After much searching, I found the perfect pruning shears! These Japanese made bypass pruning shears are top quality at an unreal price: 70% less expensive than the popular benchmark Felco F2's! Despite the low price, these pruners offer unbelievable quality on a budget.
The pruners are linked in my Amazon Storefront* under "Garden Accessories": www.amazon.com/shop/themillen...
Or use the direct link* here: amzn.to/35AqILw
I've wanted to replace my cheap bypass pruners for awhile, but there is a problem: the market is flooded with cheap pruners of low quality that I did not want. Another solution is to buy high quality Felco pruning shears, but they are very expensive. There are few options for high quality bypass pruners at a reasonable price.
These Japanese made pruning shears are the solution! The quality is top notch at a shockingly low price. These shears are less expensive than some of the questionable knock-off brands out there, yet after handling and using these shears for several pruning jobs, I'm blown away. They may be the best value out there for budget-minded gardeners!

My pruners came yesterday and I used them to prune my lemon tree today. They worked really well and sheared through the branches without crushing them. You were spot on about their weight and feeling of quality too. They absolutely are a really nice pair of no-frill pruning shears. Thanks again for recommending them.

I ordered them too. I had a pair of more expensive shears, but it was struggling to prune a 5/8" thick VdB, and also gave me a hard time cutting a bamboo stick which was a bit too long and wanted to shorten. So I tried this new Made in Japan shears and yes, it was a night and a day difference. What was like a breaking my hand and/or a test of my gripping strength is now a task akin to cutting through a butter. Now I can safely prune my little pear trees and persimmon too. Thanks for finding a quality tool.

@@AlexisIscah I’m glad you’re enjoying your new pruners as much as I enjoy mine. I was really worried about damaging my poor lemon tree while pruning it. The tree looks much happier now and is exploding with new growth. Hopefully you have the same experience with your fruit trees.

@@tucsonurbangardening2701 Hi, My plants indeed seem very happy with the spring pruning. The pears and a persimmon I mentioned earlier were new dormant bareroot trees. I planted them, but couldn't get myself to give the final pruning back of the main trunk because a difficulty I had with the soft VdB trunk. But now that I gave them the proper pruning, a 20th Century is showing a tiny green bud at the tip, right below where the pruning was done. I also gave my Meyer lemon which lost all its leaves last year, a clean-up pruning and now I DO see bunch of tiny leaf buds and some thorns forming all over it. I am happy. XD Now I need to research the good fertilizer ratio for a "recovering" citrus in the spring. Perhaps a good 30-10-10 citrus one still works.

Thank you so much for recommending these! I have a young variegated eureka lemon tree that got some frost damage this year. I really needed some good shears to prune off the damage. I just ordered a pair of the pruners and can’t wait to use them. Thanks again. Also Dale needs a new toy. My doggo recommends he try a stuffing-free toy. Jasmine (doggo) loves the way they flop about when shaken… like dead things.

I'm curious to hear how you'll like the pruners. We don't get Dale many toys with stuffing, because he will destroy them in about 5 minutes. But, he also loves killing them, so we occasionally get him one. This was a leftover toy someone got him from Christmas that we've been saving, since we knew he would instantly dead it.

Just got my pruners today and went out and trimmed my everbearing raspberries. Worked like a charm, nice sharp cuts (I cut on an angel as to not let moisture collect). What else I really like about them is when comes time to sharpen the blade, it removes easily without taking the whole damn thing apart, plus a nice large and secure locking mechanism. Thank you once again for passing this find along. I always wipe my steel implements with linseed oil after use, they never rust. I think that oily old rag is at least 10 years old.

I probably won't have much of an update this year. Most of my cordons were damaged this year since we went from a record-warm December to 14 degrees in January a couple weeks later, and now we have a 24 degree freeze coming Saturday that's going to kill whatever is left. There won't be any update, because they are badly damaged and what's left will be destroyed this weekend. This will probably be the 2nd year in a row we won't have any in-ground figs due to record late cold.

I could probably use a second pair of bypass hand pruners, but I'm not sure I'd be able to hop in without knowing I could buy replacement parts (maybe the low price is enough to give it a try...). I've been looking at ARS (made in Japan) to complement my Felco's (I have a 2 and a 20, which is a short handled lopper). I do really like the Japanese tools, they're very high quality. I have a pair of ARS 300DX needlenose hand shears that are really nice for harvesting fruit. My saws are all Silky, super nice!

If you have an entire orchard to prune, these may not be the pruners for you. I don't know about the replacement part system, so if you need a big ecosystem of replacement parts, spending ~$100 on a pair of commercial Felco's are probably worth it. For me, these are a really good value as backyard gardener with a little food forest. They are so affordable that, like you said, it may be worth it to you. I can tell you that I was able to get by with my cheap pruners and my Japanese saw before, so adding these is a LUXURY. They're awesome. If you decide to go with them, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

@@TheMillennialGardener Hahah, yeah. I don't have an orchard to prune, but I do have quite a few trees: 21 fruits trees + 3 grapes and maybe 2-3 more bareroot fruit trees to plant this year. They're a little small now, but once they start getting big, it'll be at the point where I worry about replacement parts. I'll probably keep most of my trees between 6x6' (very manageable) and 10x10'-12-12' (starting to become a handful). I've had corona shears in the past... they're serviceable, but I have become well adjusted to the 'luxury' pruning tools. I prune all my decorative / native shrubs in the yard by hand so I definitely appreciate the ergonomics a ton. I could probably talk myself into a pair of these for my wife to help with the shrub pruning. I do all the trees myself so I really only need 1 hand pruner to do that (the loppers make quick work of 1" branches, but they don't get a ton of use yet due to the small size of my trees).

It seems there are a couple names making this shear, including Kynup at the same price. Both use SK5 steel. SK5 is used with some knife manufacturers, including the famous Cold Steel SRK. I bought the first generation Kynup that uses a coil spring vs a volute spring. No problems. Kynup includes a spare just in case. They are such impressive cutters that I bought the 2nd gen shears for an inlaw. The cutting jaw is smaller on the 2nd gen and incorporates a volute spring. The steel will rust with neglect, but only a minimum of care is needed to prevent it. Washing and drying after each use has prevented a single spot from appearing on mine which I've used heavily for 3 years. Use a diamond rod for quick resharpening. For lubrication and off season storage I use an old method used by woodworkers on bare metal machine tables - Non toxic furniture paste wax. NOT the spray stuff! Petroleum products can contaminate plants. Another plus is this tool fits snuggly into the Corona leather scabbard.

These are supposedly Made in Japan. It's stamped all over the package and tool itself, so that should indicate manufacturing in Japan itself since the country of manufacture is the place it is made. I think the problem is some people are ordering the item through questionable foreign third party sellers. Amazon has problems with the Marketplace section where you order third party. Many of these sellers substitute items or outright scam people. I would be willing to bet the commenter that supposedly ordered a conflicting item ordered through a shady seller to save a dollar. I think it's a misnomer that high-carbon / alloy steel is always better for tools. You really have to consider the environment it's used in. Modern stainless steels for knives are very good (I use that term VERY loosely - degree of "stainless-ness" as a very broad spectrum). Just look at alloys like 20CV or M390, which are super premium stainless alloys. With that said I do really like some of the less-stainless alloys as you can usually pick up a little more toughness and edge retention (3V, cruwear, etc).
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
For pruners and knives, I believe high carbon steel is vastly superior. Yes, it may be true that the finest stainless steel is better than the cheapest high carbon steel, but as long as we're comparing apples-to-apples where the stainless steel and high carbon steel is of equal integrity, the high carbon steel is going to win. The problem with stainless steel is it cannot be sharpened to be as sharp and it will not maintain its sharpness as well as high carbon steel. The downside is that high carbon steel needs to be towel-dried after washing, and if you're storing it for long periods of time, you should lightly oil the surface to prevent corrosion. High carbon steel is higher maintenance, but it produces a dramatically better product assuming the steel is of good quality.
@nmnate
@nmnate 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMillennialGardener I'd take issue with the whole "cannot be made as sharp" and edge retention arguments. The selection of alloying elements is inherently a balancing act of all the different properties you're trying to achieve (edge retention, toughness, strength, corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening). You can get similar edge retention with non-stainless and stainless steels, but there's quite a bit of a tradeoff. The stainless alloys can be miserable to sharpen by the general user and they usually take a hit to the toughness, sometimes substantially. To the expert, they can get sharpen both alloys to incredible levels, way sharper than necessary for most occasions. I find that our experience with garbage stainless alloys for a lot of kitchen knives or cheap tools can bias our understanding of what the metallurgy is capable of producing. FWIW, my favorite kitchen knife is made out of high-carbon 52100 (Zwilling / Kramer 8" chefs knife)...but some of my japanese kitchen knives are pretty close and they're 'just' a stainless VG-10 core. I won't let my wife use the high-hardness japanese knives, they're a little too easy to chip for some without very careful knife skills. Trade-offs, y'know... :)

I own a Felco 2, and a no name brand (China made ~$10))prunners...Both do the job fine over the years, when you keep the blade sharp. The difference in cutting resistance is minor, with Felco slightly better, which I believe is primarily due to the design of handles that offer different leverage. The Felco one was a gift from my son, not because I definitely want it. Now that I bought a battery powered prunner due to the amount of prunning I do every winter, it is the one that I took out for that task. They don’t cut that well and are far too large. Furthermore, they are actually Made in China and not in Japan (says this clearly on the packaging I received). They managed to get some of their goods through the border without customs noticing that they are illegally being marked with “Made in Japan” - hence why some are correctly relabelled as “Made in Japan”. The pruners are far too expensive for the performance and quality - don’t trust the charlatan in this video who is clearly being paid commissions via his attribution link.
