Power Plant Hung Boiler and Coal Silo Bay - Controlled Demolition, Inc.

Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, NorthStar Contracting Group, Inc. of Orlando, Florida) performs the preparation for and explosives felling of a hung boiler and coal silo bay in southern Georgia on December 5, 2021.
NorthStar selected CDI’s option of leaving the silo bay and integral silos in place during the implosion rather than pre-removing same, knowing that their large equipment would easily handle the increased height of the post-implosion debris pile on top of those silos.

This is classic CDI.... double shaped charges and double kickers on those steel columns, all connected with det cord. Front columns cut and back ones left to act as 'hinges' allowing structure to tip over in very controlled manner. Timing is everything and CDI can add another successful implosion to it's very long list. It never gets old.

In case you dont know..... The boiler does not sit on the steelwork. It is actually hung from the "ceiling". This is because it gets so hot that the thermal contraction and expansion is so large. It works better that way.

These guys really know what they are doing, they've got it down to an art! I, and several people below, would like an overview of how it's done. I'm going to see what I can find around the internet, though I don't want the secret service to have me down as someone who wants to cause...er... those bangy things. :-)

Back in the late 1990s, I worked special duty (police) at the demolition of the First Hawaiian Bank on S. King St in Honolulu. I had coffee before the take down with one of the Loizeaux family members. Interesting guy. He had just come from Hong Kong taking blocks of apartment buildings. The story of what they found in the buildings before demolition I will keep to myself. He may tell them someday.
