My reason for learning Chinese was to recover from cognitive impairment post covid. It worked extremely well which says a lot about how learning languages can protect the brain. Eventually I just loved it and wanted to know more about China.

As a Taiwanese whose native language is Mandarin Chinese I can easily understand every thing you say. You are amazing Steve!

If you have free time, you can also learn traditional characters. They are very fun and it will help you read calligraphy works that you see at important places like on steles, paintings, door signs, or monuments.

Steve is an inspiration. Without question in my opinion, I believe motivation (and capacity) is the most important determinant to ones success in learning a new language. This can be applied to most new skills to be honest. If one has a real reason to learn a language, they will do so more rapidly. If it's just a hobby, they may "get around to it" from time to time but the focus ad passion won't be there.

In fact a postgraduated person, commonly used about 3000 Chinese character. Many foreigners even Chinese do not realize that. So as you see, it is really helpful to spend more time to study Chinese on writing, reading and listening, instead of speaking. After knowing many characters then will easy to accumulate more words of phrase in Chinese. Pity, many people quite scared of Chinese writing. But the beauty of Chinese is writing, that's why it is called pictograph 象形文字.

You learned Mandarin for just one year and have reached your current level. That is amazing!

As we all know that there are 1/5 people who speak Chinese, there are many other Chinese teachers teaching Chinese well but at least she's qualified as Mandarin is her native language. I like Steve because he's very innovative, his hunger to learn new thing makes him looks young even at age 70+

I started to watch k-dramas in 2019 I think, then I moved to c-dramas, at the beginning I wanted to learn Korean but I realized that many dramas are now produced by Netflix but only the Korean ones are dubbed into other languages. So the reason why I'm learning the language is because I want to watch c-dramas without subtitles. I never thought learning Chinese would be that fun, I have been learning it for six months taking lessons twice a week, I'm not gonna lie besides that I rarely spent time studying, if anything my time goes to practicing writing hanzi. I'm aware though that I need to put more effort to learn quickly and not be left behind. Mandarin is challenging but it was so satisfying being able to listen to a sentence or read it and being able to understand that without a direct translation. I feel like I'm playing with a jigsaw puzzle.

Today is one year exactly since I started learning Chinese, I've listened to about 400 hours.. I watched the whole convo without subtitles and it's just a touch out of reach, I was able to follow along for much of it, and lost a bit in other parts, maybe around 60% understanding give or take, but if I had the transcript in lingq I could probably work with it. I'll keep coming back to this video as my yard stick.

Wow, Steve Kauffman is an outstanding polyglot, he amazes me anytime. His Chinese is excellent and let's say perfect. He's definitely a big inspiration for us, for so many language learners of course. He's still amazing, persistent and wise at the age of 77. How wonderful ❤!!! In my case, I don't like Chinese because it's a complete unfamiliar language and it's unrelated to what we know in the Western world or near-western world. Whether it's Mandarin or Cantonese, learning Chinese means knowing and getting involved into a different culture, a different world, really. Furthermore, it's absolutely tough to learn, whereas learning English, Spanish, French, Italian or any western language is much easier, more comfortable and it turns out to be straightforward to get used to it effortlessly.

If Chinese people can read Japanese to some extent, it is not only because Chinese characters (Kanji) are used in Japanese. The vocabulary of the modern Chinese language includes many kanji compound words created by the Japanese at the end of the 19th century. This is a great help to Chinese in reading and understanding Japanese.

我不知道，这是我的爱好。我的女朋友是中国人，所以可以跟她练习一下 I find combining two vague concepts into one to become a word very satisfying. I don't think people need a good reason to learn a language, it's good for you and your brain. A far better alternative to scrolling social media all day

I don’t speak Mandarin but I have materials for it the day I wish to tackle it. Hopefully one day I get stuff for Cantonese as well. But personally I see no reason why someone wouldn’t want to learn it. Sure it looks like it has some difficulties but that’s part of the fun.

Understood 90% of the conversation except for some words which I could easily guess. I learned Chinese from living in China currently for the past 10 years (never really studied it). After a while, it just took one of the years for it to click. Also, Steve called subtitles 文章 which means article or essay instead of 字幕. But his Chinese was pretty impressive none the less. Probably better than mine. Then again, I never really studied Chinese. Environment definitely helped. But what they said is right. You can be in a place and never learn the language. I put myself out there, joined events, proactively conversed with people, and had a girlfriend who spoke little English so we defaulted to Chinese. so that helped a lot. Of course, you won't get better unless you use it and Steve talking to Jenny was a way of practicing as well. I practiced my listening while he practiced his speaking. But the funny thing is, it isn't practice. It's USING the language. Practice is just the benefit of using it, not the other way around. When you change your mindset like that. It becomes easier.

I'd like to compare it to acoustic learners learning how to play the piano by ear and have a sneak peek at sheet music each time they get stuck.
