Located on Bruny Island in Tasmania, the remote off grid cabin was the first of two major building projects crafted by John Wardle Architects on the Waterview property. Initially, John focused on sustainability, rejuvenating farm values and the stewardship of the land before contemplating building anything. After planting nearly 10,000 trees with family, friends and staff, Shearers Quarters began to take form.
As a remote off grid cabin, the architecture and interior design of Shearers Quarters is a humble undertaking. With a strong emphasis placed upon sustainability and craft, Shearers Quarters tells a story of the past with a contemporary elevation and vision for the future. Celebrating corrugated iron in its exterior, the remote off grid cabin is completely sheathed internally in timber. A strong effort was made to incorporate sustainable building practices wherever possible - the living room’s timber material was sourced from nine different places after John put an ad in the local paper. Creatively, apple-box timber is also used to line the walls of the bedrooms.
As a remote off grid cabin, the home is relatively pared back, allowing the interior design to emerge as both balanced and simple. A colourful bookshelf and a long plank-like piece of joinery runs along the length of the living room - honouring John’s collection of eclectic objects - are the two main features within the interior space.
In addition to the two main properties situated on Waterview’s expansive land, John Wardle and his team have also built a myriad of structures along the landscape, allowing a sense of play and adventure to take hold across the property. This is just another way that the property of Waterview and the remote off grid cabin celebrate carpentry and craftsmanship. With much affection, Waterview and Shearers Quarters has become very much an integral part of John Wardle Architects and as an important way to honour craft and architectural practice.

It’s reassuring to know that in even such a remote part of Australia, the quality of skills and trades are still of a premium level. This is truly a very talented country with full of promise in the future and not to be looked upon as missing the boat skill wise.

I was lucky enough to spend 24 hours alone with this incredible building whilst working with JWA in 2013; to forensically explore and connect with its materiality and craftsmanship as well as witness its interaction with the wild and rugged context was one of the most memorable architectonic experiences of my life.

The best architect around imo. So understated, understands everything perfectly and doesn't design for instagram like so many architects here in Aus.

Love the use of multiple woods which are so seamlessly combined. They all look so good with one another. Sometimes I worry about combining different woods together but these are quite complimentary.

This house has such a tight well thought out program. The architect did such a great job being restrained. It has such a dramatic form and each part responds to each other and it's surroundings. This is very rare.

2:29 i like how they designed that window and a wall of bookshelves - it's cut in half and is visually striking. At first you think, oh why did they cut off half of the water views but then you realize that there is a house in front of them blocking those views and that wall with books blocks that. Clever!

Awesome. Only ONE major problem I see.......I'm not standing there in person taking in the beauty of it all! Cliche's like "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" are a dime a dozen but what happens when I look around and predominantly see nothing but asphalt, concrete buildings, and a few obligatory trees...in contrast to this stunning landscape.....my friends, grass doesn't even enter into it!!! Just beautiful.
