To think all of it could've been avoided if only Teasel hadn't pushed. Seeing Rambo initially talkative and even a bit jovial was the calm before the storm unleashed by those zealous deputies. Col. Trautman was 100% right. And that monologue at the end was just tear inducing, you can feel the raw power of grief and trauma. This is a true classic that'll never get old.

Teasel himself is tradic character when you look at him more deeply. Korean Veteran. That was brutal fighting but barely recognized in the U.S. Vietnam was first war that was broad casted live. Most Korean Veterans felt their suffering and agony was disregarded. At that point PTSD was not really known. It was aftermath of Vietnam that studies broke thru identifying and treatment. Teasel was at point of film suffered his own Traumas without help for 30 years. Then became unhealthy way dealing with John Rambo. Mistreament of veterans are abhorrent for a nation that is one of the most powerful nations in the world that has fought for ideals of democracy and liberties. But sad fact it, most other part of the world soldiers are nothing but expedable tools that can be disregarded when they cannot fight anymore they are left to deal things alone. Many parts of the world veteran's suffering for traumas are seen weak and weakness is many parts of the world is considered taboo. At least in western countires PTSD and trauma works are recognized and seen necessary. I am glad of that. I don't want anyone go thru what my grandpa had to go thru: 4 years in service as medic in WW2. While nation rebuilt, nightmares ate his last bit of consitution and after 7 years of constant nigthmares he shot himself with his service rifle.

@@thejamppa Truth. The original novel serves as a character study for Teasel while Rambo is more murderous, killing civilians and law enforcement indiscriminately. The philosophical nuances of both men are at the forefront, inevitably leading to a mutually lethal confrontation as both refuse to even slightly back off or compromise. It all shows that in war be it global or localized there are no winners even if one survives.

You both asked valid questions. Here's an explanation for much of what you asked about... This movie covered at least two social issues: 1. PTSD with Vietnam War veterans (back then they called it "Delayed Stress Syndrome"), and 2. police brutality and corruption especially in remote American towns. (and police hostility towards homeless war veteran "drifters"). The height of the Vietnam War was during the height of America's civil rights and youth anti-war movements of the 1960s - 70s (the "hippie" era). The sentiment of the time was the young generations' rejection of the cold war warmongering tendencies, and this resulted in unfair hositilites and protesting against the SOLDIERS THEMSELVES (when the blame should have been on the policymakers). Unlike previous wars, in which soldiers' average age was in their late 20's, the average age of a soldier serving in Vietnam was about 19, and early computerized management systems led to servicemen shifting from place to place so quickly that these very young/impressionable soldiers didn't always have enough time to develop healthy emotional bonds with their teammates. Chemical weapons like "Agent Orange" and 10-4-5 T were used to poison the jungles so close to the troops that many died of cancer after the war (including Rambo's closest friends). Many of the soldiers were in constant jungle warfare months at a time, surviving against highly trained/experienced enemy soldiers (even children trained as soldiers) with jungle stealth warfare skills, often given contoversial/questionable orders in combat. When the US left, they didn't exactly call it a war and DIDNT HAVE ANY of the same victorious welcoming home for troops in previous wars (celebrations, parades etc.). Instead, soldiers came home to protests by anti-war groups, fuled by stories of war crimes etc. becuase so much was happening to civilians in Vietnamese villages (causing feelings of suppressed guilt). To make matters worse, there were so few civilian employment opportunities for anyone with military backgrounds, so many soon ended up broke and homeless for years, (living in cardboard boxes in alleys of major cities, begging on streetcorners). Even worse, when many developed cancer from exposure to the chemical weaponry, there were obstacles and bureaucracy that put so many procedural delays in getting veteran benefits paid to them, that many of them waited for years and died before ever recieving their benefits. Laws were passed many years later FORCING society to provide employment opportunities for veterans, but for many it was too late. PTSD was not really a well known public phenomena until the 1980''s, and the Vietnam War memorial in Washington DC wasn't built until about a decade after the war. Overall, the disgraceful mistreatment of our Vietnam war veterans has been a well known subject for a long time. Rambo's actions (destroying the town) was simply his way of using his "survival mode" military tactics to flush out and defeat "his enemy" the only way he knows how, from his training. (Jungle warfare became his ideal fighting environment, they provoked him to the point which his instincts turned his mind into that "mode" .) Rambo felt humiliated because the sherrif expected him to walk 30 miles in the rain to a diner when he had every right as a citizen to eat at any restaurant in the country he proudly served in the war. Being taken into police custody at the end of the movie was UNAVOIDABLE, because even though he didn't actually kill anyone, he still would have expected to be charged with destruction of property, assault, and wreckless endangerment. To your question about why the Colenol let Rambo get arrested and taken into custody: you have to understand that in the USA, the government is NOT structured in any way that has the military "ranked above" the police. Instead, law enforcement exists "side by side" with the military, NOT underneath it. In fact, the police can arrest anyone in the military just the same as a civilian, because the national army and even local state militias do not have "authority over" the police. When sherrif Teasle was shouting and disrespecting Colenol Trautman, there is nothing the colonel could do about it, because he is not a commanding officer over the police force. Its totally a separate department, with separate functions. And in the US, there isn't any law against "professional discourtesy". As disrespectful as the sherrif was, he wasnt committing a crime, (he was just exercising his freedom of speech in a very ugly way). In the US, there really is no "law" against being disrespectful (except perhaps against a judge during a courtroom session, where you CAN BE punished with some jail time or fines for "contempt of court".) The character of John Rambo is one of a very patriotic veteran (winner of NUMEROUS awards/medals of honor) tragically torn by distrust of a government that was disloyal and ungrateful to the veterans, his PTSD from being tortured in the prison camp he escaped from, and loss of all of his teammmates that served with him. The rest of the movies connect to his character in this way.

Hi guys love your content, the unfortunate thing in America with the Vietnam war was that most Americans did not believe in the war. Unfortunately they mistreated the soldiers who had no choice but to fight in the war badly when they came back. During those times PTSD was not a thing so most people didn't understand what was happening to the soldiers returning home. Just like Rambo described it it horrific imagines that play in his mind everyday. It hard for him to tell the difference between what happened a long time ago and what is happening now, or friends from enemies. The sheriff was inflated with ego and it was simply a case of abuse of power. Rambo went back to the town because he was being bullied by the sheriff and instead of taking it he was going to make a stand and returns to eat in the town as he had the right to do. The sheriff like he said he was the law so he gets to decide who can eat Walk in what he felt was his town. He felt like he had the right to say who can eat, sleep and live in his town which is wrong. Rambo told the sheriff to let it go or he'll give him a war he wouldn't believe and that's unfortunately for the town is just what he did. I'm sure you guys would enjoy the other Rambo movies in the series, have a great weekend guys.

The Vietnam War was a very controversial war and unfortunately the veterans of that war were not treated very well when they returned to America. We should have never been there ; it was an undeclared conflict; it divided the country in the 60's. We had never really encountered warfare like it the Vietcong were vicious. My father was a Vietnam Vet he didnt fair very well when he returned home. I wasnt raised with him my mother had left him while pregnant with me and ultimately remarried to my stepfather. He came back from Vietnam addicted to Heroin and sufferred horrible PSTD. He never recovered unfortunately died a rageful severely addicted person in 1994. I went to his funeral it was a very sad and strange day. I didnt ever get the chance to know him I always only knew of him. Always got bday cards I suspect they were sent by another family member on his behalf. My mother recieved child support payments that his assigned guardian made sure was sent to my mother. On his death he named me as a beneficiary to his life insurance which helped me during college. It is a weird reality I had a father I never knew he did what he could from a distance all the while fighting demons that I will never fully understand. There are more than a few just like me out here in America. This movie is a bit over done with the violence and the fantasy survivalist skills but the ending and that last bit of dialogue is as brutal and honest as it can get for the vets of the Vietnam War. Ive always advocated for our military and always stated to who ever would hear me that we can disagree about a war or conflict, but we should never take that disagreement out on our men and women in the military...ever.

Before the movie, as you spoke of your expectations for this film, I thought you were describing another amazing series from this same star, Sylvester Stallone, "Rocky." I strongly recommend that you react to those movies as soon as you can. Though Stallone plays a boxer, these are not just fighting/sports movies, but also romantic love stories as well. The "Rocky" series is more complex and subtle than "Rambo" but every bit as dramatic and compelling.

Many have explained why Vietnam Veterans had suffered so much, both in the war and when they returned. I would like to point out the strategy - why Rambo did what he did at the town. 1 - blow up the gas station. This will cause much distraction and put the town into a state of emergency. This will make things less complicated, with fewer random civilians. 2 - destroy the local electricity. This creates more darkness, allowing Rambo to move undetected. 3 - destroy the "armory" (gun store). This causes more distraction, and also make less weapons & ammo available to the enemy. 4 - shoot up the police station. He focuses on destroying lights, so he can get in there unnoticed, and cause confusion and stress on the enemy, and hopefully make the enemy move so he can detect him and take him out. Each of these targets were also key enemy supplies - fuel, electricity, weapons & ammo. He systematically inflicted fear, darkness, paralysis, confusion and weakness on them. He was crippling enemy forces before he went in for the kill. It was the "war he wouldn't believe"

Stallone actually did the fall from the cliff into the tree and broke a rib or two. The tarp he wears as a jacket in the forest was the most protected prop piece in the film. Stallone found that in the forest and decided to use it for the film and since he found it on the ground they couldn’t duplicate it so every night it was locked up. The speech by Rambo at the end of the movie is one of the best speeches ever. The Sheriff was a war veteran also but from a different war and he wasn’t treated well coming back. Rambo was suffering from PTSD which wasn’t known back then. They just called it “Shell Shock” and wrote them off. Rambo didn’t know how to acclimate to regular life after they made him a killing machine. Rambo killed a wild boar(pig) in the forest for food. Rambo destroying the gas station and ammo store was part of warfare. Take out the enemies supplies. The original ending had Troutman shooting Rambo in the police station basically putting Rambo out of his misery.

The Rambo movies become increasingly action centered and feel less serious than "First Blood," but they all have a basis serious issues that Sylvester Stallone wanted to raise public awareness about at the time. "First Blood" was about PTSD and hostility and contempt that Vietnam vets were treated when they returned home, "Rambo"/"Rambo 2" was about the concern that, in its haste to wash its hand of the unpopular war, the U.S. had abandoned M.I.A.s (MIssing In Action)/P.O.W.s (Prisoners Of War) in Southeast Asia, "Rambo 3" was about the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, "Rambo"/"Rambo 4" was about the Myanmar Gen0cide, and "Last Blood"/"Rambo 5" was about ruthless human and drug trafficking cartels.

In the Vietnam War, your could go for long periods without experiencing open combat while still seeing many of your friends being killed or crippled by booby traps that were set by people who lied to your face and claimed to be innocent friendlies. Because of this, there was nowhere you could turn off the hyper vigilance - the paranoia - that you relied on to keep yourself alive. You constantly felt threatened while you were there, and if you did get to return stateside, the hatred the American public felt for the military made you continue to feel threatened even at home. This constant unrelieved stress and the lack of support from your own government and your own people could sometimes lead to violent mental breakdowns which the press would then exploit for ratings or for self righteousness egotism. This built a generalized image of all Vietnam vets as dangerous, morally and mentally unhinged time bombs ready to explode and randomly maim and kill innocent people. That image and the hostility, contempt and disrespect it encouraged stuck for more than a decade. That made it much more difficult for vets to seek help, and it led to more service members' lives continuing to be lost years after the war. As an aside, I'd like to mentioned that when Audie Murphy (who became famous for receiving every award for valor in combat an American soldier could be given in WW2) saw how Vietnam vets were being treated he spoke out publicly about his own struggles with PTSD in the hope that it would increase public awareness and understanding and make it easier for vets to get the help they needed.

This movie can be very confusing to people who only know the US as it is now where veterans are treated with respect. Vietnam was a very unpopular war and instead of being welcomed home like heroes as the WW2 vets were they were treated like dangerous baby killing psychos. Eventually attitudes changed and a large part of the hero worship vets today get is because of the shame of how these guys were treated.

First Blood is not based on a real story. however, there are many real-life things that did happen that the movie talks about... like the Vietnam veterans being treated terribly by some American citizens after they came home. many of them were spat on by protesters and discriminated against... just like in the movie. the Sherrif didn't want Rambo in his town just because he was a Vietnam vet. that war caused a major divide in our country at that time. Edit: Also, Rambo didn't start that war just because he was denied something to eat... it was really about him getting fed up with being discriminated against for being a Vietnam vet.

John Rambo was a very broken and sad man. He gave everything for his country and then that same country tossed him aside once he was no longer useful. Also The Reasons for Hating it was the Vietnam war was one of the first wars to be played out in peoples homes (on their televisions). This meant that it was scrutinized by the public far more than had previous wars. The general public had no stomach for the realities of war, such as dying children and mass murders etc. coupled with the fact that most people didnt see why the US army was involved in the first place--with such huge losses. This was a recipe for dissent amongst the average American.

People were mean to our Soldiers when they returned from that war. They called them baby killers because of the bombs they laid on the enemies. There were a lot of them who came home and were homeless - some just never wanted to live in a home or be part of the establishment again. Who can blame them. Many were just like Hippies which were also hated esp in small redneck towns like this one. Some of it was jealousy, the Soldiers were skilled and the rednecks were just bullies to them because they were jealous of them. A drifter is a person without a home, he/she goes place to place. They are often blamed for crimes in the towns because they are an easy mark. The war traumatized many of our Soldiers and this movie was speaking out against the way ppl like this sherrif were treating them.

Fun facts: Rambo knew exactly what he was doing when he got back to the town with the .50 caliber machine gun. He blew up the gas station so they would not have any gas. Then he cut their power so the whole city would be in the dark. Then he went to the gun store and blew up all their ammo, and it was also a distraction. All because of some stupid red neck cop who wanted to act like a jerk and a tough guy to a veteran. The cop saw Rambo as an unwashed bum that he did not want in his town, and it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his life.

Viet nam veterans were treated poorly after the war....shameful...but it happened... The book is different from the movie by far.....the creative license used in the movie i think made it better...

RAIDERS of the LOST ARK If it's ACTION you want, you should hurry up and get to, THE... GREATEST ACTION ADVENTURE MOVIE ever put to celluloid. If you want the greatest 'orchestrated' action movie ever, Mad Max FURY ROAD..... but not before watching MAD MAX and ROAD WARRIOR.✌✌ 2nd best, action-christmas movie....... LEATHAL WEAPON 1984. If you are interested in Viet Nam movies you should really watch PLATOON 1986 or Chuck Norris in MISSING IN ACTION 1 and 2 1984-5.

Back in those days, the leftists had influence over our young that pushed a lot of political hate onto our military. When I got out of the Navy in 1970, I made sure to wear civies going home. When this movie came out 12 years later, it brought it all back to me. I think back on it with anger mainly toward the universities and media. I don't remember law enforcement being on the side of the left. What got the sheriff going against Rambo is that he most likely thought of him as being a left-wing hippy. They were known as being physically unkempt (needing haircuts and showers) as well as disrespecting the flag by wearing it on their clothing; many times on the seat of their pants. He didn't find out Rambo was ex-military until afterwards.

This is said a hundred times, but the book is better, especially explaining the Sheriff. they are both combat Vets the Sheriff is a Korean War Vet..... this movie kinda takes for granted you know about the politics of the era. If the Sheriff and Rambo would have just had lunch together and talked they would have found they had much in common. But their pride prevents that. The Sheriff sees his long hair and assumes he's a "Winter Soldier" type or perhaps stolen valor. Many peacenik hippie types would wear USGI jackets etc... all the while protesting against the military. Ultimately this movie is about teh failure to communicate between two generation of vets that should be talking to each other, but both suffered from injured pride. In the book neither the Sheriff or Rambo is a particular good or bad guy. .just both troubled. Even though the book is a better story, the movie was hugely important and changes made were probably required to make it a successful movie. It helped many people in the US rethink how the Vietnam veterans were treated, and for that I'm just as happy they changed it.

In the book Rambo tracks down and slaughters everyone he comes in contact with. He was definitely psycho.
