If you have ever wondered what are the main differences between a thruster and quad fins setup, then THIS VIDEO IS FOR YOU!
As I already mentioned in the video, this is a personal opinion given the years of experience that I got until now riding for several brands in the windsurfing world (Quatro, Goya, JP and Starboard).
There are many variables that define a board and the way it turns and feels, but overall I believe that a thruster or quad fins setup should feel differently, as I mentioned during the clip.

Great video Frederico. First time that I have seen someone meaningfully explain the difference between those two fin configurations. Keep up the good content mate. Look forward to seeing you in West Oz one summer,

Great video, largely confirms what I’ve found with my Pyro. When the waves were big in Pacasmayo then I needed to ride it as a quad. But in Pistol River I rode it as a thruster. Now I’m using it as a twin and loving it in conditions that I previously used it as a thruster. But as soon as the waves get serious I’ll go back to quad.

Very interesting video. I always enjoy a professional riders opinion - thanks for sharing this. I think you summed it up at the disclaimer at 0:48 and people must not forget that. The many other variables in my opinion make a bigger difference than whether the board is thruster or quad. I started off with single fin wave boards, then I rode a quad for possibly 6 years or so. Although I did have a thruster I'd use some times. I now only sail thrusters and am sailing in Cape Town, down the line conditions, from small to big waves. I don't see myself ever getting a quad again. Just a personal thing. One of my old boards has three US fin boxes and I run all three thruster fins the same size. It's an epic board. I wish manufacturers would ditch the slot box 😅 It gives the rider more options. Looking forward to the next video.

Cool Adrian, thanks for sharing! I agree with you and as I said there are many other variables that can change the whole setup times and times again. Let's say that the fin setup is an "easy" and simple way to do so though, so it's good to know how it works. Finally, I feel you riding only thruster now and not seeing you on quads again; I had that too 2 years ago and then one day I said "come on let's try it thruster just once again for today" and I realised what I was missing! So be sure to give it another try to quad, you never know, you might find a new magic board 😜🙌

Nice explanation. I do think it’s nice that’s boards come designed for one or the other. I use a thruster in all conditions. I’m not a great wave rider anyway and I’m most of the time in onshore conditions. For the quads I’ve rented, I find them quite harder to go upwind and plane early with my poor technic.

Thanks for your feedback Andres! If those are the conditions where you mostly sail in, then I agree with your decision. For a down the line trip though, be sure to have a quad setup with you too 😉🤙

Hi Frederico, first of all i´d like to thank you very much for all of your interesting content. Since you have both boards I´m very interested in your opinion on the 78L Ultrakode (2022) vs. the new 78L Ultra (2023/2024). I´m 67kg and sailing mostly in Canaries (Lanzarote/Tenerife), this year also Moulay. Just doing my first frontside rides right now. It should be my allround waveboard. Thank you very much and keep on posting!!

Hey! Thanks for your comment and I'm so sorry for my late reply, hopefully this can still be helpful 🙏 The new Ultra (2023/2024) is an even more radical board for waveriding, only in thruster setup, but still with the same speed and stability! I got an Ultra 82 this year but next year I will order again a 78 as I really loved that board and I used it everywhere (Chile, Canaries, Maui, Fiji and Europe). And I weigh 74kg, so yes, I would say it's the right board for you. The newest one is more radical but also the 2022 version is good, in case you have a more fixed budget! Good luck and have fun!🤙💯

Interesting. Was wondering if you would ever put a bigger single fin in to the thruster ultra code to use as bit more of a free ride board if the waves were not happening?….
@AdrianTregoning
@AdrianTregoning Жыл бұрын
You're limited by the US box, depending on how big you want to go. Some bigger volume boards may have a powerbox for the central fin and that'd give you more options.
@FedericoMorisio
@FedericoMorisio Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you could do that, give it a try! Adrian is right though, so you might not be able to put a way bigger central fin; but check it out and for sure try it out, it could make the board more agile and fun to ride!👌💯

What about toe in at your front fins i can see you use ezzy asymetric fins on your new ultrakode ?
@FedericoMorisio
@FedericoMorisio Жыл бұрын
Yes, I've been using those asymmetric lateral fins on the ultrakode in thruster setup as I feel like they make the board faster and more agile. Center fin is MFC though and all my quads are MFC K300 models!

light wind versus strong wind ? which one would you use ?
@FedericoMorisio
@FedericoMorisio 2 ай бұрын
It depends also on the wave type! If it's a big and powerful wave I would go for quad, if it's smaller and less powerful than thruster 🤙

In typical Euro Wave Conditions or to put it in another way not down the line condition it seems to me that you recomend the ultra. This seems ok for me if the wind is not that strong. Im 92 kg my smalest sail is less than 3.3. I have an Ultra Kode 100 if I get an Ultra 93 I would need an Ultra 86 also. If I just get a hyper 93 that might be enouph boards for all conditions?
@olaf7726
@olaf7726 Жыл бұрын
thanks for not ansering my question. That forced me to think about more. I came to the conclusion that for my kind of sailing I need a Ultra with a Quad setup.
@FedericoMorisio
@FedericoMorisio Жыл бұрын
Hi Olaf, sorry for my late reply 🙏 Wow smaller sail than 3.3, that's strong wind! Where are you usually sailing? In general I would say the Ultra IS your board! The Hyper has a really thin tail which makes it more technical and difficult to ride onshore conditions; but if you got really strong winds then it might still work, that's an option. Other option is to go for the Ultra 93 as you said, to use with strong winds as a thruster. The 2023 Ultra comes only in a thruster setup, so if you want it quad you would have to find a 2022 UltraKode. I had both the 78 and 82 Ultrakode 2022 and in my opinion the 82 was working much better on a thruster setup than quad. So overall, you got a tough choice to make here haha If you tell me exactly the spots where you sail I might be able to give you better advice! Thanks 🤙💯

I have a question about your quad setup. Wouldn't it be more efficient to put the big fins as the leading fins and the smaller ones as rear fins as in surfing? That should give more drive and keep the board turny. With big fins as rear fins it is just another thruster.
@0warami_7oo
@0warami_7oo 5 ай бұрын
No it wouldn't, there will be more drag, turning will be more easier. Have a look at kai lennys surfing, same as these quads in 70ft waves

Hey Flo! That's an interesting question! I've never done it but you might give it a try! It depends which fins are, on which board you would try and if they have the same configuration!🤙
