What I do when I encounter an overgrown customer's lawn is cut it down to length, and then raise the deck an inch and go over it 2-3 more times. Doing that will give the deck more "breathing room" to mulch it up, and it will distribute those smaller clippings deeper into the lawn canopy. It sounds nuts, but it actually works. I've had centipede and zoysia lawns with 10-11" of cut, and got their clippings to virtually disappear. of course, mulching blades work best for that, etc.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. With a crazy work schedule and coaching baseball, the lawn got out of control. Plus it rains a lot in the PNW, so mowing a lawn that was wet AND overgrown wasn’t going to work. Then after chopping down weeks of spring growth, like an idiot, I decided a couple days later to drop the deck low and try and cut pretty low to get rid of the stalks from the seed heads. It took a few weeks of babying for the lawn to recover.

Good grief. I'm not sure how one "accidently" throws equipment away - but if you don't have the equipment to bag, the first thing to do would be to beg, borrow, or rent something that could. Gray leaf spot? Would this be a good time to point out that the first rule of fungal infections is to bag, don't mulch, to avoid spreading the spores and infection? Then you mow (and bag) at the highest setting to start with, drop it a notch and mow it again the next day, repeating the process until it is at your normal preferred mowing height. Also, continue to bag, not mulch, until the fungus is under control. Glad I could help. And while I'll probably continue to use the N-Ext line, I think I'll look elsewhere if I need lawn advice. Signed, a happy owner (and as-needed user) of a bagging mower and multiple rakes, including the Maintainer.

EGO electric mowers already have a grass catching bag. If it is damaged, you can even buy a 3rd party replacement grass catching bag for an Ego mower for as little as $35 USD online. . . And that makes it so confusing. WHY didn't the Lawn Care Nut simply cut and bag at least some of the grass during multiple mowings in this video?

So on the big mowers they typically mow a half inch sometimes a more lower then the setting due to the weight of the mower compressing the grass unlike a push mower that can ride atop the grass. You would have been better off with a mulching deck. My 48” ex mark can cut at 6” and it doesn’t clog up. The 48”toro I had with a bigger motor would clog up. Ex marks deck is designed very well.

So far the efforts are going great, I've gone from a pretty barren weedy wasteland, that was only mowed as maintenance, to greenery all around now. I get told my yard looks better now than it when it was previously professionally landscaped. I've gotten the itch and want that spray cart set up and to start trying all these great products you advertise. As much as I love scotts, I dont want to be just a step product line guy anymore. For those who watch and don't play golf, pick it up. So true, which is why I try to mow my own. Lawn care companies typically try to keep to their weekly schedule, so will tend to cut it shorter to avoid overgrown lawns in a week. Paying them to mow twice a week would be exorbitant. I also have the same Ego self propelled mower on a quarter acre lot, and I can barely cut the lawn once on a 10 amp-hour battery.

I have citrazoy in south Florida (ft Lauderdale area) that I planted in Feb. I can’t figure out why it is struggling so much in the freedom factory. This stuff is bullet proof here. I’ve tried empire and zorro, and it gets killed by fungus every year. The citrazoy is really easy to grow. Just like st Augustine, but cut it shorter (1 3/4 inches at my house). It’s Amazing! Also, been I. The position you’ve been with overgrown st Augustine. In the future, maybe try to side discharge away from the area you’re cutting and just leave it till the next cut. That way it’s a thinner layer that can dry out on top of the grass. it will be just one layer. Then it won’t be so heavy smashing down your grass. I’m no expert, but that’s the way I’ve done it in the past to avoid it clumping up on you.
@Homegardener55
@Homegardener55 11 күн бұрын
I think part of why it’s clumping so bad is since your lawn is used to that small walk behind mower, the weight of the kubota weighs down and it cuts lower even with the deck at 5 inches, I see the same on my front yard when I use my riding mower every once a while on it. The toro recycler isn’t as heavy so it doesn’t sit in the grass

Last week I saw some mowers pull up to my neighbors house with one of those giant ride on mowers… mind you their yard is small, only 1-2 passes on one of those and it’s done. They spent more time maneuvering the thing around than they would just pulling their push mower off

I'm in Central Florida and last week we got rain almost every day later in the day. I missed my mow day of Thursday and cut Saturday and I also had a ton of growth, so much my lawn is yellow now. I did bag though as soon as I saw how much got cut. IDK why you didn't just rake it up and toss them in those trash bins!

Take those clippings and throw it in a compost bin. Take your greens, brown leaves or ripped cardboard and mix in a little soil and keep it moist, within 3 months you'll have some excellent soil. I built two compost bins (it's like a 35x35x35 areated bin made from old scrap 2x6s) I alternate between the two bins, turning it maybe once every two weeks.

19:02 Is the electric thatch rake an option to bring it all up? The best thing to do with such an overgrown lawn was to blow the first cuttings into small piles and start packing the brown leaf/lawn compost bags. The mulch blade is just making everything smaller and it will suffocate your root system.

I really have no idea why you did not rake it all up when you did the first cut, I bag every 6 or so mows and take it all to the local dump. Otherwise when I de-Thach in the fall I will have a bigger job on my hands. Looks like you really F up on a number of levels. Glad to see that us mere mortals aren't the only ones with lawn care problems.

A lot can be said for a bagging attachment once in a rare while when the grass gets so overgrown. The lost nitrogen from bagged clippings is negligible if you're using ferts anyway.

I kept thinking, grab a rake and problem solved. After the rain, I was thinking of a mechanical dethatcher. They rent those too.

I have Floratam for a lawn and when I mentioned the difficulty I was having getting the mower through it every week, I was told by the company, “We’ve been taking care of St. Augustine lawns only for over twenty years, and have only recommended dethatching twice. On both occasions, the customer said that was a really bad decision.” I have to mow every 3-4 days to keep to the 1/3 rule, but the thatch layer keeps thickening. Not sure what to do.

Got to give the mower a real test. Get a blower to make piles and get to bagg’n. That electric blower isn’t strong enough to move that grass around.

Lesson for today is always have a mower with a bagger. Ware is your recycler, super recycler and timemaster. The timemaster would have cleaned it up nice with how big the bag is

I know you say the St Augustine is best when it's cut long, but I cut my a little shorter because of all the moisture that gets trapped within. I don't cut to low, but deff. not really tall.

I fully understand. I have a mix of Saint Augustine and Palmetto because that’s all I can find at Home Depot and for some reason the grass doesn’t look as good as a Saint Augustine. I do not care for the Palmetto. And it seems like the palmetto doesn’t even grow as good as Saint Augustine, but I also bag mine it’s extra work but I don’t like having the clippings all over the yard and then it dries up looking brown

why didn't you just rake up the clippings and leave it for yard waste pickup? Also, tip for sod planting. Use wood golf tees to keep your seams together. Once the roots start taking, the wood tees will start pushing out and they won't damage your blades like garden stakes/staples will
