I owned a T120 before swapping it for a Speed Twin. Looks-wise, I lean to the T120; I'm not old enough (I'm in my late 30s) to have nostalgia for the original Bonnevilles, but my father had one, so I suppose that's where it may come from. Beyond the looks, the T120 just can't compare to the Speed Twin; it's slower, heavier, handles more poorly, stops more slowly, and I wouldn't even say it's much more comfortable (though it is a bit) - none of this would really matter all that much if it wasn't for the fact that these motorcycles are basically equivalent in price, which means you're mostly paying for the cosmetics of the T120, and actual performance (in every sense of the word) on the Speed Twin. I find the Speed Twin more practical (ironically), mostly due to the fact that the lack of unfinished aluminium and 'delicate finish' parts (like the fake carbs) means that I can ride the Speed Twin in nearly all weather without feeling quite so terrified that I'll have to spend hours cleaning it, while possibly risking irreparable damage (i.e. scratched chrome). I do think the new T120s coming out seem to have sorted a number of issues; the lighter crank, lower inertia wheels, and built-in cruise control should add both ride-ability and value, and give the T120 a bit of attraction back. My advice to anyone not looking to ride in sunshine only is to get the T120 black (rather than the standard) as it will be easier to maintain the finish of... but don't get me started on the perils of matte paint. On a random style note, the T120 feels very 1950s/60s, whereas I see the Speed Twin as more 1970s/80s in terms of aesthetics. Cheers for the video!

Most ridculous thing in biking community is age association to specific bikes. If you are 20 you should have that and that bike. If you are middle age you should have that and that but not that. You should only have criteria of how the bike fits your needs and if it's giving you fun. That's all.

I traded my 06 Rocket 3 which I had owned for nearly 10 yrs for a 2018 T120 because of ill health. Could no longer manage the Rocket because it was so damned heavy, not to mention the running expenses! The T120 is miniscule in comparison and of course much slower. But, I could not be happier. I am back in my teenage to early 20's yrs when I get on the Bonnie. Working the gears, chucking it into corners, not worrying about stopping - the list goes on. Love it. Would like to change the pea shooters but blimey, modern exhausts are so expensive these days. Might just start with a cross pipe next year to get rid of the cat. But as you said, it's a proper gentleman's ride, a gentleman's express I like to say.

Nice honest video review, although l am tempted with the speed twins extra poke and sporty handling. The T120 is a great touring bike and l have done tens of thousands of pretty comfortable and relaxing miles on it. I am 67 and it is easier on the the, tyres, chain and body. For UK and European touring, l did really appreciate the more gentlemanly nature of the T120, it's a bike that grows on you......:-)

Back when I purchased my last motorcycle in spring 2019, these two were top of the list. I'd tested the T120 the season prior and loved it. But because of the Speed Twin's on-paper superiority -- exactly as you cite here, TMF -- I fully expected it to easily unseat the T120. But after a test ride, I couldn't have been more wrong. Despite the shared DNA, they've got distinctly different personalities. The T120 is more relaxed (and comfortable). As you accurately point out, it's the perfect unhurried Sunday companion. By comparison, the Speed Twin is a taut athlete, which also means it feels a bit high strung. For example, I recall it having noticeably more engine braking. In the end, both bikes are well rounded and characterful enough to chill out or pick up the pace, but for the roads we've got around here, having fun slow is worth more. For me, the T120 was the clear winner and a decision I'd repeat today. But then, who says we can only have one bike?

Tires, tire pressures and the exhaust pipes all are factors that come in the riding experience. Even with two of a kind bikes they propably would feel different. Great test, still and T120 for me. Although not that colour, a Bud Ekins would do me. Thumbs up, good video.

One of the things I really respect about TMF is your ability to do a subjective comparison (appearance, in this case), while considering alternative viewpoints. You'll point out what you find most appealing, while recognizing what others might find more attractive about the alternative. Such a rare thing these days to find such deep respect for the viewpoints of others.

Great review as usual! I own and love both bikes. I think you nailed the differences including the ergos and ride feel. The only thing I would add to help explain the performance differences is that the Speed Twin also has a higher final drive ratio (2.63 vs 2.41). I tend to take my ST out more often because it provides a completely different riding experience compared to my big touring bike.

I've got a lump sum from my civil service pension due as well, I wouldn't be disappointed if I stuck with the SE.. don't underestimate these Triumph's they are superb motorcycles you'll love to own... Thanks for the comparison, I think that your video has helped me make a choice between the T120 and Speed Twin (which was not very clear in my mind). I am actually still riding a Street Twin but I am thinking to "the next level" and the Speed Twin looks to be what I should purchase. Last but not least, for a french guy like me, your English accent is just perfect. Nice one Flyer. Ones decision really comes down to how you want to ride and look on each. The Speed Twin is set up for you to have a bit more of a go. Saying that, I bought a T100 Black last year and that has enough poke for me in my mid 50s . I’d certainly recommend fitting V&H peashooters. Fabulous deeper throater sound and feels like a couple of extra horses too.

Having tested a speed twin and owned a t120 for two years I was interested to see what you thought. For two similar looking bikes they are very different in character. Obviously the speed twin is designed to handle and perform better. The types of tyres fitted make a huge difference. The t120s heated grips and centre stand do make life a little easier, (although Triumph seem to have removed the stand to save weight on the 2021 version). As for the noise, I've fitted Vance and Hines pipes, but managed to get the US ones with removable decibel killers. Fitted Halcyon bar end mirrors, much cheaper than Triumph and really look the part. Keep up the good work Andy. It would be a boring old world if we all liked the same type of bike.

Good, comprehensive and practical comparison. I have the Speed Twin and love it, but I honestly prefer the styling of the T120. I think my main decision driver was the added safety of the tubeless tires. Though I'm within an hour's ride of the Appalachian Mountains, so I find the extra performance factor of the Speed Twin is paying dividends in grin factor.

I just got back from the local Triumph dealer. Coming from an R3, I felt a little nervous that these bikes would feel too big; not at all. The T120 was comfortable and easy to ride. It was like a walk with an old friend. Then, I tried the Speed Twin. As soon as I got onto the road, the bike let me know that it wanted to go, but in a confidence-inspiring way. There is now a Speed Twin parked in my garage. Thank you for the other video you did comparing the first and second generation Speed Twins. I agree that the first generation is the better looking bike, and my local dealer happened to have a brand new 2020 (3 miles on the clock) on the showroom floor, so I decided to grab it while it was available. I ended up with T120, and love it; but cant argue with TMF views. I don't know about the leg comfort for taller people, but yes better than the SpeedTwin! (All bikes seem cramped to me.....) I'd like a slightly more canted forward position on the T120.....make motorways a little more comfortable?

6’3” and got a speed twin with no issues at all with leg position. Also ride a Tiger 800 which is like a big armchair for comfort. Anyway, you don’t notice those concerns with the ST as it just puts a smile on your face especially when it pops and farts as you roll off. Engine is a masterpiece.

I love both models but I have to admit that the Speed Twin is the absolute winner. Triumph has managed to give the 2 models their own character and that is what makes them so special. This has been another great video and comparison test, thanks TMF, and I hope there will be more tests of the new Bonville models 2021, as the engines have been upgraded.

Fabulous video. Thank you. Frustratingly these options still mean that Triumph doesn't make the combination I'd like. As a larger guy who now has dodgy knees and back I need the legroom and upright stance of the T120. I'd love the extra power, less weight, plus the alloys of the Speed Twin. Sadly means I'll likely stick with BMW though the R9T also suffers from lack of lower pegs option.

Great review! My choice would be the T120 with the stock seat and rear mudguard and with the chrome rather than blacked out finish. I’d also fit some chrome bar end mirrors. The Speed Twin is lovely to ride but I’d rather have a Thruxton if I were looking at a ‘performance’ Bonnie.

A good review between both Triumphs. With regards to retro for the Triumph, I’ve only seen 1 Speed Twin and the thoughts I had then are still the same after watching this video. Because the name Speed Twin is a retro name from Triumph ( the old 650 ) I think the the Twin should have the spike wheels as well as the knee pads. The dummy carbs are the old Amal Mk 1 concentric I think that they should be in the Twin also. Just showing my age here Andy. Great review from Down Under.

That was an excellent comparison from an experienced motorcyclist. Andy is totally correct. Both are marvellous bikes and both very desirable. Also both cost about the same. Six months ago I had to decide between the two. My decision was based on the fact that I am a returnee to motorcycling after a 35 year hiatus. I watched various reviews, including Andy’s and ended up with the T120. It’s probably the correct choice for me, being a very uncurrent 64 year old git. The bike I purchased was a green and white model (2016-2020 range). I’ll probably (almost certainly will) swap it for something quicker in 2022 after I have more saddle time. If I was a current motorcyclist I would have had the Speed Twin. To me the cost of the Bonneville T120 is weight, flickability, some loss of braking efficiency and a fair bit of shove. So what do I gain? Centre stand, heated grips, blingy chrome spoked wheels, grab rail, easier seating position and slightly cheaper insurance (£186 fully compressive with no no-claims bonus). It’s also great fun to ride and goes like stink when you give it the beans. Am I happy with my decision? Absolutely. If you are in the market for a new bike, the new T120 (2021 onwards) has a different specification. The centre stand and grab rail have been deleted, the engine has been slighty tweaked with a new crank and the chrome rims replaced with aluminium. I also believe the brakes have been upgraded as well. If buying new, my opinion is that these changes might now make the Speed Twin a better option, all other things being equal. But if buying secondhand and ultimate performance is not your thing then a new or secondhand (2106-2020) Bonneville T120 is still worth considering.

So glad you did this comparison. I own a T120, it wins on style and with an X-Pipe fitted the pea-shooter exhausts sound pretty good as well. On spec the Speed Twin takes it, especially with the Brembo brakes and HP engine. My wish is a T120 TFC (Triumph Factory Custom) which would see the T120 specced up beautifully. I think Triumph owe us a new TFC soon, and if it’s a T120 I’ll be beating a path to hand over my deposit.

TMF, great video as always! I am conflicted between the T120 & Speed Twin and while you give the edge to the ST, I am leaning toward the 120 mostly due to ride stance & posture. Currently I have a Yamaha Star Bolt and want to upgrade to something nicer that has better ergonomics, especially with my legs as the Bolt just isn't doing it for me on longer rides. I've always had a soft spot for Triumphs even before I began to ride 5 years ago and like the classic style of the Bonneville - like you said, it's what a proper bike should look like. I've also thought about the Bobber and Speedmaster, but I think I want a change from the cruiser style.

I tried most of the range, the Speed Twin left me breathless with excitement. Though I love the power, I also want something that I am happy to be a little more sedate on and the Speed just urged me to overtake that car, take that bend a little faster which wasn't personally what I wanted. Fantastic bike, but I love my T120. The engine tone and burbling did nearly swing it though.

Love the back to back comparison - throwing in the Street Twin as well would have been even better! So tricky just seeing bikes in the showroom and on spec sheets, and of course you can't really expect to take all out on a test ride. Guess Triumph have different target markets for each variant in the same way that BMW offer all sorts of Boxer variants, albeit the Bonnevilles seems more alike at first glance.

I do think it's subjective, personal decision. Not surprised you picked the Speed Twin but then I do own a ThruxtonR which is more akin to the Speed Twin in terms of performance. That said a few years down the line I can see myself preferring the more relaxed riding position and performance of the T120 over the ThruxtonR but I would have to do a fair bit of customisation to a standard T120. Great review 👍

Very nice video sir. I've been riding my '72 Triumph to the dealer a lot lately looking at these two models. Personally, I hesitate to buy a bike with fake carbs. I think it looks lame. So I am very seriously thinking about a 2023 Speed Twin. I suppose that a center stand can be ordered or bought after-market. Maybe there's a way to add a throttle lock to act as a cruise control.I might miss the under-seat storage for a tool kit and the attachment points for luggage. Such a tough decision.

Great review of these two amazing bikes. From what I understand the engines are identical and where Triumph makes the changes is in the throttle mapping and not the fuel and timing. At full twist the throttle is actually only being told to open around 91%. You can adjust this with an Android device and ECU Tune app. Dont quote me on that, but I believe thats the only change between the two bikes with engine and power delivery.

As a T120 owner, that plastic mud guard affair at the rear of the one you have either isn't standard (since that's an Ace Cafe version) or they've changed the rear since 2018. Mine has a proper rear fender, which the taillight and indicators are mounted to. I love my T120 but I've been tempted to add a Street Twin to the garage (for when I'm feeling more sporty), as the T120 is definitely more of a lazy cruiser, despite having a lot of power...it just enjoys a relaxing ride and to be fair, so do I most of the time (and that's why I own it).
@gpearce11
@gpearce11 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that's the factory aftermarket tail-tidy (optional with online configuration). Completely agree that the standard rear fender looks way better, as I personally think that if you're willing to go for a bike so retro that they've disguised the injectors as carburettors, keep the retro fender. By comparison, that's the standard Speed Twin rear end, and you can tell. I suspect that most people that would insist on a tail-tidy on the T120 would probably also prefer the other aesthetic changes on the Speed Twin.
