent many happy hours over the years in my garden, but I have the kind of mobility issues now that really preclude it - but they don’t stop me from enjoying someone else’s!! So thank you Kate.

Enjoyed your video as always Kate.. I love to see how you garden. I am trying to do a small garden this year in raised beds and bins. I have never been successful with planting anything but I am determined this year that I will have some fresh veggies. I have Tomatoes, 3 different colors of bell peppers, cucumber (1 from a plant the other from seed) carrots, 3 different kinds of potatoes, sweet potatoes and radishes. I also planted some marigolds by the tomato plants...someone told me they were good for keeping the pests away. Happy gardening and have a Blessed day. Glad to see Norma is keeping her nose out of the grass....

A weed is just a plant that you don't know all of its wonderful uses. Nettles and Plantain are awesome. I am watching you put them in a discard bin and wanting to snatch them and have a feast as well as dry some for later. Wanted to reach through the TV. I am casting the video. Of course this isn't live and I can't time travel. If only. My word, I need to move back into the countryside where they grow thick anytime you turn the soil. To me most plants other consider weeds, I harvest and use and am profoundly thankful for them. I consider them the first crop of the garden. Blessings they are for the most part, if you learn how to utilize their bounty. Some will always be weeds and need removed, but others may become nature's free gift for your table and medicine cabinet. They have mine. Currently I live in an apartment and no chance to garden. If I had better transportation I would apply for an allotment at the community garden. This town doesn't have much available space. Plots don't open up for use often.

Oh Kate. What a treat! I’m watching this at the end of a very busy day...taking care of my lovely folks. This was wonderful. Clever Clara 😃 cheeky but who can blame her, she wanted to spend time with you 😁. It’s so lovely to see you in the garden 🌸🌷🐝🐔🐱 Thank you x

Hi Kate. I'm so enjoying you in your garden. My fingers itch to get started but I can't. I have to clean out my balcony since the owners of the apartment building decided that they are going to some maintenance on them, again. So no plants or fresh veggies or fruits from my balcony this year. 😕 I so looked forward trying to grow some jalapenos. But still I can watch you, and your animals. Just love Norma, taking her front row seat in front of the camera. 😂 Clara just knows where she can get the really good stuff, her snacks and dessert. Eileen being herself as always. And poor Rocky. He was glad you closed the window but the look on his face when he saw you outside said all. 😂 Oh and get yourself ready for a challenge Steve more or less set out for you. Making Snack Clubs. Craig already said "No pressure Kate". 😂 good luck with that one. 😉 💕xxxx oh a thought about the strawberries you don't have room for. Why not make hanging baskets with the strawberries. I remember Jamie Oliver doing something like that in his garden and he got lot's of fruits from them.

First garden video of the year. WooHoo!! It seems like you almost need a people garden and an animal garden at your place. 😆 I smiled when I heard your name on Hercule’s Chocolate’s video this morning. You’re so famous 😉

I'm a little sad that I can't get a garden in this year. We have had so much rain and strange weather that it has been impossible to get the ground tilled. I have decided that I am going to try and get a few tomato plants in and call it good.

John just called round for a chat - I showed him your map book and he was very excited! He's looking forward to pinning even more accurately than with his phone app. He was really touched by your gift, as am I! But it is lovely to know my kids are on board with what i am doing! You are really kind! Now - get those pots made! xxxxxxxxx
