Late to the party: Saliva would damage the wax, the real one has enough preservatives it would probably be fine.

Plus, gods only know what was in the wax they used. I mean, they thought mercury was a totally acceptable medical treatment, and they put arsenic and cyanide in pills as well. Where a, the fluid preserving a real head would probably *just* be formaldehyde. Maybe.

Do you know what kind of chemicals they use to preserve specimens? If not, here's a hint: go to Ask A Mortician on KZfaq and see what Caitlin Doughty has to say about embalming fluids. It ain't pretty.

Syphilis really isn't a bad guess at all, secondary syphilis can cause rashes that become pustular and latent syphilis is characterised by the formation of gummata, necrotic growths that can form on the face.

I grew up outside of Philly and have great memories of visits to the museum. I just discovered your channel via a recently posted virtual tour and am now bingeing older videos. I live in NYC and and while we have amazing museums here, the Mutter Museum is a one of a kind, must see. I look forward to more content and will definitely bring my niece and nephew when the museum opens back up!

OK this video is nine years old but I am a non-medical interested party and I want to visit this museum. I really want a docent to give me every story along the way. This is all too fascinating and horrifying to not have a story or what would’ve caused the necrotizing fasciitis. Was it syphilis? Was it taken in the face? Was it a trip to Africa and a snake bite? I love whatever you are presenting, so keep them coming even though you’re nine years too late or I am nine years too early.

Going by the squeaky noise I'd say it was a bird caller (yes, a device actually exists that makes a squeaky noise like that and it's used by birdwatchers to attract birds).
