In this video, I discuss the unique design of helical-fed magazines found in Calico firearms, through the use of the program World of Guns: Gun Disassembly.
This is the site I downloaded World of Guns: store.steampowe...

I always scratched my head about the inner workings of pp-19 bizon's weird magazine. While I don't have any pictures or videos on that, this video gives me a good idea of how the magazine works, which is all I need. Thanks.

I would like to see all, "how it works videos", done this way. I've been interested in Military/Naval/weapons topics for over six decades, and never heard of the helical magazines before. Oddly, I Googled the subject, after reading a manual for a First Person Shooter PC game. Live and learn. My compliments to MouseGunner for an excellent video, and for having very good verbal skills.👍👍

Thank you for setting me straight on this fun idea I've been interested in for years. More recently, I've wondered about an epoxy injection rail gun system to spray shrapnel with capacities of 1000 rounds per compressed constituent ingredient to the projectile.

The reason it never caught on was primarily the AWB. They're back in business actually selling the whole firearms again now (after slowly rebuilding operations for several years just offering spare parts and MAC conversion kits). In the time between getting forced out of business by that sedition, and their comeback, Russia, China, and North Korea all adopted Calico-inspired (and admittedly/expectedly refined) helical mag designs for their armed forces.

The owner was not as focused on the impending cali assault weapons ban, instead of building a shit ton of mags he built a shit ton of receivers not realizing that the manufacturer of the mags is what would be banned. The first ban was skirted by other manufacturers by simply changing the model number of the weapon, he had thousands of marked receivers that were specifically banned. And more importantly no mags to go with them

So, to my eyes, there doesn't actually seem to be a problem with the magazine. The problem seems to be how far the magazine has to turn in order for the bolt to catch the next round out of the magazine. I think reliability issues would be solved if the bolt was delayed a bit during the forward motion to give the magazine time to react. Also, lube on the inside of the magazine to reduce friction would probably help.

There is a use for them. The N. Korean army is equipped with AK-74 rifles with helical magazines that hold 250 7.62 rounds under the barrel. This means that their rifles weigh about 20 lb and are front heavy by about 6 lb. When they run out of ammunition it will take about 10 min. to reload unless they carry two or three mags in their packs which adds 26 - 39 lbs. Plus - they jam a lot. In other words, this is a great magazine for OUR forces if the N. Koreans use them. :D

Actually the appearance of the weapon in Sci-Fi films is not all that impractical. The .22lr has long been considered a good round for use in future spacecraft. If you have a high rate of fire, it is deadly, but less likely to blow a hole in your own spacecraft. The low recoil would be good in a zero gravity environment, and if fired in a vacuum, the bullet would retain full velocity and energy pretty much forever or until it ran into something. I understand it was a reliable weapon, but like the author says, a bear to load. Not practical at all for military or police.

MouseGunner, 100 rounds of .22 LR weighs about 12 ounces. That's as much as 28 rounds of 9x19 or 28 rounds of 5.56x45 or fourteen rounds of .45 ACP. That's as much as the weight of the ammo in one AR15 magazine or one mag for a Glock 21 or less than the weight of ammo in two Glock 17's. It isn't the weight of the ammunition that is the problem with the Calico's helical magazine.
@TheMouseGunner
@TheMouseGunner 6 жыл бұрын
When I was talking about the disadvantages, I was talking about Calico helical-fed magazines in general. I realize the possibility of confusion due to the model I showcased being .22 LR , but I was more talking about the 9 mm versions when I was discussing issues of weight. For some of their designs a fully loaded magazine more than doubled the weight of the gun unloaded.
@thelaughinghyenas7962
@thelaughinghyenas7962 6 жыл бұрын
MouseGunner, The more than doubling is true for the Calico Liberty III pistol but that would be true of about any 9mm pistol if you add the weight of 100 rounds of 9x19. It isn't an inherent fault of a helical magazine. I firmly believe that if someone actually put the time and money into it most of the issues of a helical magazine could be solved, making it an effective package for something like a huge capacity submachine gun.
