The Thematic Saga begins with Shadow of the Past! I am taking a thematic approach to all the Lord of the Rings Saga quests in order, using the complete card pool. In this quest we see the hobbits set out on their adventure as they journey across The Shire and try to make on to the Buckleberry Ferry before a black rider finds them.

Just bought my first revised core set 3 weeks ago and i really love this game. I love your playthroughs and please keep up the videos as well. Hoping to expand to the sagas someday soon.

Excellent as ever, I'm glad we did not have to wait too long into the new year. That deck looks a lot of fun. It might be time to give up on pipeweed & get singing.

Well played Chad! This deck is nuts. It's like Rosie heard mention of a "Tower of Sam" deck, and was like, "Hold my beer, I've got a song or two for you!" Also really liked the fact that 2 x Song of Battle is in the deck but absolutely no Tactics cards in the deck. So good.

I am glad you liked it. I was nervous that folks might not like having Rosie as a hero for the start of this campaign since she was not 'one of the fellowship'. But, I think it works really well.

This was an interesting playthrough to watch! As a new player I have been struggling with this quest. I’m not sure if I’m just bad at the game or bad at deckbuilding. I’ve been trying it two handed and get swarmed with encounter cards

thank you. There is a good balance that has to be met to beat this one. The best cards that will help you are ones that add willpower. You want to be able to pass Hide tests, so Protector of Lorien, Eowyn, Faramir, anything that can boost your WP is great for this quest. Gildor's Council is thematic and helps reduce the number of encounter cards.

Been a hot minute since I've played, but I'm confused on the MotK contract. The setup states you cannot choose more than 2 heroes and then you pick an ally to become a hero bringing you back to a total of 3 heroes. But here you have 3 heroes and the MotK ally. So, am I missing something? I thought you could only have 3 heroes total even with the MotK contract.

The Frodo Fellowship hero is part of the Saga Quests (Fellowship Sphere). So he does not count as part of your deck-building restrictions since he is added to your hero line-up as part of the quest setup.

I think I found a powerful use for Stand and Fight? Can you really pay 0 to put Gildor Inglorion back into play (assuming you took him for the campaign)? Objective-Ally with no printed cost, text block says to place in discard pile at the end of the round unless first player pays a Fellowship resource…not bad for a 3-2-3-3 card!

Unfortunately that will not work. Stand and Fight says the card must belong to a sphere, and Gildor does not. This is the same reason you cannot use S&F to get ally Gandalf or any neutral card. Those darn designers keep us from having too much fun!

@@COTRPodcast Thanks for clarifying! I definitely misread it, thought it meant “any ally” and have used it for Gandalf in the past…oops! The card text is quite indirect for that intended meaning. I tried to make him Gildor the Glorious, but he shall forever remain Gildor Inglorion. (At least, this version of him)

I have a question about the Black Rider. Let's say a Black Rider is revealed from the encounter deck during the staging step, and the player that drew it fails the Hide test. According to the quest cards, "When a player fails a Hide test, each Nazgul enemy in the staging area engages that player." Am I correct in thinking that the Black Rider that was just revealed is not actually in the staging area at this point, and therefore only Nazgul enemies that were already in the staging area when the card was revealed engage the player?

unfortunately, you are not correct but don't be too hard on yourself, the quest card is poorly written. The enemy is in the staging area during the Hide test and will come get you. Caleb ruled this way. The best way the community understands it is: Hide X is not triggered until the Black Rider is in the staging area. This is different than Doomed X, which triggers when the card is revealed prior to entering the SA. So...basically the designer intent is yes, it engages you.

At 23:20 shouldn't you have advanced to stage 2? 3 extra progress, only needed 1 to clear Gather Information, Bag End was in the Victory Display

When a side quest is the active quest any extra progress is wasted basically. It does not go on the main quest.

Do you stick to 50 player cards? Your RingsDB profile for this deck seems to have more. Are the player cards from the SAGA not counted towards the 50 player deck limit? UPDATE: Looks like I've been playing with a firm 50 card deck for some reason. I didn't realize I could have more. Not sure why that is stuck in my head.

I can understand why, the rulebook isn’t super clear. But you can have more than 50 cards. Also any Boons you earn and put in your deck do not count against your 50 card limit and you should include 50 player cards. Thanks for watching.
