Kodak has just announced a new Kodachrome 64 film in 35mm and a K-14 home processing kit. I was given a preview set and walk through the steps in this video.

I confess that at almost 3:00am, I was only half listening for the first 15 or 20 seconds, but when he said home processing kit for K-14 of a new Kodachrome film, my reaction was "that's nuts". It still took me another 15 seconds to trip to having rolled into April Fools Day. Now back to the remaining 19 minutes of video.

Awesome video, no matter whether it’s a joke or not. Cause if it’s true - awesome - I bet there are thousands of people waiting for K64. If not - that’s a hell of a joke. You got me gooood. The seriousness, the amount of data and technical information, the dedication. Very well delivered. ;)

There are a lot of steps, so labeling just makes sense to keep things in the right order.

I was actually really excited about this because there is actually a guy who's reverse engineering K-14 in his garage and has come pretty close. I thought maybe this would have been this guy's process.

That would be Go Everywhere on KZfaq, though he hit some road blocks with sourcing chems thanks to the pandemic and I don't know if they've continued working on it since. Their color coupled developers aren't the same as the original and probably wouldn't have the exact same overall color or archival quality if they nailed it down better with automated light exposure. I do hope they publish their current progress and chemical choice even if they don't further develop their process, so others can build upon their work.

@@mikafoxx2717 They guy said he was like 95% there and what was left was only getting it to produce consistent results. I think that might have even been before the pandemic. Again it’s just one guy in his garage reverse engineering it. So he’s not using the same chemicals at all. Just those that will have the same effect.

That sounds like him, yes. I think his difficulties were based on manual light exposure. You know, and very expired slide film doesn't help.

Thank you for making this. You brightened my day. My bestest photography friend took his own life 8 years ago. We were close friends for 33 years. His name was Mike. He had depression and he never got help for it. For the past 8 years I have forgotten about enjoying this day as his memory floods my mind, because he decided to leave on April Fools day because he felt like such a failure . I have always enjoyed your channel and appreciate you going to so much trouble to entertain us with your knowledge and good humor. It has given me a bit of hope again. Thank you. 🙏♥️

APRIL FOOLS!!!! :-D You had me for a few minutes! Great job on keeping the straight face. (Though I really thought that you were going to crack a few times here.) I foresee a bright future in politics for you. :-) Maybe it should have been Kodachrome 41 or the new K-41 process! I've seen great April Fools pranks before, but I think this is the best that I've seen for a very long time. What a "classic"! Keep 'em coming! Glenn

I was hoping to see you pull the developed film from the reel in the end, and lo and behold, it is a slide film with the letters A-P-R-I-L F-O-O-L-S exsposed on the first few frames :)

Jones aside, this is quite accurate to what the real process would be like, besides the specific light exposure direction. The red layer is also blue sensitive because silver halide is blue sensitive without any sensitizing dyes, so you have to take advantage of the filter in the yellow colloidal silver filter. The main problem with Kodachrome is the dye coupled developers they used and their environmental impact, plus lack of demand at that point in time.

You put in a lot of work for a joke. It was entertaining though. Visco actually did reverse engineer the K14 process to make their Kodachrome film simulation. It took them quite a bit of effort and time.

I don't believe anything I hear, and only half of what I see. I can't find any kodak chems for C-41, RA-4 and E6 on line anywhere, and now all of a sudden, the clouds have parted and a bright ray of sunlight has beamed down on the photographic community to reveal a extinct film with a kit to process it! If this is true, excellent! If this a contrived April fools joke, then hats off to Naked for a very creative post.

Nice April fool's day joke. But the joke was on us due to political correctness. Kodachrome may have had some nasty chemicals, but the detergents and other faeces that are flowing down our gutters into our water ways is the unfunny joke. Kodachrome 25 was special, shot a roll and two weeks later you got a yellow box with those wonderful Kodak moments.
