New VW eUP! review - the anti-Tesla EV? // Jonny Smith

The Late Brake Show

Күн бұрын

Why do I think this could be the anti-Tesla EV? Simply because the 160 mile new VW e-Up! is a very simple package - an EV for non tech freaks perhaps? It is an electric car that doesn't so much celebrate technology, but feels pleasantly analogue for a new car with new lithium-ion drivetrains that lives beneath.
In the previous CarPervert episode I waved goodbye to my 2018 e-Golf long term test vehicle. I had become accustomed to the familiar Golf driving experience, married to a 120-140 mile EV range. This is the new 2020 revised VW e-UP! electric supermini. Its battery pack has increased significantly since its 2013 launch - from 18.7kWh to 32.3kWh - and with that the crucial real world range.
The Up! itself is now a 10 year old car, but doesn't feel it. This e-Up! costs just under £20,000 new, and so it is priced similarly to a nearly-new VW e-Golf. The Golf is more luxurious and spacious, but the cheekly little e-Up! beats its WLTP for real world range.

I quite like the 'leave the infotainment and nav functions up to the user's phone' design. I mean, try as they might, car manufacturers are always going to suck in that aspect compared to smartphone manufacturers, and you cut costs. Plus, getting a better phone means you upgrade your car´s nav system as a bonus, and each family member that uses the car gets their own custom thingies.
@jwenting
@jwenting 4 жыл бұрын
yeah. The one thing that always bugged me about my old (2014) Up! was that the satnav system was buggy and wasn't easy to update (especially after Garmin discontinued support for it in 2017 or so). Was stuck with 2015 maps forever, plus it tended to forget it actually had a microphone and speakers every few weeks, requiring a hard reset to make the satnav and carkit work again.

The Up! has a really stripped-back interior, but actually it's not that cheap. I have a regular Up! and a car that costs 10x the amount the Up! cost, and there is nothing in the £80K car that I miss in the £8K Up! If you connect your phone to the Up! you get a lot more diagnostic info, and really as much 'entertainment' as you would ever want in a car, and you just use Android Auto or CarPlay for maps, reading messages etc via the car audio, and of course google maps and google voice assistant work way better than any in-car system ever does.

White, with almost all extras and a 3 years service plan - cost around 14-15k GBP with current currency rates and government "discounts" here in Norway One of the biggest downsides to this car is the rapid charging. It says 40kw on paper, but in real life situations its really quite a bit slower... And that is kinda a dealbreaker if you are planning to use it on longer trips. Jonny you are spot on. I think this, the Seat Mii and the Skoda are game changers for this car segment and if dealers get people to test and experience them, there will be no going back. Get past the basics and the 'simplicity'...........great cars!! Hence why I've ordered the Seat Mii Electric......cannot wait!

Pip Stein Also like many (most) ICE cars... the “filler” door locks/unlocks with the main locks. I guess Jonny doesn’t often do his own fill ups? 🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
@alanhillyard1639
@alanhillyard1639 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the filler door opened so the car was obviously unlocked, so the disconnect here was just that the caps lock back on after about 45 seconds after the car is unlocked. Not the same as a petrol car at all, the flap is open when the car is open and you can open the filler cap when you please.

I've been hoping for a KZfaq comparison review of the eGolf and the eUP. That you should do it Jonny, rather than some of the KZfaq clowns, is a bonus. After watching both reviews, I think I'm more inclined to buy a second hand eGolf which has adaptive cruise and an automatic parking brake, plus of course, LED headlights and a heat pump option.

The recharging caps in the back are locked, which is why you could not open them. All you need to do is use the fob and press unlock button which unlocks the caps, for recharging. Much easier than trying to use a stick to pry them open.

If i would go for a spartan VAG EV i would go for the cheapest of the 3, probably the Skoda. They also offer funkier colors like canari-yellow and Skoda-green-metallic. Good value for money. I seem to remember that in the Seat cruise control is an optional extra.

Good review but, mate, do some more research! Like how to release a charge point cover. Original e -up had CCS. It never had 3 door due battery pack length. It had better range than original i3 BEV, Leaf and non Teslas due low aerodynamic drag (smaller frontal area) and coast mode. Real world it's not a slow car.

I find it interesting comparing this price in GBP, about 20,000 GBP is $24,450 USD. New Bolt's are selling in the US for about $28,000 USD and that's with 238 mile range, 0-60 in 6.5, much better infotainment, etc. I would think that price Bolt in the UK/Europe would outsell most every other EV, no?

"little" EVs tend to be four seat simply to help them pass the heavy load gradient tests! Part of the OE tests is to ensure the car can cope with being fully loaded (occupants and luggage) and still pass gradability and kerb climb requirements. With only 4 seats, that test is 20% easier!
@maxtorque2277
@maxtorque2277 4 жыл бұрын
@M Bacon And where do you think that "stated load" comes from? yes thats right, it's set by the OE, by carrying out lots of tests (tests which incidentally as a vehicle devleopment engineer i have done for the last 20 or more years....) and in order to apss those tests, typcially "Low power" EVs get down graded to being 4 seaters, simply to limit GVW, which means the test requirements are less stringent. For example, the "kerb climb" test, carried out by all OE,s requires the vehicle to be sit at 90degrees to a standard height kerb, with both front wheels touching the kerb, and to be able to climb up and over that kerb, without a "runup". For an EV can only ever make the torque the motor makes at zero speed this is a difficult test when fully loaded! Conventional ICE cars can slip clutches, use torque converters to increase wheel torque, and even be abused by simpyl reving the engine up and dumping the clutch (ie using the engines inertia to generate extra wheel torque to get up the kerb. Evs can do none of those things, the motor makes max torque, and they either climb up or they don't !!!

Only like on every Up! We got an Up! Beats 2 years ago pre-registered with 6 miles on it for £8K (although list was more like £11.5K). The inside a build is exactly the same as the eUP. So - £23K price point gives them about £12K for batteries. If they ever made money with the Up!, then they should make money with the eUp (and we need them to).

I think the e auto manufactures keep going for more gadgets to attract people to buy but that means more cost.Its fine but a lot of people would gladly go for a more simple car because of the price. I am one of those people. I live in Canada and even the base model 3 starts at 55k and that is way out of the buying range for the average working class person here.

I did not expect the channel name to be so appropriate. But back on topic. I still believe the Golf GTE is the best value car. Sportive, 40 kms of full electric range and long range petrol capability. If you need to do short or long trips then that one wins by miles. In the short-medium to medium-long range this may be great. But it is skinny and as you said has very similar cheaper options. However, a new e-golf (why do they even bother) is coming around this summer and the ID3 will be finally here at the end of 2020.

Paul Carmi It’s just my opinion, but I don’t think owning electric cars has anything to do with guilting anyone. Personally, I think it just makes economic sense to own more efficient vehicles. I’m a liberal and I love cars, no matter what fuel they run on. I’m just saying it would be nice to have the choice to buy cars the rest of the world gets, both electric and internal combustion.

Good review. I had a second hand e-up! until it was stolen in 2017. Last year I bought a brand new e-Golf. I have to say, that while the e-Golf is a pretty nice car, I always have preferred the e-up! That may sound strange but that's just me. Even when I first did test drives back in 2015, I found the e-Golf a bit heavy and cumbersome while the e-up! has always felt zippy and fun. I'm seriously considering switching back to the latest version of the e-up! One factual point: the e-up! has always had a CCS port and DC Rapid Charge capability.
