In this episode of Theme Park Destination, we explore the only place where you can see the stars and ride the movies: Universal Studios Florida! Join us as we look at the last 30 years of the theme park inspired by movies and television, starting from its original concept in the early 1980s, the park’s disastrous grand opening in 1990, its rise in popularity through the ’90s, the removal of the original attractions and decline throughout the 2000s, and its rises once again due to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in the 2010s!

I was lucky enough to have been on some of the retired rides. Earthquake, Twister, Jaws, Terminator 3D, Back to the Future and Kongfrontation. They were absolutely fantastic and it makes me sad they took them away. Jaws was absolutely terrifying for me, having sat on the left side of the boat right where most of the closest sharks popped up but I loved it.

I love Universal, I am an annual passholder. Can’t help to think it’s still missing “something”. It doesn’t have the same magic as it did back in the day with Jaws, King Kong, Back to the Future, the backlot tour (in my opinion). The Harry Potter attractions are brilliant but I will never get over losing Jaws.

Watching this video makes me miss the Universal from my childhood. Kongfrontation, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and everything else no longer there made the park truly unique. Now it’s filled with multiple screen rides that all feel the same. I still love Universal, but man has it changed.

As a 90's kid, and parent today. I would love to see a re launch. The blue man group sound stage was not interesting to me. I would love to see a double dare , And other Nickelodeon attractions.

right Nickelodeon has little to no presence in Orlando these days or really no presence in theme parks at all. i mean they have Nickelodeon Universe at some malls which is nice but still, its unfortunate how Nickelodeon doesnt have much of a presence in theme parks anymore😭

Honestly it’s because like many TV stations these days, they mostly suck! Nickelodeon’s best days were from Ren and Stimpy (1991) all the way until Rocket Power (1999). After that wonderful decade, in my humble opinion, started the decline for Nickelodeon. A couple of good shows here and there, Spongebob being obvious, Jimmy Neutron too, but thats it! They have nothing now! Spongebob is NOT what it used to be. Everything is all about political correctness, not offending anybody, that it sucked the life out of the cartoons. Period. We just took our son to Disney and Universal for his first time. Universal was his favorite, it’s always been mine as well. It has changed so much since I was there in the early 90’s. I told him I wish we could get in the Delorean and go back to early Universal days to show him when it was at its finest. Still great, just not the same at all. At least ET was still there.

Watching this makes you realize how many changes the original Universal Studios Florida park has gone through in a relatively short amount of time. I like a lot of the newer stuff, but I hope ET remains.

There was something so magical about walking through that arch past the Universal globe as a kid, knowing you’re about to spend a whole day & night experiencing everything possible. At the end of the day, when almost all the other people had left & most the rides shut down for the night, it felt so strangely peaceful just walking around the quieted near-empty City Walk surrounded by the hum of insects & fountains flowing 🌽

The Grinch stole Christmas, then we brought it back. We discovered a mummy, then took you into his tomb. Visit Universal theme parks, around the world. And experience the thrill! Ride the movies! As a Florida resident I feel you. Universal Orlando is great and I love it, and I get that it's the company's flagship, but these days it's become such a giant money machine. Feels like a miniature Las Vegas. Always liked the smaller and more quaint Hollywood park more.

The most nostalgic place in the world for me and my family. My wife and I have been passholders for nearly 8 years. I’ve been going to HHN as often as I can since 2001 and now it’s a family tradition with my cousins, brother and sister-in-law. It’s just a great place without all the cash grabbing nonsense of Disney. Not to mention, it just a more adult oriented park and we don’t have kids. thankfully, I was very fortunate that our parents were able to take us to UNIVERSAL many times when we were kids. Got to ride all the classics multiple times, and watch the Park change.

Done Well!! I had no idea I rode Jaws during tech rehearsals, I rode Jaws on Aug 16, 1993!!! Got to the USF around 1-2 pm and they parked us in the main road around the lot within feet of the Studio Arch and stayed til closing.

I’m so glad I have fond memories of visiting Universal Studios in the mid 90s. I feel like this was when the park was at its prime. 2012 - now should be referred to as the “Era of Screens”.

Universal is the GOAT. Disney has been up and down through the decades. The past 10 years Disney has changed their model from attracting their traditional locals and weekend visitors to trying to attract people to come and stay for week long trips where u stay in their resorts and overcharge you, yet the experience isn't the same. They got rid of free fast passes and it's just not the same. I love Disney for the nostalgia, and for my kids, but universal and their parks are killing it now, better value, better customer service, overall better product, I love me some universal 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

HUGE book recommendation: Jerry Green's "25 Years Inside Universal...". It completely changed my view on so-called "odd attractions" in USO early days. And, how the enjoyment of guests and team members is often the interaction, humor, and story.

Fast & Furious: Supercharged would've been much better if it were just a launched dueling coaster, like West Coast Racers at Six Flags Magic Mountain for example.

The rides I rode back in 2019 I rode Spider-Man, Skull Island Reign of Kong, Fast and Furious Supercharged, Hulk, Revenge of the Mummy, some of the stuff at the Harry Potter Area, Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket, Jimmy Fallon, Transformers, Dudley Do Ripsaw Falls, Dr Dooms Fear Fall and Poseidon I did go before 2018 though
