Above Ground Septic System | Ep4 Building Shipping Container House

The Modern Home Project

Күн бұрын

Building an above ground septic system is the focus of this episode of how to build a shipping container home. I wasn’t originally planning on devoting an entire episode to septic tanks, leach fields, and above ground concrete planters that can remediate sewage but I had so many set backs trying to do a conventional septic system I thought this topic deserved it.
The full PDF house plan set is now available and for sale here: gum.co/WLXVe
I expect a lot of questions about the bioremediation and am currently looking for an expert in grey and black water systems to interview. If you know of anyone please let me know in the comments. I have not seen composting toilets that I feel are convenient enough but I welcome recommendations and insights that might have escaped me.
This system is an experiment. It seems to work for now but I wont endorse until I have seen it work for a few years.
I will be posting images and specs to www.themodernhomeproject.com/

This is the best example of how to build an off-the grid shipping container house on KZfaq by far. It's not something that an average Joe would have accomplished. This guy is a professional architect/builder who is investing in this project to gain first-hand experience with all the permits in the most regulated state, working with all kinds of materials and dealing with planning and cost overruns on his own. From there it's smooth road to ANY shipping container house because sky is the limit. This is the way to go! Kudos to the channel and waiting for more videos!

Fantastic project. I would like to offer two helpful bits of information: There is a plant called vetivier that is used for water remediation projects. The root system is extensive and they can absorb any contaminants. The 2nd is you can inoculate your septic tank with EM microorganism (Effective microrganism by company of the same name). You do this by putting inoculated ceramic balls in mesh bags submerged in the septic system. The ceramic balls serve as hotels for the EM microrganisms and the balls stay housed in the bag. They will help consume the waste.

@@skanklepuss Yeah, they can. Simply omit the shipping container. The shipping container only adds cost. It does nothing else, other than adding additional reinforcement to your house. I was the first person on the shipping container house fad (after looking at pictures) until I later learned the reality of it all.

I guess this can technically be called an "above ground" sewage system. In our city neighborhood the efluent drains into one more holding tank where it gets continuously aerated to kill most bacteria. When the aerating tank becomes full a pump activates and the sprinkler system sprays it on the lawn. So, really you can just spray all that efluent on the ground as long as you aerate it first for a few days in a separate tank. I bet you could grow grass in the desert with that kind of fertilizer.

About 6 1/2 months now since this episode, #4, was posted; I clicked Subscribe after Ep 2. I binge watched them all and was disappointed to see it drop off. This was becoming quite the motivation for me to finally get some ideas drawn out and work on realizing my dream plans. The presentation, insight to design, and every aspect of the videos are head and shoulders above the countless others I have seen. I'm still hopeful that the other episodes will materialize.

this is why i love this series. i adore container homes and would love to build one out eventually, but there are no videos to this depth (or any resources that i’ve really found!) that explain the finer details of building a house so far off the grid. i’ve always thought using effluent/waste water in a garden would make the most sense but i had no idea what pipes i would need, what would need to be above and under ground, how to connect everything with mechanisms for overflow safety, etc. i’d rather you take time for these denser videos and they be spread farther apart for the best informational impact! thank you so much for sharing this build process, i’m learning so much

Wow!! I had the privilege as an excavating contractor here in Phoenix to sub for a guy here installing the first ever system like this in az on camelback mountain circa 2001 or so (?) as his very own creation! I can't say I understood it but it was obviously extremely successful and said dude was afterwards installing these things throughout the state *explanation-this particular site wasn't conducive for typical sewer hook up due to costs and also due to the imagination of dude. I believe as the pioneer of this system in az he went on to bring it throughout the state. Cheers!

Very cool. I had built the first permitted septic system of this type in Arizona some 21 years ago. In the application process, I used the term "constructed wetlands". It is a concept developed by the TVA that addressed perk issues when they flooded vast areas of farmland. There are large rest stops in lower Appalachia where you can see these systems in place. I like the concrete planters. Looks like they saved a lot of work.

VP Garden Too right, mate, Very true. I guess he wanted to undertake this building process with shipping containers to actualise a design idea or project he had envisioned, (to use his experience in renovations, & go beyond into new house builds, using these since it is gaining popularity??) but got "bogged down" (LoL pun intended) with so many extra criteria to meet which the states "regulations" and codes have required of it, & him... It probably has a lot to do with where he has chosen to do this, by all accounts (in comments.) I don't know (wonder) if he knew ahead of time, if he would still go ahead with this expensive exercise...? I was just dying to see the insides, at the start, which is more my thing, Interior Design and Decor, but found the building stuff interesting too. But I just cant watch this one all through, when mainly focusing on the septic! Not in the middle of the night anyway, or maybe not ever...!?? This poop in the plants is like he is establishing a new desert community for shipping container life, but no one else will be following or coming to the party after this, eh!?? Lol. I admire his pluck but its just overkill what he has to do to meet the codes, as if it isnt enough work as it is without all these extra things & expenses imposed... And now poop disposal tanks! Wonderful. Not for me I guess an RV or trailer (caravan we call them ) still requires elimination of waste somewhere and even dealing with that side of things in one of those is pretty daunting, love checking out Caravans (trailers) and Campervans, and follow a family on youtube doing full time travels, as well as small transportable homes, (tiny house movement, Lol) & you will always hear something about that, cant be avoided. Composting though would be better but they may not allow it there, there are some places they just don't... Funnily enough, here in Aussie, my brother has told me, builders dig a hole on new home building sites (to use a porta loo) and after they're done, cover it over leaving it, their business, on your property! Seems you can poop anywhere here :/

I'm actually surprised that this type of system was permitted, maybe due to the low daily flow of the system. Where I am located, it is almost always required that a subsurface system is installed to disperse the effluent. In your case, while yes you are discharging effluent from your septic tank, it is not treated (other then basic treatment from the septic tank) so there is always a risk for animals or people to get sick. Only time a surface discharge is permitted would be when the effluent has been treated to a point it can be drinkable for simplicity sake, but obviously you would not drink it. I'm not sure I agree with the overflow going back into the septic tank. By the looks of things it doesn't seem that there is a alarm installed, I would strongly recommend you getting an alarm installed within the riser because if you have a large influent event from a get together or something you could potentially run into a problem. If the flower beds are fully saturated and sending effluent back into a already full septic tank, having an alarm can notify you to either stop using water or get the tank pumped. Also a backflow preventer may be a good idea, so waste does not re-enter the building.

Jason Ghawali I didn’t notice that there wasn’t an alarm but I agree with you. There should be a high water alarm to let you know that something is wrong (pump has failed or a float is stuck). Otherwise you’re out of luck. Nice catch
