Jaws The Ride is a theme park attraction at Universal Studios Japan and formerly at Universal Studios Florida. Based upon the films of the same name, the attraction places guests aboard tour boats for what should be a leisurely tour of Amity Harbor but instead becomes a harrowing chase between the craft and a great white shark. In this video we take a look at the original attraction on the studio tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, the failure and closure of the attraction when it first opened, the success of the second version built, and the closure of the Florida version for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley.

Really enjoyed the video! - always wondered if they were to bring it back, like Skull Island, what kind of changes do you think they could make to the ride?
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Honestly, I don't know what type of changes I would make. Not trying to sound like a theme park purist but Jaws was already a pretty good ride with the layout it had in place. If anything I would probably upgrade the sharks if possible, I'm sure the technology has improved since 1992.

Theme Park History Absolutely! If I had to see anything, I would have loved to have seen the original ‘Shark grabs boat’ scene attempted again with updated technology for the sharks, think that would have been really scary if done well.
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
I think they would be able to get that work today. I mean they're able to connect the launch tracks on Harry Potter and Escape from Gringotts, how hard is it to attach a shark to a boat! They could also do something where the boat starts to "sink" after being bit by the shark.

The only way I could see it making some form of comeback would be if a remake was made, like with King Kong. But due to the original is still seen as a masterpiece (which it is), it probably won't happen.

I thought the same thing Paul, figuring I was old and complaining about everything wrong with Universal. But I think many agree Universal has lost it's touch since Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. You know there's something wrong with your park with over half of them are screen based.

Jaws scared the crap out of me as a kid. But what a brilliant ride from start to finish. Insane queues back in the day though (but worth it!). Only topped by 20 thousand leagues I think, which was the only attraction across all the parks that we skipped entirely due to the lines! It too closed a couple years later, so never did get to ride that one!
@ThemeParkHistory

It was my favorite ride as kid. Even though I knew it was only an attraction, the water wasn't that deep and the sharks weren't real, I always had this sense of dread that something could go wrong. That's how you know you have a great attraction on your hands.

Screens just aren't scary. There's nothing dimensional about them.and its hard to get immersed when you know you're just looking at a screen with an image being projected onto it. At least with Jaws, knowing obviously the sharks are fake, there was something creepy/scary about a giant animatronic shark lurking underwater. The Jaws ride was my favorite ride ever and still is. I remember riding it since I was 5 until I was a teenager. As a kid it created a fear of swimming in the ocean and even swimming pools. I often imagined how scary it would be to swim through the Jaws ride at night with all the machinery and giant sharks below me in the water...
@mattnzn

I was asking a skipper questions about the ride a while back and he said most of the ride was 4 to 6 feet deep but the shark pits could get up to 20 to 40 feet deep. Not sure how true that is.

Great recap of an iconic, one-of-a-kind attraction-I still miss it so much. Love the clips you included from the early days after the ride was redesigned - back when it the effects and animatronics functioned to their full potential (and looked great too). To this day I’ll never be able to look at the demolition photos-those are just heartbreaking for anyone with an emotional attachment to the ride.

Thank you so much Jason! It was my favorite attraction as a child, even though it was absolutely terrifying. I think more people have to look at the older attractions when they first opened to see what their full potential was (including Kongfrontation and JPRA). It's a shame to see it gone, me and my sister were pretty devastated when it was announced it was going to close, we never really did get that one last ride before it shut down for good.

Theme Park History The last time I rode it was in 2006, back when the fire effects were turned off during the day but fortunately I believe my final ride on the attraction was at night, and the entire fire scene was functioning. Little did I know that would be the last time. In a way, I’m kind of glad. I’m outside of the state, so was even considering a vacation that Christmas that would allow me to see it one final time. Looking back, I think that would’ve been a really hard thing to do. I’d been visiting Orlando since I was 6 in the late ‘90s, and Jaws was always my favorite ride - anywhere. I just wish Universal had invested some love into the ride during its last month of operation-the sharks were hardly working at all by the end of its run. Still, I don’t remember or associate the ride with its closing. The memories are close to my heart, and fortunately, the ride stuck with a lot of people around the world.

It's a shame why they've decided to remove the classic attractions from the park but it's all about bringing in people. I miss the older attractions but rather not see them suffer and be a shell of their former self. Like you mentioned, the attraction wasn't in the best shape compared to when it opened, the sharks actually lunged out of the water and moved much better. Still, it's always sad to see something you grew up with go away, feels like a piece of you disappears.

The first time I went to Universal in 91, the Jaws ride was closed so I didn't get to experience it until when I moved to Orlando 11 years later, and this was my favorite. It was fun during the day, at nite it was genuinely scary. In 2004, days after Howard Dean's meltdown, one skipper responded to the screams coming from Amity 3 saying, "Thank you, Howard Dean!" I was incredibly depressed when I heard it was closed permanently for Potter.

I agree with you, there's way too many rides I didn't get a chance to ride as a kid either because I was too scared or not interested. Missing out on Alien Encounter is probably the one I regret the most, seemed like such a cool and interesting attraction that was ahead of it's time.
@JohnStripedfur
@JohnStripedfur 6 жыл бұрын
I went on it when I was in high school and even at that age, I thought it was a little too intense and scary. Especially for a Disney ride. But, I do like the storytelling and the effects that it has. It was just at the wrong park for its kind. Maybe at Universal it'll probably did better. I actually like Stitch's Great Escape that replaced Alien Encounter, but the execution of the ride itself fell very short. They made it like it was a parody of a Disney ride rather than getting people to fully invest into the ride itself like the original did. And that's the one thing you should never do at an attraction. If they tweaked the story a bit and made it as a prequel to Lilo & Stitch, it would've been better. Now, it's closed and so far nothing has been announced to what they'll replace it with. Oh well.

I agree, it really didn't make sense to have it at Magic Kingdom. It's suppose to be the happiest place on earth and Alien Encounter probably ruined that idea lol. Hopefully whatever comes next is a bit more exciting and family friendly.

Great video and good to hear the history behind it all. Didn’t realise that the re-opening was 1993, I was on holiday in Orlando that August, must have been one of the first people on it after the changes. It crazy how a 25 year old ride still puts chills up me but Jaws was terrifying, my brother had nightmares about it for 6 months after. The sharks appearance after the boat house was worst for me, it just shot up out of nowhere. Didn’t help I was sitting on that side and was looking over the edge of the boat to see where it was.

Thanks for watching Zorin! It definitely sounded like you got to witness the revamped attraction in it's pride and glory. The entire atmosphere of the ride is what really sold it, even though you knew you were in a theme park and the sharks weren't real and the water was 4 feet deep, there was always an uneasy feeling of something going bad, it always felt real.

I find the history of this ride super fascinating because in the sumner of 1990 my family packed into our conversion family van and “Lampoon’s Vacation” style drove to Florida from Green Bay. I was 9. We sat through a three hour time share pitch and in return received tickets to the one week old Universal Orlando. NOTHING worked EXCEPT for a few attractions including Jaws, E.T. and the pre-show for Earthquake. Jaws scared the living crap out of us. It was awesome. Kind of crazy to think we were part of a very select few to ride the original Jaws design. E.T. was a 6 hour wait, so yeah no. There also video of me epically failing a round of Simon Says while “auditioning” for Double Dare at Nickelodeon Studios🤣 Because the park was such a bomb we received never expiring tickets to return at any point. We ended up giving them to friends a couple years later! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!!

There's two rides I was too afraid of as a kid to go on, but my Dad always said were his favourites: Alien Encounter and Jaws. The year we went and I decided to try the former, it was already closed. When we went to Universal later in the week, the first thing I did was go on Jaws with him. I'm so happy I got the chance.

Thanks! It is my favorite ride and will die defending it, it was just such a great blend of atmosphere, storytelling, animatronics and special effects. There's was just something about the ride that really made you feel like you were really trying to survive a great white shark attack.

awesome recap of an iconic ride, which I'm glad I got to experience at least once and maybe twice, I forget. haha. gonna finally watch the film tomorrow, in 3D no less! subbed, keep it up, and 🎵dun dun..dun dun..dun dun...🎶 (that is a minor 2nd interval, the smallest of musical intervals between notes, as taught to me by my music theory teacher in highschool!)

My mom actually went on the ride when she was a kid, but she had nightmares for days afterwords. As for me, even if I never got to experience it in person myself, I’d actually like to be one of those skippers and ad a little fun fact at the beginning of the voyage that the Jaws novel was likely inspired by the Bull Shark attacks back in either 1866 or 1966 or something, cause in case you didn’t know Bull Sharks are not only very aggressive, but one of the only if not the only shark breed to survive in both fresh and salt water.
