New Triumph Trident's Terrific TFT Tested | Why I think Triumph have nailed it! I'm not a huge fan of electronics on bikes and in some cases that even stretches to TFT screens on certain marques. Down under Dave here again. Thanks again Andy I love your vids, and I also like the Trident very much. On a personal note about the Triumph TFT's & joystick, one of my bikes is a 2019 Tiger 800 XRT (the top road going version with all the goodies) and I, really like the TFT and the joystick controller. I love the various type of modes etc. The latter was mildly fiddly for a couple of thousand kms until I got used to it, but now I've done over 10,00kms I find it very intuitive and simple to use and I like that I can read everything on it without reading glasses! Which is nice if you have 20/20 long distance vision! (61 y/o). Also on my Tiger the ride modes are very noticeably different. Just a personal preference thing I guess. Anyhoo thanks again, I always look forward to your next production Andy ! :)

Was wondering if I didn't know how to use the internet? Been looking on your site, for this, a few weeks. Beautiful gauge! Almost worth buying the bike for. A version should go on every bike going for retro. Just watched a Revzilla Review on an Indian Chief Dark Horse. Had a similar gauge set up that looked very nice. Change modes on the fly. Maybe not Triumph nice but very cool. If they're going retro look the part and that Chief is a definite classic.

Thank you for posting. Keep the displays simple. Some of these are becoming more like plane control panels. Admittedly a bit of an exaggeration, but the newer the bike, the more it seems you need a checklist to make sure you cover your bases before "take off". Beyond the old goodies (e.g. tire pressure, tire condition, gas level, oil level, etc...) now you might need to: get on the bike, proper riding mode, check. Proper traction control, check. Proper wheelie control, check. Bluetooth on, check. Bluetooth mated, check. Sena/Cardo on, check, etc...

For me a lot of it comes down to what type of bike it is and how well the dials/instruments are implemented. Both analogue and digital displays can be made to look elegant or cheap. Analogue dials (even those combined with small LCD displays) go well on classic looking bikes and I really like the classy ones on Bonneville T100/T120 and Kawasaki Z900 RS. However from a practical viewpoint a well implemented TFT or LCD display will be easier to read, and has the potential for customisation by the user for the info displayed as well as style.

The noise is from the servo on the throttle bodies, its a quirk on some drive by wire systems often when the tps is not calibrated properly and its trying to close the throttle thats already closed. You can twist the throttle when its making the noise to confirm that's the source.

What i would like to see in the next gen of triumph tfts is a large screen like to street triples. Which shows speed, revs, fuel gauge & mode. And when needed can split the screen in half to do sat nav, with the speed on one side and other information overlayed in a readable format. Would like it to have a inbuilt speaker if you font want to pair it to a ear piece. You really only need the audio on smaller roads when you're doing under 30 so it should be audible.

BMW have it sussed on the GS. I still reckon the BEST TFT around atm is the new Indian one! It's small and round, like the new Triumph one but is also touch screen (with gloves!). I have a BMW with a TFT, my first TFT equipped bike. I rather like it, the main display is clear, concise and pleasing to look at and the nav function, whilst basic, is really handy. There is a lot of stuff on there though and occasionally I find I’m diverting my attention to the screen and it’s functions more than I should. This Triumph one looks like it has a decent balance between functionality and glitzy showroom appeal, but would it be too much to put an ambient light sensor in it rather than dedicating two large, prominent buttons to a rarely used function as brightness adjustment?

Having owned the scrambler 1200xc, I found the clocks really good. The 2 outside LCDs are very useful as the peripheral information is clearly displayed with as much or little as you'd want. That leaves the main circular dial free for speed, revs etc. Then there's the varying clock display modes which you can choose to look like analogue. Now I have a KTM 790 and although the clocks are good, they work more like a computer screen for cycling through the multitude of options. They do not display all the relevant info as clearly as the scrambler. The Trident clock is still a bit busy. I do agree the joystick affair on the triumphs is pretty naff.

Agree on the other Triumph TFTs. I test rode a Tiger 900, and just couldn’t find a setup I liked, particularly the revs. Seemed to be over-designed by someone who doesn’t ride (unlikely though). There's also a certain irony making a TFT that looks like a dial lol but on retro bikes I think it's a must. Great simple description. Funny there's always people who say 'why didn't they do this instead of that' ect ect. Funny thing is, if they had, the same people would have said, 'why didn't they do that instead of this' ect ect. And that's my rant for the day done 😁

I had a 2018 big tiger, which I liked (except for the weight), I did not upgrade to the latest model because of the toy-town TFT and the crappy joystick. I´m now on a 2021 GSA and I don´t think I´ll go back to Triumph again, unfortunately.

I was stopped for speeding while on a borrowed pre-digital BMW. The officer asked me, as they inevitably do, "Do you know how fast you were going?" I kind of blew up. "I have no idea," I told him. "I would need reading glasses and good lighting to be able to see the speed. Tiny numerals with kilometers and miles overlaid on each other." He sensed my frustration and let me off with a warning.

The clicky buttons on the Trident do look better than the joystick on my Speed Triple, plus the Trident has an ignition KEY ! Your suggestion of twin round TFTs that can usually be analogue dials is pretty good, although I do like watching the physical needles on my Speed Twin. I think the TFT on my Speed Triple is fine, and suits the bike, but for retro looking bikes it really needs to be a pair of physical dials, with small LCD inserts, like the Speed Twin / Thruxton. I guess the small LCD bits on the Speed Twin/Thruxton could go TFT. When Triumph get their TFTs wrong, it's not so much the TFT, as it is the way they're displaying the information. Bars that expand out and look like a sound level meter from a 1980s Hi Fi. I have to agree, and because they're "retro-ish" the Rocket 3 and big Scrambler would have looked a whole lot better with the pair of clocks off the Speed Twin or Thruxton. The clocks on the Rocket and Scrambler do look a bit 1950s sci fi. With bluethooth phone connectivity and an app, a lot of detailed information and twiddling that TFTs are needed for could really be done on a phone screen, and keep the dash nice and clean. It's not like you can really look at over complicated TFT minute details when riding. All you need then is speed, revs, fuel level and a few warning lights. Not much consolation to Triumph, there are worse displays out there. Try the Honda CB inverted LCDs. Can't see them in bright sunlight. Although I do see Honda have fixed the 2021 CB1000R, with a TFT ! Finally I notice you're maximising making us watch to the end for the outtakes. As Denis Norden might have said "It'll be alright on the night !"

I have just bought a Triumph Street Triple R, one of the reasons I chose this over the RS was that l much preferred the analogue taco and LCD display on the R. I had a test ride on the RS and found the TFT hard to read, especially at speed. The rev counter that moves out either side on the speed was impossible to see in your peripheral vision. The analogue taco with shift lights on the R is much better. I agree that a TFT replicating an analogue display would be great.

At one time I was all for the 'do everything TFT' like the BMWs. Then when I changed bikes last year to the Ninja 1000SX I was concerned about the lack of gimmicks with the TFT and even mocked a professional YT review (VisorDown I think) for saying they thought Kawasaki's TFT was the best on the market... But almost a year on and I now agree wholeheartedly. I get audio satnav and calls etc via headset when required leaving my eyes to concentrate on the road. A quick glance at the Ninja TFT and I get e'thing I need instantly.

The reason it's good is because the top half is LCD, not TFT and readable. It's only the little square at the bottom which is TFT. It would definitely be a cost saving over a full TFT, but I find the LCD much more readable and a better choice. (I have a 2020 Street Triple and find it far too fussy and hard to read quickly ... even before taking the tachometer into consideration, it's useless).

We would love to make an anti-glare screen protector for the Trident 660 to help with those reflections - however, we have to use a special material for our Trident screen protectors due to its convex TFT screen. This material only comes in a clear finish. Sorry about that!
