I wrote to Frankie Hill via Powell Peralta back in the day asking for him to sign an ad he was in I tore out of a mag and some stickers, he wrote me back a full two pages of encouragement and positivity. Class act all the way. The letter and autograph are long gone but the memory will always remain.

When I was skating seriously back in the 90s, we used to say "go Frankie" as a synonym for "go bigger". Man... This guy, it's truly hard to understand how ENORMOUS some of his stuff were. I Would say a bunch of his stuff is really big even with today's standard. Man.. such a fearless hero. I would love to see a videopart from these days, I wouldn't even care if he couldn't do big or new stuff.... I just wanna see Frankie skate again

That gap blew me away the first time I saw it! It was a historical moment that showed what was possible and changed everything along with many other things Frankie did! What Pat Duffy, Jamie Thomas ...and others went on to do in the nineties, what people like Jaws and many do today, all stems from that very moment. 30 odd years ago! It's still as magical today and I can't help but keep watching it over and over, just like I did back then! Flying! Frankie Hill, Thank you! ✨🛹⛰️😮👏🏼👊🏼🙏🏼💓

I had the same experience with Gonz as everyone else who grew up in that era, and don’t want to minimize that impact, but I have to say Frankie was & is really my “gonz.” Whoa, you can do that on a skateboard? And while they were both natural and flowed through streets, gonz had his spontaneous freeform thing going on, but there was something about Frankie ATTACKING shit that really got me. In my head he was Cardiel before Cardiel was Cardiel, which I mean as a compliment to both of them. Stoked he’s getting a boost in recognition right now - truly think he should have had more of it back then, and continuously.

I grew up on Frankie's street in Goleta. I started skating a little after his day ('95), Powell was on the way out and Shorty's on the way in (both Goleta companies) but he was such a legend in our neighborhood. I went to that high school he's talking about (Dos Pueblos), and that gap is huge. SB/Goleta doesn't get a lot of love anymore, but for a while, there pretty much wasn't a skate video without at least one SB spot in it (a whole lot of the San Marcos High ledges and rails). Anyway, great interview, as always.

A pioneer, i saw him do his first grind on vert, it was a six foot wall and he was so stoked, he shouted it out to the crowd, at the time i was confused why he was celebrating it so loudly, seeing this interview all these years later i think i finally understand, what a beautiful expression of when humility and pride are so gracefully intertwined. So much respect for how he carried himself in this interview and for all the inspiration he generated in others, a skateboard legend undoubtedly.

I didn’t learn about Frankie Hill until the ON Videos started coming out in the early 2000’s. I remember thinking he looked totally on par compared to what was going on in modern skating at the time. We got the right format later and our eyes were so big watching Frankie Hill and we tried to be like him but 1/10th scale. Now I am 46 and have family and living in Bangkok. At 13 years old I quit skating in 1989 as a sponsored amateur, I walked away from skateboarding and didn’t look back until 2 years ago when I was around 46 years old. I love skateboarding and regret ever quitting. But as I’m getting back into the sport, I’m watching/listening to your podcasts and hearing all of the personal stories from legends which is awesome. However, there needs to be a documentary on “Evolution of Skateboarding” as an American made sport that spread world wide. That would get more people into skateboarding. The bones brigade documentary was awesome but that’s just the bones brigade, but little is focused on the culture and why like, non-skaters wear thrasher T-shirts.
