Just to clarify this is a loopstation battle not a beatbox battle. they are kinda like sub genres. In this they use a loopstation to record and loop sounds on the spot as well as modify sounds. In a beatbox battle its all just your vocals

the machines they use on the tables have fx programs in them. so they can add things like autotune and reverb. it's called an RC-505 loop station.

Doug E. Fresh did a speech and award presentation at the American Beatbox Championship in 2017. There's a video of it (with only 587 views? that's criminal). Plenty of love given and received. Also, an excellent history lesson that made me miss my youth.

Doug E-Fresh popularized it and made it what is known as Beat-Boxing turning it into a Hip-Hop element, but the musical percussion with the mouth etc existed way before he was born. Chinese traditions, Indian traditions, African traditions etc. But yeah, thanks to him the style of music has been exposed to us.
