Story and review of Monk's landmark 1957 record for Riverside, a gamble for the label and a bridge too far for some of his sidemen.

I recently stumbled on your channel. I really like your videos. Concise yet packed with fascinating stories. Brilliant Corners has long been one of my favorites, yet i didn't know any of this. Great job!

Hey Allan! Finally going through this album for the 50s countdown, and honestly, this might be my favorite jazz album of all time. Usually with jazz records, as much as I love them, I always find them to be a bit similarly meandering to the point that most songs won’t immediately stand out to me. On here, every song not only sounds so distinct from one another, but also endlessly creative and innovative, I’ve never heard another jazz album that sounds quite like this one. Another amazing review man!

I’ve always found the album repellent yet intriguing. I’ll have to give it another listen with these back stories in mind.
