Michael ("Mick", "Big Fella") Collins (Irish: Mícheál Seán Ó Coileáin; (1890.10.16 --1922.08.22) was an Irish revolutionary leader, Minister for Finance in the Irish Republic, Director of Intelligence for the IRA, and member of the Irish delegation during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations. He was shot and killed in August 1922, during the Irish Civil War.

Lyrics :
Come listen all me true men to my simple rhyme
For it tells of a young man cut off in his prime
A soldier and a statesman who laid down the law, and,
To die by the roaside in lone Beal na Bla
When barely sixteen to England crossed o'er
For to work as a boy in a government store
But the Volunteers call he could not disobey
So he came back to Dublin to join in the fray
Chorus
At Easter nineteen sixteen when Pearse called them out
The men from the Dublin battalion roved out
And in the post office they nobley did show
How a handful of heros could outfight the foe.
To Stafford and jails transported they were
As prisonners of England they soon made a stir
Released before Christmas and home once again
He banded old comrades together to train
Dail Eireann assembled our rights to proclaim
Suppressed by the English you'd think it's a shame
How Ireland's best and bravest were harried and torn
From the Arms of their loved ones and children new born.
For years Mick eluded their soldiers and spies
For he was the master of clever disguise
With the Custom House blazing she found t'was no use
And soon Mother England had asked for a truce
Oh when will the young men a sad lesson spurn
That brother and brother they never should turn
Alas that a split in our ranks 'ere we saw
Mick Collins stretched lifeless in lone Beal na Bla
Oh long will old Ireland be seeking in vain
Ere we find a new leader to match the man slain
A true son of Grainne his name long will shine
O gallant Mick Collins cut off in his prime.

It was Michael Collins who changed the Irish revolutionary, strategy and tactics from fixed battles like Vinegar Hill in 1798 to a guerrilla war. The Irish could not be successful against the might of the U.K. in a fixed piece battle but, were able to wear down the Brits with a Guerrilla War.

This is possibly the best user-created music video I've ever seen. The use of footage from the film combined with tidbits of actual footage from 1916, and the superb song used, make one of the best videos on YT. No man could ever hope to surpass the charisma, personality, or courage of "The Big Fella".

Dev was no different than Churchill and Loyd George .. all for political gain .. . so what does he do?? get's rid of Arthur and Mick for he's own gain .. . no different than Cahill Brugha .. . these men are what you would call Idealist's .. . look just ask yourself this one question .. . do you honestly think Mick was going to just sit back and watch and do noting as the North's Catholic's were being burnt out of their home's and being shot down like dog's on the streets .. . wake up man ..

***** August 1922 Collins told Northern IRA meeting of new training and offensive planned against partition. "And if that doesn't work, the Treaty can go to hell & we'll begin again." You're speaking from hearsay & are not acquainted with the record. But it's not your fault because the history of this era was suppressed by the establishment for decades afterward.

I am a defender of the faith but from all I can read and interpret from this sad affair is that Michael Collins was killed by his own brethren. The hardcore IRA did not want anything less than a totally free Irish state and that's what led to this man's death.

steve hale No the first shots of the Civil War were fired by those 'Freestaters' and as for being 'Hardcore' everyone had blood on their hands but those 'Midnight military Courts' and the likes of, what went on in Kerry in the spring of 1923 make grim reading and create new low for humanity on that fractured Isle brother killing brother while the Imperialist looked on, little changes around the globe.....

@@malachy1847 exactly. And add to that the fact that from the early stages of the Civil War the Brits gave cannons and ammunition to the Freestaters, to be used against their former comrades. Besides that, sided with the Pro-Treaty or Freestaters were Right Wing s-c-u-m like O'Duffy (later to become overtly f.a.s.c.i.s.t) or the likes of O'Higgins and the ones responsible of executing Republican prisoners tied with land mines. ( en. wikipedia. org / wiki / Executions_during_the_Irish_Civil_War ) Collins had said (after being forced to sign the Treaty) that it was "a stepping stone" to get the North also free into the Republic, but we can never know if he really intended to fight for it or not. At least he tried it in the early stages after the Treaty was signed, with his Anti-Partition stance. ( Read 'Partition at 100: IRA's Northern Offensive of May 1922 was doomed to disastrous failure ' article in the Irish News, or 'Michael Collins' unfinished revolution ' and the more recent 'The tragedy of Michael Collins' articles in An Phoblacht / Republican News).
