A look at Bullfrog's classic theme park business simulator first released in 1994, this is the 1995 PS1 version. Which included an extra 3D view mode, that allowed you to walk around your built part in 3D. Randomised Gaming's own editor Riven gives his thoughts on the game and explains how it works. Seeing as it's a surprisingly complex game in places, that doesn't have a huge amount of music. As with all the CD based ports it includes an opening CGI intro, along with CGI videos for most of the rides and key events in-game.
A hugely impressive title on release, Theme Park's games design has been borrowed by all the major titles in the genre. While titles like RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, may have now surpassed Theme Park in the design department, there's no doubting which game RollerCoaster Tycoon was based on.
Bullfrog had a great sense of humour too when developing the game which can be seen in the cartoon look and feel of all the rides and characters. The aim is to build up a successful Theme Park, then sell it off and repeat it all over again by starting another one up in a different part of the world. You do this by building up your park, investing in rides and staff and making your park as nice as possible. Keeping the park clean, the rides working and having security boot out any trouble makers, such as the biker thugs when they turn up.
While the fact you couldn't really choose where to start in the world from the get go was a mistake. There was also little reason to start a park elsewhere in the world either. As the original version of the game had no regional changes, however some late ports such as the SNES, Mega Drive (Snow and desert landscapes) and Nintendo DS (some regional shops, coffee shop becomes Tea bus in UK) did.
It's as fun now as it was on release and while the game does have a few annoying bugs. Punters getting stuck in the park and the game crashing when you build your park too big. It's hard not to spend hours building up your empire and seeing your park thrive or fail, based on how well you built it. A modern port would be great, but it seems unlikely ever to happen. Due to all the different changes between versions, there isn't one definitive release. The most recent port is the Nintendo DS one which EA Japan did.

In the mid 90s, there was a Blockbuster store pretty close by, and they had games available to rent. One of the games I rented was Theme Park for the Megadrive, and I absolutely adored it at the time. :D

I remember playing this game and going into a first person like thing to check the map, it turned out that you can go into first person while the demo map plays while you sit on the Menu for too long, this will allow you to explore the demo map and if you exit first person, you can actually work on the demo map. I have searched everywhere to see if this feature actually existed and no-one has seen it as far as I am aware, but I swear down it was a real feature as I used to mess with it all the time.

It was hugely popular in the 90s here in the United Kingdom, but that was a long time ago now. Electronic Arts are also very very bad at re-releasing their older games. The last port was on the Nintendo DS and that was done by EA's now shut down Japanese arm.

There are lots of versions of the main game the website Gamefaqs should list them all, one of the more interesting version was the Japanese Saturn and PS1 alternative version called Shin Theme Park, which swapped out the rides for more Japanese themed one, they also had the standard versions on the same consoles. The Nintendo DS version was the last port to date of the original game and it really was a great port on the system. Started on the Amiga and PC, we first played the Amiga A500 version which was somewhat buggy to say the least.

I recently got the dos-Version again (I loved to play it when I was a kid on our old Win95 PC), I forgot how challenging this was. It took me hours of getting bankrupt and watching youtube videos and googleing the manual to find out what I was doing wrong. I can't believe I played it alright when I was in primary school. Nevertheless. I would simply love to have a new game like this in recent days. I don't necessarily need much better graphics (well, I think like the latest Anno 1800 would be cool but I'm still totally fine with pixel graphics in games like these) But a less buggy and crashing version, also not with a dos-emulator and a more intuitive GUI would be nice. I know there are some similar newer games like the latest roller coaster tycoon or all these annoying in app purchasing games but none of these have the economy part. They may look fine but in the end, all you can do with these is build a cool park without being in danger of hanging yourself because of brankruptsy (which is so macrabre that I love it). So with the missing economy part, the thrill of failing is missing aswell.

The fact you could fail in this, reflected the real business world far more and learning, how to balance your park to make it successful was part of the game, something later games lacked. There was some dark elements in this as you say with a macabre nature it, the later console versions showed a figure jumping out of the window if you went bust. Very dark British humour from Bullfrog, something that likely wouldn't be allowed in the modern era. As it's not really a subject that should be shown in such a manner and may not be accepted by rating boards either.

The biggest thing that gets people is the loan interest as you have to take out a loan at the start and that heavily cuts into your balance each month. It's a good idea to only take out small loans and pay them back as quickly as possible once your park can stand on its own two feet from the income

You turn the pumps to increase the amount of money you send or not on research, the research charge is at the end of every month. What's not told to the player is that each new item (ride, shop, staff member) requires a set amount of money is spent in research before unlocking. We always maxed research for a few months as putting a little into research, takes far too long to unlock anything. In some cases it case take 6 months of research to unlock a new item even at max. (Are tactic was to max research in one section for a few months as soon as you unlock something turn off the research.) As an example ride A will require 20,000 in research in total to unlock ride B will need 40,000, but this is never shown to the player.

What do you need to know? The aim is to buy back all your shares as quickly as possible so your creditors don't take a chunk of your revenue each year. Buying all the shares plays a special intro as well, as you then have complete control of the park.
