If by Rudyard Kipling narrated by Tom O' Bedlam.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!

I've read "You'll be a Man, my Son," on Reader's Digest over 2 decades ago that Rudyard Kipling wrote this poem for his son, John. Who was enlisted and died during a war. Years later, Mr. Kipling received a parcel from France of his book "Kim" which was ridden by a bullet hole. When he read the letter it came with, it explained that his book saved the life of the person who sent him the package. As a sign of gratitude, that French soldier named his newborn son, Jean, in honor of Mr. Kipling's deceased son and he also made Mr. Kipling the Godfather of Jean. Every single time that I would come across this poem, I am reminded of the purpose it existed, that Rudyard Kipling wrote it to encourage his son.

When I was in the sixth grade, the teacher gave us the first four points to memorize and recite in front of the class. My father caught me practicing the homeworks. Dad insisted that I memorize the whole thing. When it was my turn, the teacher was appalled when I continued on with the rest of the poem, while the class asked where the rest of it had come from.

Some years ago my grandad asked that when he died if I would read this at his funeral. Was a favorite poem of his from Rudyard Kipling written to his son John. Rudyard probably never imagined when he wrote this for his son in 1910 that his son would be dead 5 years later in the trenches on the western front. I never imagined I would be reciting a poem for my grandad, whose name was also John, when he passed last year. But it was a privilege nonetheless.

Yes Kipling's son died in the army at pretty young age. The man Kipling is refering to is not his son but his godchild. Kipling's friend seeing him grieve for his real son's loss asked him to be the godfather of the friend's kid. Kipling agreed. So out of love he wrote this poem for the child as Kipling wanted to impart all life lessons to the young one before Kipling dies as he was remorseful that he couldnt do so for his real son

This poem means a lot to me, when my grandad died I had to stand up in front of everyone and read this out, he was the definition of a wise man, he came up from nothing from immigrant parents, had kids, but spent most of the time at the office, working to make ends meet, had three jobs day in day out he worked, made money and supported them, he couldn’t be there at the start for them but he did what he had to, I was his second grandson and he taught us so much, about life about art, how to be a gentleman, a work ethic, and he died in 2019, but he did all that work from when he was a father and had mashed potatoes every night to a happy life and left enough to but houses for each of his 4 children, love you grandad

We homeschool our son and last year we studied 12 poems. My teen son wasn’t interested in this assignment at first, he thought it was a waste of time. But as we dissected the meaning and immersed ourselves into the poems he began to really enjoy it. “IF” was one of our favorite poems. We spent a week discussing it and how it applies to his life. At the end of your school year and during his evaluation he told the evaluator that getting lost in the poems we studied was the best part of the year. And he really enjoyed it and can apply it to his life.

@@nickrameau938 no, it was jack. A nic name for John. His son was too near sighted and too short to be in the military, but Kipling was determined that his son serve ( even though HE never did) and to make his father happy , so was the son. Jack got a commission and never asked of his men anything that he would or could not do himself and was greatly respected in his own right...not a Kipling's son, as it started out to be. But his glasses broke in combat and he couldn't see to protect himself. Kipling was a jingoist and many of his poems and stories were "white man's burden " sorts. I think the death of his son opened his eyes, at least a bit. Jingoism was the fashion those days but Kipling did help it along.

One of my all time favorite inspirational poems of all time. I made it a family tradition to present a beautiful framed copy to each of my 3 sons as a gift on the Christmas of their 21st year. Now in their 40's they have each had occasion to refer to it over the years many times for inspiration. Yes, I agree that both men and women can gain strength and meaning from this but I don't feel the fact that it was directed to a " son" detracts from it one bit. I can recite this poem by heart. The story is a worthwhile one. When I went off to college, my father, who was among other things a Lt Col in the Air Force, didn't know how cool backpacks were so had gotten me a rather nice leather briefcase to carry to class with me. I thanked him of course, and promply put it away in the upper shelf of my closet, not to be touched for a few years until I was ready to begin interviewing and thought I'd look "professional" carrying it. So I got it down, opened it for the first time, and inside found a nice Cross pen and pencil set, some letterhead stationary I'm sure he expected me to write home on yet never did, and a small leather bound booklet, maybe 2 inches square, that had inside this poem, on four pages. I sat and read it several times, alternating between awe an tears at the words my father had given me years before, but I had ignored. In his own stoicism, he had not asked once if I had read it, or commented on the writing set. The next time I went home I had the book in my pocket and laid it on his desk as I both thanked him and admitted I had only recently read it. He looked at me at me and said, "it's never too late to know that poem, son." I've long since lost that little booklet, but the poem and his message are indelibly etched into my consciousness. I've recited it to my own sons many times. It's the finest legacy I believe you can give them.

I wish sometimes that my father had led me to a brighter path than the one he settled for. But perhaps it was the lack of a map that allowed me to find the things he never could. What was that? Are you quoting someone? Is this a poem by someone? Or did *you* write it? If you did then you have a way with words. I am going to jot it down somewhere.

That is the best written and spoken verse I've ever heard. To the scumbags who vandalised this piece of script in a British university, you don't have the brians or the will power to fully understand how Mr Kipling wanted others to feel after reading this and for that I pity you dearly!!!!!!!!!

I first came across this poem when I was a very young girl. I still remember how it inspired me then, even though I only had a superficial understanding of it. I was in my early twenties the last time I read it in its entirety. Now that I am much older, wiser and more experienced, I couldn't help but get emotional as I was reading it. Such poignancy and wisdom in a poem.

In my opinion this poem advocates the perfect balance, one we as all humans strive to achieve. To walk with kings but keep in touch with the common man, a line which should be used in politics across the globe. I’m privileged to have read this poem, to understand that balance and stoicism is what makes us the perfect being and remember exactly what it is that makes us who we are and what we strive to achieve. This is an absolute masterpiece of art.

I love poetry - and your picture - reminds me of a sky I saw yesterday re-entering the courthouse having left my note/doodle pad in the car - in the overcast sky ahead to my left - a ragged diamond on its side - with a view through it to a clear patch of sky blue with but a few white puffy clouds dancing in it - and straight ahead - a round jagged opening to the same sky blue sky - with only three white puffy clouds forming two eyes and large smiling mouth - and such are my symbols and signs that make the rhythm of the words that I rhyme - and such are the days ... Of those who say not "if" but "when"

So awe inspiring. Hold your head up especially with gossipers who distort things and conversations. There are those you can trust and others you cannot. There are true friends that will always be there whatever and others who when you are in a crisis, don't want to know you or pick up the phone. Those who trick you into borrowing money but never intending to pay it back. A loan not a gift. Live YOUR life not other people's. 🤔
