Better known as a theorist than a composer in his own lifetime, Vicente Lusitano is also possibly the first mixed-race musician to have a collection of his works published (he is described as mestizo in a posthumous source). His 1551 Liber primus epigramatum contains a number of works based on Josquin motets, of which the eight-voice Inviolata is arguably his crowning achievement. Expanding Josquin’s original five voices to eight, Lusitano preserves the plainchant-derived canon at the heart of the motet, spinning mesmerising webs of polyphony around it which culminate in the almost hypnotic waves of repetition that begin the final section.
TEXT
Inviolate, whole and chaste are you, Mary: you are the shining gate of heaven. O kind mother, dearest to Christ, accept our faithful hymns of praise. To you our hearts and lips cry out: may our souls and bodies be pure. Through your prayers' sweet sounds grant us forgiveness for ever. O kindly one! O Queen! O Mary! you alone remain inviolate.

Interesting music. I too am here because of the BBC article. I’ve been listening to classical music for over 50 years, but I confess that I had never heard of Lusitano. I’m glad to have made his acquaintance.

Vicente Lusitano is well known among portuguese early music lovers. Having his story told by BBC made him more well known world wide. Great performance!

I was just taking a break from reviewing the meltdown of the financial markets and came across this recording from reading a story about Lusitano on the BBC website, and suffice it to say, I feel better...the complexity and clarity of the message is brilliant, and timeless...

What I particularly like about The Marian Consort videos, in addition to the excellent vocal performance, is the quality of the sound and video recording. Everything is authentic and honest, which can't be said for some other well-known vocal ensembles. Thanks go to all involved.

It doesn't mean it was based on racism. Many white composers were forgotten as well. Even Vivaldi or Monteverdi were rediscovered centuries after their lifetime. Even today, around the world, portuguese composers are not very well known. Portuguese History is not known outside Portugal. If we stop seeing History as racist we Will Discover a lot of surprising stories. Is the same for women. If you look well there were a lot of extraordinary women in History too. The problem is that man generally prefere war type subjects and feminists hate to speak about powerful women of the past, because those incredible ladies doesn't fit their narrative. History is complex. If we don't judged to much, we ll surprise ourselves.

I, like many have read the BBC article. I read it months ago, but just now found my way to this wonderful performance. Makes you wonder how many other treasures have been lost to time. Music which we will never be blessed to hear. Thank you for keeping this man’s music alive. Bravo 👏🏽

As in BIP300's comment - I was made aware of this composer, his life, and our ignorance of the great work he achieved, in his time. Great thanks must go to he people who have researched, recovered, promoted and performed this composer's works for all music lovers to benefit and appreciate. Thank you all and, of course the BBC for their eclectic coverage of cultural, artistic and historical topics - always educational.

I thank the Most High for this day because I have now been introduced to two of the World's greatest composers, M. Joseph Boulogne and Sr. Vincente Lusitano. The return of their respective genius from the banishment and obscurity imposed upon it by intellectual cowards enriches the lives of all humanity. Looking at the timeline of their presence, I wonder how many of the "great masters," to whom we have been exposed were actually influenced by the great masters that no one wanted us to know existed?

This is wonderful music and beautifully performed; until this Ash Wednesday I had never heard of Lusitano( I’m fairly knowledgeable about music) when a short, very moving, work of his was performed at St James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago. This Inviolata is an even better piece.

Turned on by a BBC article, thanks to internet et all, 10 seconds later I'm listening to this fantastic performance. This composer was really something !!! Heu me domine sounds so modern. On a critical note to the conductor: would using the volume on the different parts make it more more interesting(sorry for my English)

Simplesmente sublime a obra desse nosso irmão negro! Imaginem o que deve ter sofrido de preconceitos se mesmo hoje ainda somos humilhados nesse triste Portugal. Mas o valor da obra de Lusitano é perene e universal. Que bom possamos reconhece-la e difundi-la.

In addition to all the great Black jazz composers there were a lot of great symphonic “Classical “black composers in the USA who were and alas! still underperformed; American composers get little recognition and black composers get less and Black women composers the least -I live in Chicago where the marvelous Florence Price lived and worked and she and many others are almost ignored.
